From a guy who I met through business, who does business with these pro athletes, take it for what it's worth:

Dolphins were pursuing Shawne Merriman last year, are pursuing him this year, and maybe even more next year when I believe that he will be a FA.

Dolphins are pursuing San Diego WR Vincent Jackson.

    For Heat fans:

Shaq desperately wants to play for the Heat, will play for next to nothing so he can get more rings than Kobe.

Ray Allen was in the mix for the Heat, something about loyalty to Doc Rivers and his taking a year off from coaching.

Dirk Nowitski was very much in the mix for the Heat.

I get the feeling his information is dated.

That crossed my mind, but even though Misi looks good off of the bat, Wake may never be more than a great situational pass rusher. I like Hartline as a #2 but don't love him... Jackson at the right price- bring it on.

I think that I saw that Shaq is meeting with LBJ today.

Dirk has re-signed with Dallas... very not in the mix for the Heat.

Shaq has signed with Boston, and so has Ray Allen.

Fins traded for Brandon Marshall, and are no longer in the market for Vincent Jackson.

The only thing that has any possibility, and a slim one at that... is Merriman.

CK is right... this stuff is VERY old.

Yeah we have no reason to go after Vincent Jackson when we already have Brandon Marshall and a handful of other solid receivers. That would be way too much money tied up in one position.

Very dated information. CK was simply being kind. About the only non-dated piece of information is the bit about Merriman.

The Heat ignored Shaq, and he's already signed with the Celtics; Vincent Jackson is not available for trade at the moment, nor would the Dolphins bother to trade for a second mega-contract at WR; the Ray Allen stuff is extremely old, and it was also false; and we already knew about Dirk Nowitski.

Re: the NBA stuff, the point was that Ray Allen was close to signing with the Heat at one point, which I was unaware of. Nowitstki was in the mix, which I was unaware of, and of course he re-upped with Dallas. Shaq was apparently desperately trying to get the Heat interested at a bargain basement price but the interest wasn't there- I guess that he signed with the Celtics a few hours ago.

Merriman would make sense to me as would Jackson if he could be had at the right price in terms of compensation to the Chargers and salary cap. Again, I like Hartline but don't love him. If Marshall were to get hurt we'd go right back to having one of the worst WR corps in the NFL. Dorin Dickerson is apparently lighhting it up in Houston, he would have been an interesting late round pick for us and a good backup for Marshall.

I can't see us having two of the five highest paid WRs in the NFL. That would be a bit much IMO.

Jackson isnt available for the right price though. Not even close. SD has been asking for a 1st and a 3rd... more than we gave up for Marshall. Plus, Jackson is going to want a contract similar to Marshall.

We would have the best WR corps in the league if we got VJ, but it just isnt possible...

Like I said, Merriman makes more sense than anything else... but even then it is still unlikely b/c we are already missing a 2nd in next years draft, and Parcells' head would explode if we were down another pick, lol.

Plus, Merriman wants big money and had injury and production issues the past couple of years...

You need to visit the Other Sports forum and HeatFreak.com more often. We were all over everything you've mentioned days and weeks ago.

That depends on if you think you're getting the pre-steroids Merriman or the post-steroids Merriman. Post-steroids Merriman hasn't been pretty, and hasn't had a great attitude, either.

You can say that about plenty of teams, though. Would Carolina's passing game scare anyone without Steve Smith? Likewise, how about Atlanta's receivers without Roddy White? The Giants still aren't quite the same without Plaxico Burress. The Cardinals definitely wouldn't frighten anyone now without Larry Fitzgerald.

Vincent Jackson wants to be paid right now. You don't trade for a second massive WR contract with the first already on your team just because you're afraid of injury.

Another thing about Jackson is that he's going to be suspended to start the season. The fact that they still want a 1/3 is crazy.

What's funny is that King(?, I forget who exactly) originally tweeted Merriman rather than Dobbins when he broke the draft day trade with SD. I think there's a bit of smoke there. But I think it was pre-Koa Misi. The team is very happy with him right now. And I have to believe Merriman (or any other high dollar OLB) would be on the waaaay back burner at this point. You have Misi flashing a bit, and you have Cameron Wake flashing on the other side. No reason to pursue a starter at this point. Especially one with a lot to prove himself (i.e. his severe dropoff in production).

As for Shaq, he burned his bridges down here. I think most Heat fans would be upset if he'd returned to boot.
Hop on over to www.heatfreak.com if you want to talk Heat. ;)

I'd take Jackson for a 1st and a 4th, especially since SD basically threw us a bone by giving us a high 2nd and Dobbins for Ryan Matthews (and we still got who we wanted). It's very possible that one of the many top WR's is BPA when we draft in 2011, so instead of grabbing a big target like Julio Jones, AJ Green, Jonathan Baldwin, or Michael Floyd who might need a year or 2 to blossom, why not use an extra pick to get a big, proven WR who's ready to play NOW.

If we want to REALLY become dominant and smash-mouth on offense, then IMO we should be maulers across the ENTIRE front. We're at the point where we're getting pretty deep and will be turning away/cutting some decent young players, so I dont think it would really hurt us to sacrifice a pick at this juncture.

B/c it's an uncapped year, couldn't we fork out his guaranteed money etc this year so his contract is thinner for the remaining?

I would love to have Jackson and Marshall on the same field but its not going to happen and i really doubt that dolphins are going after Merriman

By next season, I doubt Merriman could hold Misi's jock strap (not b/c he's off the juice and it'd be too heavy for him).... and he was less effective than Wake was last year.

I dont think he sniffs Sun Life Stadium unless he pays for a ticket.

No. There are rules in place to prevent this. The NFL needs to preserve its facade of parity.

So couldn't we pay him a 1 year deal for like 20 mil...... and then give him a less significant extension afterwards (wink wink). :shifty: Just brainfarting aloud here.

There's gotta be some sort of loop hole that can be abused this season. LOL

The issue isn't the salary cap as much as it is sending the message to everybody on the roster that money isn't a concern. It will be hard to convince guys like Ronnie Brown to take a pay cut when he sees us throwing money at everyone thats available.

whilst i would agree that Merriman would be on our radar (i stated all last season that he would be our primary target this off season) ... especially given our current personnel at OLB AND the fact that no matter what the SD FO says - he has fallen out of favor there .... i don't see us making a move for him this year -- unless pre-season performance is woeful AND Merriman looks fully recovered from his knee woes. I do see us taking a long look at our situation next year AND Merriman's performance this and go from there ....

Jackson to me is a non starter at this point ....

I'm not saying to overpay the guy...... but rather to find a way to absorb as much of his salary into this season as possible so he doesnt really hurt us in the future. We would have a virtually unstoppable offense with him added to the mix and moving Hart to the slot. You can't double both of them. The only message this would send IMO is that we want to WIN. LOL. (and I think Ronnie would relish in the idea of running the ball with those 2 on the outside as well as having a major shot at a SB.... nor do I think Henne would be all that upset about it either..... or Marshall for that matter..... and the points we'd be scoring would allow our attacking D to be even more havoc causing)

Those rumors are old. I remember hearing some of those V. Jackson rumors for a little while before we signed Marshall. Same with Merriman. I think I heard some of the rumors regarding him just after the season was over, when it was clear we needed an upgrade at that position. I really don't see it happening now or in the future. JMHO.

The reason that I even bothered posting what I heard is because the rumors were supposedly NOT old. And to clarify I'm referring here to the Merriman/Jacckson rumors, the NBA stuff was just something that I found interesting re: players and Heat interest. I don't follow the Heat closely. Ray Allen and Nowitski were done, but the rumor was that Shaq was working feverishly behind the scenes to generate Heat interest. None of this Heat/NBA stuff is terribly important to me.

Anyway- yes, interest in Shawn Merriman and Vincent Jackson did make sense before the Marshall/Misi acquisitions and less so afterward. It wouldn't have occured to me that we'd be interested in Jackson after picking up Brandon Marshall. But again, I look at Hartline/Bess as #3 type guys as WR's. I'll probably talk to the same guy today, I'll try to find out more. This is nothing to get anyone's panties in a twist over, just a rumor. And to clarify, the basic tone of the comments was "Dolphins trying to get Merriman- and Jackson, too". Merriman was the focus. And my preference would be that Misi steps right in, plays great at SOLB, and we don't need Merriman anyway. But as things stand now- on this roster at OLB we have no one who is even considered a good NFL starting caliber OLB. We have a rookie (Misi) showing promise, Cameron Wake, who is a demon pass rusher but hasn't put it all together and is far from a proven commodity, and Anderson/Moses, who I both kind of like but they could and probably should be described as journeyman types of players. Misi and Wake both stepping up big time would be great, I just don't know if we can count on it.

Just spoke with the same guy- Merriman won't happen until next year if at all. Still interest in Vincent Jackson and Terrell Owens would have been considered more except for history with Parcells. No shocker there. Like I said earlier, just a rumor, not a big deal.
