Nice Job Ray Rice. Good thing you didn't take a supplement to beef up... to you know...perform?

Beat your girlfriend. That's the way to go.

Sad isn't it. I was thinking the same thing. The league's priorities are screwed.

The example I saw on twitter that also seems ludicrous is Terrelle Pryor starting his NFL career with a 5 game suspension for his selling autographs in college in violation of NCAA rules.

    What a ****ing racket.

When you think about that - relative to the Ray Rice 2 gamer ... it is just incredibly outrageous!

This is absolutely ridiculous. The NFL should truly be ashamed today. Only in the NFL is smoking weed worse than knocking a woman out.

I'm going to play devil's advocate for a moment.

He married this girl. Unless there's a prenuptial agreement in place then what is his now is also hers. That includes his NFL paycheck. That paycheck will be dinged $500,000 (approximate) due to his suspension.

Could the NFL be thinking essentially that whatever punishment they mete out to Ray Rice invariably is also punishment meted out to the woman he hit, and maybe that's why they went a little easy on him?

  16. MrClean

If that was a concern, why not just suspend him X number of games more, but with pay? He should have been suspended for the season as far as I'm concerned. What he did was beyond the pale of acceptable human conduct. Reading John Harbaugh's comments, I lost respect for him today. Some of the speculation on ESPN was that the league's decision was based on the court's decisions on the matter. Not that they agreed. Schlereth certainly thought the league was too light on Rice.

Ray Rice did something illegal. Thats the courts job to punish.

Dion Jordan DIRECTLY cheated to get an edge in the NFL. The nfl suspended him for it.

    Why compare the two?

    That's fair.

I think the better comparison is Terrelle Pryor walking into the NFL suspended 5 games for NCAA violations he committed in college, and also guys getting suspended for possession of marijuana.

First of all, I agree that this is a joke and Rice deserves a much longer suspension. It's backwards logic.

Secondly, I first read this thread as "Dion Jordan beat his girlfriend" and pooped my pants.

I really do think it's an interesting moral dilemma as far as trying to punish Ray Rice goes in that financially punishing him essentially punishes her as well since she's married to him.

And I do NOT accept the whole "she deserves it for marrying him" angle.

It really makes you wonder if it's even the NFL's role to supplement the criminal justice system's handling of domestic violence issues between spouses.

If they weren't married, heck I say throw the book at him.

I don't think he is being punished on his wife's behalf. I think the punishment is for hurting the NFL brand.

Marijuana is illegal in 48 states. If it's fair to say that the Ray Rice situation is for courts to punish, it's also fair to say that of marijuana use.

The Terrelle Pryor example is really the best one.

Why, because Rice is a public figure and his actions can be deemed "conduct unbecoming of the NFL".

Do you know how difficult it can be for someone with an arrest record to find a job, especially a well paying one? I can guarantee you if a CEO of a major corporation with a similar seven figure income was caught doing what Rice did, he wouldn't receive a mere two week slap on the wrist; he'd most likely be out of a job and probably never working in upper management again.

Couldn't that logic be applied to any domestic violence case were the defendant is the sole provider in the family?

Apparently it was supposed to be 4 game suspension but Rice had a sit down with Goodell last week. It was effectively an appeal so the final suspension delivered can't be appealed.

Not surprising as Roethlisberger had an 8 game suspension reduced to 6 due to "good behavior".

It's not fair. Conduct detrimental to the shield has been trotted out to suspend people for what they probably did that were crimes (Roethlisberger being one).
