I may be crazy, but I assume Coach Philbin is interested in developing players and a team that will be competitive for years to come (hmm...think I saw he said that when he was hired) than trying for a quick fix that has a life-span of about 2 years, if that long.
If they're all in on Manning, they damn sure better be all in on RGIII or Tannehill as well. Hopefully, you don't get a lot of top ten picks like the Lions. If you have one you had better use it. The good news is that I find it hard to believe Philbin and Sherman would have signed on here knowing their only option was to take a flier on an aged QB.
Well, he's coming from Green Bay. In Green Bay, that's what they do. Draft and develop guys; because realistically, what big name free agent wants to move to Green Bay. I mean, they've been to as many postseason appearances the last two years as Miami has been in the last decade. Why not try and implement a similar strategy?
Oh yeah, because the similarities between the two injuries are almost identical. I mean, Adrian Peterson is a 26 year old who tore a ligament in his knee. Peyton Manning is a 36 year old with nerve damage. Almost identical!! Especially considering that older people heal faster and better. Oh, wait. They don't.
Absolutely. I think that is why you saw Coach Philbin refer to Peyton's leadership and career in the past tense. I've felt for a while now that Ross is pushing for Manning, Philbin would prefer Flynn or Tannehill, and Ireland is caught in between.
Yep. At one point last season, 47 of the 53 players on Green Bay's roster had only played for the Packers.
I don't think there's a league-wide conspiracy hiding how bad it is. If he's throwing the ball better and his arm is getting stronger, then I'm going to assume they aren't lying when they're saying it's regenerating. But that's what the medical meetings are for.
Sorry if you are all in on Manning, then you are using your high draft pick on another need, not in case Manning doesn't work out. I just get why people want our first round pick to be a QB if we sign Manning. Doesn't make sense to me. I would use it on a pass rusher, or maybe Blackmon. Not Tannehill.
The only people saying that he is improving are from the Manning camp. It's either people close to him or friends of the Mannings. I've yet to hear an unbiased opinion on where he's at.
I'm usually not a fan of Jason LaCanfora, but I think he hit the nail on the head in this video. http://blogs.nfl.com/2012/03/08/la-...n-manning-workout/?module=HP11_headline_stack IMO, it's exactly why Peyton wants to make a decision within the next week.
So, what is your long term plan for the position? Just exactly how long do you think Peyton is going to play?
Bc people are still enamored with the franchise QB thoughts. I agree though. No Manning doesn't equal 1st round QB for me either.
Sounds like he is professional, and not going to elaborate on anything. I don't think if he was all in, that he would express it. He is just being tight lipped. He isn't rex ryan.
It wouldn't surprise me. Most teams that are interested in him are going to want to see him workout. I feel Miami is the only team that will sign him based on the hope that he will be 100% by the time the season starts. So much for due diligence. Hmmm. I wonder why Peyton will not work out for anyone yet? Could it be that he and his camp are putting out word that he is progressing well but are really hiding something?
Really, all the talk of what percent Manning is now, or will be by the regular season is just spit balling. 80%, 82%, 87%, 93%, ??? No one really knows, or knows what that percent totally means. Is it all arm strength we are referring to? Can anyone really measure his arm strength now if in a game situation? All there is is one youtube video and we don't even know what his intent was, effort wise, in any of the throws.
By the time Philbin was hired everyone had already assumed Luck to the Colts with the 1st pick and Manning was due $28M. You don't think Philbin had that discussion with Ross and Ireland before he was hired? I can see no way he walks away from the Packers without some strong assurances.
Well, Darlington just had another video up today (here: http://www.nfl.com/videos/miami-dolphins/09000d5d827795cb/Dolphins-all-in-on-Peyton) which makes me feel slightly more at ease...if he and his sources are correct. Made it seem like Ireland has just entered the research phase of Manning, starts at the :30 second mark. Hopefully there's more truth to Mortensen's rumor on ESPN radio in Arizona, again, I'm suspicious as it's Mort. But, to paraphrase, he said Manning won't go to highest financial bidder and will consider all football aspects. Denver is a more serious contender than everyone might think. Said Houston would be his top choice if they were interested. Just passing that along. *Edit* - link to the Mortensen tidbit: http://www.thephins.com/forums/show...t-go-to-the-highest-bidder-quot-85-90-Healthy
If I'm reading this right, I agree. That's why I'd advocate Miami thoroughly research Manning, to the point of passing on him for someone else, if he's not 100% healthy or projected to be well before the season starts. Personally, I'd rather Miami finally try to address the position long-term.
there are no guarantees in life, the only certainty afforded the living is death having said that I'd take my chances with Peyton Manning, give him whatever he wants 1) Wayne 2) Saturday 3) fire Philbin & let him pick a coach he likes if they don't get along 4) pay him what he wants, whatever just come to Miami & win the SuperBowl that's all I ask!
Hey guy's, First time poster this forum is great. I feel you have to go "all in" on Manning. Pending his physical and the team works him out, if his physical is good you don't pass on him. Forget age, he is an elite QB. I see how some of you want RG3 and feel we will go to multiple SB's with him. You guys must be kidding me with the premise of expecting multiple SB appearances. Let me remind you we had the greatest QB ever and he only went to 1 SB. So are you telling me that RG3 is better than DAN. You must be kidding me, he only smashed every nfl passing record when he was playing. The average NFL player only plays for a few years, if Manning is healthy when he is looked at you cant pass on the chance to get him. Things change so quick in this game, its a small window. I have been waiting so long like all of you for Miami to get to the promised land again. The time is now and you have to go for it if the opportunity is there. Again this forum is great, their is so much passion here it is awesome. Thanks
Because I ask if you have a link to support your claim made in BOLD that "...those close to Manning, he WILL NOT go to an NFC East team..." and your response is you heard a couple of guys in the media say it means I am a negative SOB? Sure this isn't just a defense mechanism kicking in that not being able to support your claim leads to resorting to a personal attack?
Yeah. That's a recipe for long term success. Let's bring in an aging, injured quarterback and let him bring on board his aging, at the end of their career veteran friends, fire the coach who we hired to bring the Packers way to Miami, and not only that, but lets pay Manning like he is 27 years old again.
So, tell me. What exactly makes him different than everyone else that has this problem and gets as many surgeries for the same problem as he has had?
Don Shula would be All In... http://miami.cbslocal.com/2012/03/08/shula-id-want-manning-no-matter-what/#.T1l8CGNhXwo.facebook “If Don Shula were put in this position,” he said in an exclusive interview with CBS4 Sports. “I would be very interested in Peyton Manning, and I would do everything in my power to make sure that he ends up with that helmet with the Dolphin logo.” “I would want Peyton Manning, no matter what.” For Shula, it’s all about winning, but he sees Manning as more than someone who can points on the board. He believes Manning would bring the Dolphins two things that have lacked in recent years; leadership and respect. “I think that’s so important. When you get a guy like Peyton Manning, I mean you’re talking about someone that’s very, very special. He’s been there, and done that, and he’s going to have the respect of everybody the minute he walks through the door, and hopefully he will walk in that door, and then immediately he’s going to have this leadership and respect of everybody else; you know, he’s been a winner and he’s going to make everybody else around him a winner.”
Just like he was all in in 1995 with the 25 some odd former first round draft choices he signed and completely wrecked the Dolphins salary cap structure for the long term by doing so.
As long as we draft a young Qb early in the draft signing Manning isn't a bad move, we still have Moore and if we don't ignore the position in the draft we can solidify our Qb position for a decade or more. Now if we ignore the position in the draft I think the front office is crazy. This is more than likely the owner wanting a splash and the front office/coaching staff hoping Manning is ready to go this year so hopefully we protect ourselves by drafting a young Qb this year regardless of whether or not we sign Manning.
And the chances of Miami actually getting a quarterback high in the draft after signing Manning are slim to none. It wouldn't surprise me if one of the concessions Miami has to make to get Manning is that they do not use any premium picks on a young passer.
Unless you are an expert in that field (You are not) and have a viable study that shows the short term effect of the injury, post surgery as it pertains to highly skilled quarterbacks, then all of this is moot. He is a 36 year old QB that was playing at a high level pre-injury. If he returns to anywhere near his previous level of play, the team he plays for is an instant championship contender.
Thanks 23rd , this site is great. It seems we r on the same page. Long term success teams are few and far between. If you get the young QB and develop long term, then a large number of the current squad will be gone before he is ready. But I see everyone is so high on RG3. We will see if his first full season is equal to Dans...lol
I've already posted the study. You, like most of the others that want to sign Peyton Manning because of his name, simply choose to ignore it.
To put it mildly... Your study was crap. I explained to you why it is crap. I also appreciate that you assign the "reason" why I want them to sign Peyton Manning. Yep. It is his name. I also want them to sign Deacon Jones to play LDE.
