We talk a lot about guys like Randy Starks and Polite being unheralded guys who absolutely deserve to be in the Pro Bowl. But what about Dan Carpenter? Carpenter is a sizzling 19/20 this year. His only miss was a 49-yarder against the Colts in Week 2. He's hit 17 straight thereafter. His kickoffs might not be the farthest, but this guy has ice water in his veins. The picture of consistency.
Its great to know we have both punter and kicker positions locked down with youth and something we don't have to worry about among the teams needs.
He did surprisingly well on kickoffs today too. A number of them were 2-4 yards deep in the endzone. Great stuff from Carpenter this season.
It takes so much more than FG percentage How many touch backs? Carpenter has 4...top kickers have over 20 Avg kickoff distance? Carpenter 64.5 yards..top kickers have over 70 yards average per kick off. Maximum hang time average...Carpenter has 4.41 seconds average hang time..kicker from New Orleans has an average hang time of 5 seconds Average start yard line for Carpenter is 29 yard line...top kickers are on the 23 yard line average Percentage of kicks returned for Carpenter is 90.9 %...top kickers have a return % average around 60% Although Carpenter is very good and comparable with his field goals almost every other stat is quite a bit lower than the best kickers in the league
You understand tha on-side kicks are included in those averages? I think we had 4-5. We also do a lot of directional kicks. They do not have the distance or hang time, not supposed to. Stats are great, as long as you qualify them.
We're spoiled by modern kickers. People with Carpenter's accuracy just didn't exist 30 years ago. The record for field goals in a season was 10 until the 1960s, I think -- and that was with the goal posts on the goal line, not at the back of the end zone. But now there are lots of kickers who just about never miss. Every once in a while you see a kick from the kicker's perspective, and you realize that hitting a 50 yarder is like threading a needle with your foot. But kickers make it look routine. Good as Carpenter is, I think his below-average kickoffs rule him out for the Pro Bowl.
Carpenter is MONEY... He showed that last year as a rookie, and is showing it again... Game winning FG's is like second nature to him... Unfortunately, until Adam retires, there will be difficulty in him getting to the Pro Bowl...
Other teams also have onside kicks as well the stats are what they are sorry you don't like the results
Adam Vinatieri doesn't even kickoff. And he's only attempted like 10 FG's this year. I would hope the fans get that one right. I don't see why Carpenter can't be considered a Pro Bowler. He's at the top of the league in FG percentage (96%). And the distance traveled on his kickoffs isn't that far off from the other top AFC kickers (FG percentage-wise). We do a lot of directional kicking yes. But you also have to consider that some of the top kickoff guys play in Denver (elevation), Atlanta (dome), New Orleans (dome), Indy (dome + kickoff specialist), Carolina (kickoff specialist). OT: Olindo Mare is actually having a pretty good year in Seattle. He's 21/23 and is again near the top of the league in kickoffs.
True, but then the average starting position "should" be lower too if the coverage is there and the kick had some hang time. Carpenter has been money on the FGs, but I think his average to less than average performance on kickoffs will hurt him in any thoughts for pro bowl.
http://profootballfocus.com/by_posi...e=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1 Ron, Here's some stats to support your claim. Now I gotta find some to support mine. I always try to look at both sides.
Dan carptenter IS a pro Bowler. Unfortunatlety the pro Bowl is a Popularity contest which is why Favre got in instead of Pennington last season... Unless we all vote 5-10 Times each Polite and carpenter may Not get in Because no one knows there names
http://www.nfl.com/stats/categoryst...ory=KICKOFF_KICKER&season=2009&seasonType=REG Ron, Here's one more on your behalf from NFL.com. I know we had more than one on side kick but, the official stats are in your favor. You win. I give up. Well done. I hope I do better in our next dispute. LOL
