According to Mike Garafolo of USA Today The Dolphins have shown interest in free-agent DE Osi Umenyiora (Giants). Comments? http://www.kffl.com/gnews.php?id=844716-dolphins-interested-in-osi-umenyiora
Osi hasnt had much of a sniff in FA because as he always does, he is looking to get paid. He has held out a few times with the NYG and Im sure hes overvaluing his worth. If we can get him on a 2 year deal at 5 or so per Id be ok since he forces TO's with the strip sack that he does as well as anyone. Across from Wake he could easily be a 10 sack guy again. Just be prepared for someone who has no interest in playing the run and will miss time with tweaks of hamstrings and stuff of that nature. That said, he shows up when hes up against it and can still be a game changer...
For the right price. I'd love to have him. We need a situational passs rusher. Like Boik said, 2 year deal so we can draft his replacement
Last season he had 45 QB disruptions in 422 pass rush snaps. That is about 1 every 9 snaps. 6 sacks, 7 hits, 32 hurries.
And he was, when healthy, the NYG's most effective rusher last year. He did of course benefit from JPP seeing constant doubles but he was better then Tuck by a fair amount and he was more prolific then JPP in terms of his pass rushes. Thats not to say hes better then JPP, he isnt. But he would benefit from Wake's presence the way he benefited from JPP's presence. Id love to have him on this team more so then Abraham.
I imagine they're pretty likely to end up with one of the veteran edge rushers out there. The price will almost certainly be right on someone out there, and I think it's a happy medium which allows you time to see if some of the guys on the roster develop.
this makes my argument btw this blew up in there face so bad and he wasn't even sneezing at the money osi would be looking to get
I think he would be a great addition on our defense. He plays the run ok and would add that situational pass rush opposite Wake. I would be willing to give him a 2 year contract somewhere around $5-6 a year. I think Wake and Olivier would benefit having him around as well as our defense as a whole. He would add a veteran presence on defense as we don't have much after loosing Dansby and Burnett. All depends on his asking price and as stated before I think he is chasing the $$ so this most likely won't happen unless we overpay. If that's the case then I say no. Just means more reps for Vernon and that's exactly what he needs to get better and be more effective.
I'd just rather draft Jarvis Jones, Tank Carradine, or Alex Okafor. Preferably Jarvis Jones. I think he'd add a nice element to the defense at the OLB spot in a Von Miller-ish role. I know Ireland said he liked Koa Misi's development, but... "Pillar of defense" = Jake Long "I'm happy with Gibril Wilson" = cut a week later "Jonathan Martin is the top candidate at left tackle" = trade for Branden Albert?
Only thing about Jarvis Jones (and similarly Mingo IMO, though he isn't the finisher Jones is) is that they played Vernon at OLB some in the past so I wonder if they wouldn't prefer a more true DE since they have Vernon. Then again, maybe they want maximum versatility.
Vernon only played it in nickel and pass-rush packages from what I saw, not in the base defense - I did miss the 2nd Bills game. I think Jones is an instant upgrade over both Vernon and Koa Misi. I think you could still develop Vernon as a sub-package guy. You could use him like the Bengals used Wallace Gilberry last year. Often times they'd have Gilberry with his hand in the dirt opposite Dunlap and then lined up Michael Johnson as a stand-up OLB next to Gilberry. I don't see why you could do the same with Vernon, Wake, and Jones. That's what my thinking would be. I'd certainly hope that having Koa Misi and Olivier Vernon on the roster wouldn't preclude them from drafting Jones if he falls to 12, though I think it might, sadly.
I really don't think that is what would preclude them exactly, I just think that they would find another player to be more valuable to the team (if they passed).
I could certainly see them valuing Lane Johnson, Jonathan Cooper, or Tavon Austin at #12 based on roster needs as of today. Hopefully the picture comes into focus a little more by the end of April.
Personally I would like to see them sign him, it seems like Dumerville is getting too rich for Miami (shocking I know) but Osi is a guy that could bring a championship swagger and leadership that is needed to the unit. The guy has been through the wars, and was/is pretty successful, me thinks he wants more Brady *** too....He probably can be had for low money as well, and low years....
I am really curious about what is utlimately going to happen with Misi, Vernon, Shelby, Kaddu, Odrick when additional pass rushing personnel come in.
Probably nothing, they'll continue to be rotated through with different distributions. Misi might get pushed into more straight linebacker play.
Antwan Barnes was my preferred choice for a situational pass rusher on the right side, especially at the price the Jets got him for. I'd be OK with Osi, but with a nice collection of edge rushers in the draft, I'm not sure how much I'd be willing to pay for him. Assuming he'll get $4-5 million per year, I think I'd probably rather spend that on a CB and grab a pass rusher or two in the first 3 rounds.
Given Osi's past, money will be a big part of whether he comes here (at least for him). Does signing Winston put the kabosh on Osi, assuming he'll get the $4-5M he's likely to command ?? IDK... Personally I'd rather see us sign either Vollmer or Winston before we look at DE...There are some options in the draft and we have a couple of young guys that could improve on the roster already....
If we drafted Stacy in the 7th round I would consider that a steal. I have watched him at Vandy over the last three years in particular and his game should translate well to the pros. Some might say he is a little smallish, but he looked good to me.
The question is will Miami sign Osi before the draft, or gamble and go through the draft and consider him afterwards (not sure he will be there).
He seems to be rated as a 6th rounder, but it isn't uncommon for HBs to drop. So I'm just guessing that he may be there.
I just consider him a sleeper type. His assigned value is as you said, but I think he brings a lot to the table. I like him and the Johnson kid from Arkansas a lot.
Ireland's continued lack of interest in Barnes is certainly puzzling. The kid is a Miami native and I'm pretty sure would love to play there. He signs for low money comparatively. Every offseason when Barnes is a FA, even though we could use another pass rusher, Ireland ignores him.
