Yup. Ogbah and Baker will need to be immediate cuts. Maybe some low-salary guys like JWJ and Crossen too. Howard makes sense as a June 1 cut. Not before. Ogbah, 13.7M Baker, 9.8M MikeWhite, 3.5M Jeff Wilson, 2.9M Crossen, 2.99M Riley, 2.5M Sanders, 2.38M = 37.77M and we are currently at $48,521,870 over, according to OTC, so even simply cutting all those guys would have us at about 11M over. Also, correct me if I'm wrong but if Howard was post-June 1, we cannot count the savings of 18.5M till June 1, right? Considering we are currently $58,925,721 under the cap for 2025, there must be a way to move things around, add some voidable years, to make 2024 manageable.
The Saints know the tricks to getting under. Remember a couple of years ago, they were something like 90M over for the upcoming season at this point, and in early March still 70M over and we thought they'd have to cut guys like Lattimore and Ramczyk to get under and they didn't end up cutting any of their best players. Even signed some guys. The key in basic terms is adding voidable years and kicking the can down the road. No one else does it better than the Saints. Right now the Saints are $82,253,888 over for 2024. They cannot cut any of the top players but Kamara and Demario Davis before June 1 without going even further into debt. They'll work it out, and so will we.
I don't think he will retire due to a couple of things. 1. He has $5M in guaranteed salary next year but I think he has to be on the roster for it. 2. The Dolphins can request that he pays back the remaining prorated signing bonus which is $7.2M. So if he retires, he's losing out on $12M. I think he plays next year just for that reason alone. The Dolphins then have the out on the contract for 2025.
Nonsense. Just complete and utter nonsense. Your hatred for Grier is definitely clouding your judgement on this one.
Sure we cut all these players, but we have to sign someone else to replace them. I don't see our roster being better next year than it was this year.
that would be quite the magic trick going from 40 million over to 80 million under. For me the answer is not releasing half the team to get there, that is the exact example of salary cap hell .
If they pay Tua, there is a good chance, that the roster we had last year, will be the best Tua will ever have had unless we rock the draft…
and I love Sieler, BUT if people think he will put up same numbers without Wilkins beside him they are crazy.
yep, same people saying salary cap is not an issue are the same ones saying all we have to do is release half the team. Sounds like an issue to me
Yes...the letters "N" and "A" are so close together on the keyboard I can see how you made that "typo". Maybe you're not even a fan of another AFC team (I took you for maybe a Jets or Bills fan) and instead an NFC team fan? Who is it, Cowboys? lmao
Year 5 according to whom, you? As if you're the harbinger of what constitutes when a rebuild begins or ends. Hell, you're not even aware of what Conference the Dolphins are in. lol The Dolphins just got their HC and a great chunk of their core players 2 seasons ago and have made the playoffs twice. With each season being shattered by injuries. It seems you're more than happy to give the Bills excuses and passes and at least 3 years, but not the Dolphins. Yet you're a Dolphins fan. Give me a ****ing break.
Half the team? Baker, Ogbah, and X are "half the team"? I showed that releasing those three and restructuring Tyreek, Ramsey, and Chubb will put them under the cap by over $40m. They'd like to have more money, so a few other players that rarely saw the field will most likely not be back. Obviously Grier needs to have a good draft where we see some actual rookies getting playing time, and hopefully Cam Smith and Bonner can get on the field this season, along with a few others, but the Dolphins will be fine money and player wise. Unless someone from their main core decides to pull a Ricky Williams and retires or JP or Chubb have some setbacks with their injuries. Facts are, the main core group of players will be back next season. I'm hoping that Wilkins helps out and signs a team friendly contract or he may be the one core player that's not and if Grier and company don't move hell and highwater to keep him I'll be pissed, but I think they will and CW will be a Dolphin next season.
Nonsense that is not backed up by any reasonable facts or thinking. Mostert may retire, but there's Achane and JWJ...not to mention Brooks who looked good before his injury, but who else from the offense may not be here? Cotton? lmao...Good. I mean, the oline, even when healthy, wasn't very good. Their TE's can either stay or will be upgraded. So, who? On defense Ogbah, X, and Baker or most likely gone. AVG (I hope he's still here) may be gone. But who else from their defensive core will be gone? Ogbah is just an albatross, X is washed, Baker can easily be upgraded if they decide to move on from him. Giving Tua an extension will only help the cap. And extending one of the best QB's in the league may not be something you what to do, but 99% of rational people think it's the right move. The question will be for how much. I doubt many think he's worth top 5 money ($50m/year), but $40m/yr for a QB that as led, or been near the top, the league in nearly every meaningful QB stat is worth that.
You mean the playoff team that had the #8 offense and fielded a better defense than the Dolphins this season? This is a bad example. Are there ever "cap casualties"? Of course. But acting as if the Dolphins current cap situation is something 90% of all teams (Teams with owners willing to write these checks) don't go through is absurd. Facts are, the Dolphins have (or will have) enough money to keep all the players that they want to keep.
Huh? They had the 9th ranked offense and 8th ranked defense. They are far from horrible. They had a down year, but they aren't in trouble player or cap wise.
Love your argumentation, with the nonsense and how everything is so easy and implying I may not want to extend Tua (I‘m actually not sure) but 99% of the rational people (who decides who they are, you?!) want to. Must be nice on that pedestal you‘re on. The thing is, if you’re paying top dollar for Tua then there is a high chance this was the most talented team unless you‘re drafting well, cause if you’re paying Tua 50 millions then there is only so much you can do. That’s why most franchises like to have a QB on a rookie contract, because after that it only gets harder.
I think the defense is going to take a step back. Not having Wilkins is big, or needing to pay him is going to take up cap space. Chubb and JP probably don't start the year, and it usually takes a year for players to get back to themselves post achilles. You'll need legit depth/starters there. You say things like Baker can be easily upgraded, but if it was easy, then they should have done it the past few years. CB is a real problem position. X may be "washed" but he looks good compared to the other players on the roster (ie Apple, Kahou, ect...). So again, we'll need multiple corners. Don't know how you expect so many things to be magically fixed with Grier at the helm and being so friggin bad at drafting needing to drop/restructure so many just to get back to even. There's no deal for Tua that makes any sense. Just let him play on his 5th year option, because the small savings by extending him and making a mistake just isn't worth it. Juice isn't worth the squeeze.
I think that's being heavily implied. Grier said in press conference something along the lines of "He's earned his chance at FA." He said similar on Gesicki. I think it's a tough squeeze onto the roster, and Wilkins is taking no discounts (he's allegedly pretty cheap according to the beat writers).
It seems you don't understand this process. Unless you release Tua, extending him will HELP the cap. Ergo; allow more money to be spent on other players. Why? Because not extending, but keeping him, will create a $25m cap hit next year. If they extend him, that cap hit, if structured correctly, would be less. Understand? So are you implying that you want him released? You're claiming you're not sure if he should be extended or not, and claiming that extending him will hamper the team's ability to keep good players, right? Again, that's nonsense and not backed up by any reasonable thought or facts. I mean, you argued that extending Tua will make it so other players won't be able to stay because of cap ramifications. That's just not true. There are two options: Extend him Let him play out his 5th season In the former scenario, the Dolphins would save cap space for next season (and potentially up to two more after that based upon the contract) which would allow the current core of players to stay together. For example, look at Allen and the Bills. They extended him for a 6yr $260,000,000 contract. However, his cap hit in the first 3 years were $10m, $16m, and $18m. All less than what Tua would make next season if he's not extended. In the latter scenario, the cap for next year is worse off and potentially creates a scenario where the Dolphins will need to let some core players go. So do we think Tua isn't capable? Should they release him and go back to trying to find a new QB? They spent 20+ years trying to find someone of Tua's caliber. And if they release him these other core players will most likely be long gone before they find another QB. I realize that some don't think Tua's "the guy", but his play begs to differ. Look at Mahomes, maybe the greatest QB of all time, and his play this season. He's dropped way off without playmakers. The Dolphins were decimated by injuries. That's not an excuse, that's just the facts. Sure, Tua could have played better at times, but he's played really well. Hell, I showed what his stats are compared to Allen's against like teams and Tua was better. Objectively better. Allen, the last 5 weeks of the season had a cumulative passer rating of 89 with 5 TD's and 5 INT's. Yet the Bills went 5-0 in those games. Why? Well, for one thing they were one of the healthiest teams in the league. For another, they got a better play caller that basically took the ball out of Josh's hands and let the TEAM win the games. When Josh was carrying the team they were 6-6.
So in order to keep Wilkins you think INCREASING Tua's cap hit next season is the right move? Doesn't make sense. I think lowering Tua's cap hit, cutting Ogbah, Baker, and X, along with doing a few of the other small things I mentioned, would help keep Wilkins. When Duke filled in for Baker there wasn't much of a drop off, if any, at that position. There are many guys out there who can fill Baker's shoes and do it cheaper. MAybe Tindall can make a leap? X looked not much better than Apple. Kader definitely took a step back this year, but is that due to the new defense and him playing in his 2ns scheme in his first two years? He showed last year, his rookie year, that he has the skills. I have hope for him with one more season under Fangio. Needham hasn't looked right after he came back from injury, but before that he was good. We still have Cam Smith and Bonner. They are big question marks. Bottom line, this team is built to win now. Injuries really skewed a lot of what I think this team can be and is. Keeping the main core of players together should be the priority. And, like it or not, Tua is part of that core.
You really enjoy talking down to people, don’t you LOL? Wrote the same thing with the 2 options not long ago around here somewhere. You don’t need to explain the cap to me and how we safe money with Tua. So, what is wrong, with what I actually wrote in the two posts that you quoted? Really liked that episode:
I'm not increasing Tua's cap hit. I'm keeping it as is. For someone that doesn't think the cap matters, you for some reason think it matters a LOT when it comes to a minor reduction in cap for extending Tua. The much more important thing is not locking yourself into mediocrity for longer than you have to at the most important position on the field. Let Tua play on his 5th year option. I disagree a lot of what you said there. Duke was a lot worst than Baker in coverage. Tindall hasn't seen the field, like AT ALL. X did look much better than Apple or Kahou. Cam Smith again could be a draft bust like Tindall as he hasn't seen the field. You potentially need 3-4 CBs. There's a ton missing on this team on defense.
In the first post of yours that I quoted, you claimed that extending Tua would mean last year would be the best team Tua's ever had or will have. That's just not true. Extending Tua would lessen the cap hit and allow for more money to keep and get better players. In your second post you basically reiterated what you wrote in the first except you whined a little more.
Aha, you don’t seem to be able to read very good. I wrote there is a good chance not that it will be for sure. Not the first time you’ve picked a fight for the wrong reasons with me…
"...don't seem to be able to read very good"...lmao I honestly don't recall ever conversing with you before this thread.
AVG is another guy who is in line for a BIG payday. I think it's a pretty easy to say he was the best defensive player on the team this season.
No surprise there. LOL Keep it up with the misreading stuff and putting words in peoples mouths, talking down on people and don’t forget the „troll-hunting“.
I think a good comp for AVG's contract would be to that of Aidan Hutchinson's. 4yrs/$35m...Structured correctly that would put his cap hit at around $6-$7m next season.
What have we discussed in the past? There doesn't need to be any "hunting" when the trolls are out in the open.
Trolls = people who have takes and opinions on the Dolphins, that don’t have your approval and don’t bother.
They were 5-12 the year before after they had to deal with their salary cap issues. You don't quite seem to understand that most teams are not 40 million over the cap.
He was the #2 overall pick. His stats compared to AVG were about the same this season. And AVG will be what, 29-30 next season? Not many teams, if any at all, are going to pay him more than the 2nd overall, 22 yr old Aiden.
