We could do a whole lot worse... And I can see the similarities at this point... It does remain to be seen if Philbin will grow into the job as well as Noll did, but I would not mind it one little bit if he did.. A calm assured presence on the sideline beats field goal fist pumping any day of the week.
Win 4 Super Bowls like Noll and then we can compare him to Noll. Ill be happy to say hes better because he won them for us
Hopefully he'll get that chance. Some coaches get lucky with some early success and are given time. Others are fortunate through circumstances like cheap owners. I believe that if you identify the characteristics you want in the coach and let them grow into the position that you are more likely to end up with a good coach. IMO Sparano would have been every bit as good as Fisher after having learned on the job for four years. Fisher actually struggled early on similar to Sparano, but cheap ownership didn't want to replace him so he stayed on. Knoll had (IIRC) just one winning season in his four years as well. We all get better at our jobs over time as long as we're trying to. If you find the guy that will keep working patience pays off far better than blowing everything up every few years.
