NFL Network had Darlington on tonight and that was the headline. Said Ross is the only one who will probably sign Manning as is, sight unseen. They are pushing very hard right now.
Scroll on the screen said that there is no contact with Flynn. Manning or bust right now. All the chips are on the table. Marino is also helping in the cause.
I guess I'm probably in the minority, but I think this potential move has disaster written all over it. I, for one, am hoping Arizona goes all in as well, and comes out with the better hand.
As I said before, Manning and Marino are BFFS. Manning goes to Marino for advice and Dan will tell him to come here. Reggie Wayne is doing the same.
Anything we do has potential disaster, and usually is. Band wagon or not I think this football team could use a signing like this in general.
I agree, this team could certainly use an infusion of energy in the fan base, and a big free agent signing would do that. I agree with you there. However, I think the money that Peyton Manning would command would be better served re-signing Paul Soliai, or going after a free agent like Jason Jones or Mario Williams; someone that's going to be around for a long time. Manning doesn't give you that, healthy or not. I'd argue Manning has as many questions about his health as a rookie QB like Ryan Tannehill has about his ability to transition to the NFL. The difference being, Tannehill's a young guy, who was pretty good in just 1.5 seasons as a college QB. I certainly think Miami could grow with him. With Peyton Manning, if he flops...you're back to square one - without improving the defense as much as you could've by not signing him - and you STILL don't have that QB. I'd rather take the risk of improving the defense and having a rookie QB. That's just me.
You're entitled to your opinion. But this year proved two things. 1, you need a qb to go far in this league. 2, how valuable manning really is. The colts were in the Super Bowl 2 yrs ago. Won their division a year ago. Without manning, they became the worst team since the winless lions.

Regarding #2, I think you mean how valuable a healthy Manning really is. He may not be 100% ever again, and Peyton Manning at 80%, is NOT Peyton Manning. Just too many bust factors involved in this for my taste.
They could win the Superbowl with him next season and win 1 game the next 2 seasons after that and it would be a chance worth taking.
It most certainly would. Obviously you're entitled to think otherwise. I just sense disaster with this. I mean, if Miami's going to go after a free agent who is coming off injury, why not Mario Williams? He and Cameron Wake on opposite sides of the defensive line would make quite an impact. However, in Barry Jackson's latest column, his sources said Miami believes Williams is "too expensive". But Manning isn't? Not sound logic, not at all.
Good, for a very simple reason: Jeff Ireland has gotten to much of a pass on the bad stuff that has went down in the player personnel decision making process, I would much much rather get him out in the open and we succeed or fail than the sort of warm milk franchise we've been. What Ireland has never learned is sometimes you cannot shop at the discount place to get top quality, you have to risk, and you have to pay for it. And HMMM...seem to recall mentioning going for Manning was an "all in" move weeks ago...about time they caught up. Arizona has around 10.5 mil in salary cap room. However they tagged one of there guys and after he signs they will be left negative until they do some restructuring. No way they have the funds to stay in this race. If they cut Kolb they will take around an 8 million dollar hit to there cap. Too much against them I believe.
NFC team. From all sounds of those close to Manning, he WILL NOT go to an NFC East team and he really doesn't want to go to an NFC team. Word is that he would rather face Eli during a regular season matchup or the Super Bowl. He doesn't want to face him in the playoffs of be the reason Eli and the Giants couldn't make it to the Super Bowl. Good news for us, if true.

Well, coming from the Ted Thompson school of assembling a consistent winning team, yeah, I can see why he says that. Unfortunately, Stephen Ross and Jeff Ireland aren't from that same school. Heck, Ross has only known losing seasons in Miami since taking 100% ownership. I'd hope that Philbin can convince Ireland and Ross that there are smarter (long-term hint, hint) options out there than a not-100% Peyton Manning.

Which is why I wrote that I hope he can convince them otherwise. I hold out little hope of that happening, but again, this whole thing just stinks of moves Miami has made in the past. I mean, take off the name Peyton Manning, and ask yourself if you'd sign a free agent quarterback who hasn't thrown a pass in the NFL in 2 years, whose nerve may never regenerate to come quarterback your team. Just doesn't add up.

I'm all for Manning if he checks out healthy. His nerve is regenerating and the risk/reward is solid. I think Philbin already knows what their plan is and just isn't going to say anything til it's official one way or the other. That's the smart move for Philbin whether or not he supports adding Peyton.
This is what happens when an owner gets too involved and demands that the team go after a certain player. I firmly believe that the Dolphins interest in Peyton Manning is all Ross. It's not a good investment at all, because at best, you get a limited Peyton Manning for the next 2-3 years. You force yourself to ignore the long term future of the position as well, as there is no way this team is taking a quarterback high after signing Manning. They will be all in to win now, and that pick will go towards a player who can help immediately.
I agree with what you said about Philbin. As for the bold part - does anyone really know that for sure? I'd hope Miami asked everything they possibly could if there was a "medical meeting" (Club Level Thread) today. I just don't trust what anyone says about that right now.
Haha...thats easy to say, buy them ask yourself do you pass up on a running back who missed half of last year after blowing out his knee and won't play till midseason this year? Then say you wouldn't take Adrian Peterson on your team. Changes everything. Manning is worth the risk....people are all gaa gaa over Flynn and Tannehill, but really they are just another of one of the many average QBs to suit up for the fins and be mediocre.
Well, the good news is that Peyton isn't at the age when QBs naturally start to decline do to age alone...uh, never mind. I am pretty sure everyone else is under the impression if Manning is signed we have our "franchise" QB and not an aging player on the decline.
I think most have seen plenty examples of players, running backs in particular, coming back from knee injuries to play quite well. Edgerrin James, Willis McGahee, Ronnie Brown, etc. How many quarterbacks have come back from nerve injuries in their neck? It's apples to oranges. Peyton Manning at his current health status would probably be added to the mediocre pile. Why not make an actual long-term investment in the position with a guy like Tannehill? I think Ross is kidding himself if he thinks Miami is a QB away from the Super Bowl. There's going to be quite a few holes to fill, especially if Miami spends money on Peyton instead of re-signing its own parts like Soliai or Langford.
