Lost in all of the buzz around the Miami Dolphins right now is how the team has officially started the march to some notable compensatory draft picks.

According to the numbers crunched by Over The Cap’s Nick Korte, the Dolphins are currently on pace for a pair of third-round picks in the 2025 NFL draft due to the losses of Christian Wilkins and Robert Hunt.

Korte notes that, while Hunt played every snap of Carolina’s Week 1 loss, he might need to play every snap of the season or the comp pick could fall to the fourth round for the Dolphins.

Hunt leaving for the Panthers and Wilkins for the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency this past offseason—combined with a lack of additions to compensate for the losses—will have the Dolphins on a notable comp-pick watch weekly.

Miami could certainly use both of those picks to end up in the third round, too, considering the injury woes that have already hit the interior offensive line since Hunt’s departure and the fact that, while Calais Campbell is still a rotational force, he’s also 38 years old.

The current charting also has the Dolphins receiving an extra seventh-round pick for the departure of defensive back DeShon Elliott, currently a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The whole secret formula with these things is frustrating. I think that the league basically does what they feel like, and helps the teams that they want to do well. Also keep in mind that we traded away our own 3rd round pick to move up to take Jalen Wright, so we really do need those. We do have the Broncos 5th rounder for trading them Chase Edmonds a few years ago.

Would Van Ginkel and/or Davis net us a pick as well? I don’t know the secret formula, either, and would think those guys would be worth something, especially AVG.

There's a limit to what you can get, even with the details being secret. I think we lost so many players we exceeded it.

Lance Zierlein at NFL.com predicts that we will get 3 compensatory picks next year: two thirds for Wilkins and Hunt, and a seventh for Elliot. He said that AVG, Davis and Brandon Jones are canceled out by the additions of Brewer, Brooks and Fuller.

Also, no team can be awarded more than four picks, unless they have a minority candidate hired as head coach or GM. Then they would receive two third round picks in consecutive years. A team that lost a minority candidate to one of these positions would receive three third round picks in consecutive years (49ers lost Carthon and Ryans and got picks this way).
