Well, when I saw the photo the first thing I thought was, that looks like a stegasaurus. The only thing is that stegasauruses also supposedly had spiked tails, maybe the skeletal record is off, we can't say for sure, or maybe this is a related species. The other thing to consider is that according to accepted belief, dinosaurs died out 65 million years before mankind first appeared so it's unlikely that humans, even proto-humans had any contact with this creature. Just a hypothesis, but when the earth plunged into cold darkness maybe there were warm spots, like air bubbles under the ice sheets.
Mammals often adapted features that were used by the dinosaurs because that what the environment lead the animals to develop .Those could be cooling fins for a now extinct animal. There are parallels from one animal group to another which really depend more on the food chain that on what family of animals they came from. There were marsupial bears and lions and tigers for instance now all extinct but they had similar characteristics to the mammal counterparts. It looks like a rhino to me .They have armor and perhaps there were some species who had cooling fins too.
One of the commenters posted this link, http://fishheadsalad.com/tossing/steg/steg.htm, and it gives a pretty good argument.
ok is it just me or does the "temple" carving thats supposed to have been built in 1856 or whatever look extremely fresh and unweathered/undamaged after all these years? a little hog washish if you ask me. also the site seems to be one for movies. still slightly interesting.
