Running back wants package for between $40-60 million
Marion Barber made it to the Pro Bowl last season without starting a regular-season game. Now, he's looking for a big payday.

The Cowboys have held preliminary talks with the running back's agent, Drew Rosenhaus, according to multiple sources, and are offering a financial package in the $30 million range.

Marion Barber earned his first Pro Bowl berth in 2007, rushing for 975 yards with 10 touchdowns.

BARBER WANTS TO SCALP THE COWBOYS
Posted by Mike Florio on April 17, 2008, 11:56 a.m.
Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber has generated no interest on the restricted free agency market. With the deadline for signing a tender offer with another team coming on Friday, it’s highly unlikely that anyone will cough up a contract that would entail giving a first-round pick and a third-round pick to the Cowboys, if the Cowboys opt not to match it.

And so Barber will play for the Cowboys or no one in 2008, under a one-year deal worth roughly $2.562 million.

Meanwhile, discussions are continuing on a long-term deal, and Barber wants a package worth somewhere between $40 million and $60 million, according to the Dallas Morning News. The Cowboys reportedly have offered a deal worth roughly $30 million.

The demand is in the same ballpark as the contracts paid to the top running backs in the league.

But why would the Cowboys break the bank for the hard-running Barber when he’s still a year away from free agency? Many teams would be inclined to foist the injury risk for 2008 onto the player. If he emerges from the coming season without a torn ACL or other serious injury, then they can talk. Or the Cowboys can put the franchise tag on him.

Also, if the Cowboys are intent on finding another guy to replace Julius Jones and share carries with Barber, should Barber get the same kind of package that would go to a high-end every-down back?

These issues are further proof that paying big money to running backs is always a big risk. A team might get a year or two of ongoing superior production, and then they might just have another Shaun Alexander.
