Yeah, it was somewhat seen coming but still caught me a little by surprise. How often does a team cut a 91% field goal kicker from the previous season? I have my doubts about Carpenter. He has a strong leg but can he make the big time kicks?

We had salary cap room so we could have kept him without any problems. I don't understand this move to be honest.

He was an outspoken players union rep, therefore he had to go. Parcells and Co. won't stand for him trying to speak out against them breaking the status quo they establish. Nothing personal, just business.

Yeah, at least that. I still don't agree with the move but if Lawrence Tynes can get you a sixth rounder, Feely can get you the same.

I don't think too many teams are going to give up a whole lot for a kicker. And its not like he is the best kicker in the league or anything. Hes a good kicker, maybe he'll catch on somewhere else.

Lets hope that Carpenter gets the job done. If not, we'll be bringing others in for tryouts.

I know the Saints have Grammatica in a battle with the rookie they drafted in the seventh round. There is never a shortage of kickers.

For what, a half eaten bag of Doritos and a flat Diet Coke? No one will give up squat for a kicker they know will walk. That way, they can negotiate his contract without having to eat the crap deal he's already got.

So we get rid of a good FG kicker who sucks at kickoffs, and replace him with a kicker who also sucks at kickoffs and may be good at FGs.

PATs? your worried about the points after touchdowns. haa haa. If this team can find the endzone, i am pretty sure the young guy can make a chip shot.

i worry about a pressure 45 yarder that means the game. hmm

Why wouldn't I be worried about PAT's? The guy missed six in college. How can I expect him to make me a big kick for us in the NFL if he's missing PAT's in college?

Did you see these misses. There is also the snap, the hold, and kick to consider when a feild goal is missed. alot of times expecially in college there is a horrible snap or the holder does something and oops--kicker gets the miss. Kind of like when a QB throws to a wideout and the receiver drops it only to be caught by the defense. you will see alot of that this year too!!!

from what i have seen of this guy, he has a big leg and has been pretty accurate. The front office went to save some cash instead of hoping Feely would be healthy. I just hope it wont cost us a game is all.

Thats kind of how I take this as well. Plus we all know how Parcells feels about kickers. For him to be a vocal kicker at that, well we all know about the Vanderjact situation.

Didn't Carpenter drill that first field goal off of the dirt at like 40+ yards Saturday night, that was pretty impressive.

That being said this is still a dumb move, actually its a Cameron like move, because when you have a good kicker you keep him. Plus if he was cut because he was outspoken for the player's union then I lose some respect for Parcells and Co. (well I never liked Parcells' personality or mindset in the first place, sometimes he puts together a good team sometimes he doesn't until someone else takes over the reigns...ie the Cowboys).

Not a huge move but its dumb overall.

I did not reaslly take me by suprise I saw this coming. But I just dont understand a 91% field goal kicker and we get rid of him. But Carpenter should be good. I hope he can hit the big kicks.

I don't like it. It's not a smart move, IMHO. Still, it's not as if our making the playoffs this season hinges on having Feeley as kicker.

I like this move. Bring in a fresh leg and let's see what the kid can do. He hit those two 40+ yard FG's last week let's see how he does this week.

i'm kind of confused why a lot of people are unhappy with this or questioning the move.

you have two kickers on your roster.

One is a veteran, $1M+ salary, currently is injured, and is vocal and a players rep. The other is an undrafted rookie free agent, getting next to squat in pay, is practicing very well, has outperformed the vet in practice, is healthy, and is confidently booting LONG fieldgoals off dirt in the preseason game.

what is to debate? i think it's pretty straight-forward to me. :)

also, to those asking about trading.... other teams know what is going on, no one is going to give us anything. you better bet that parcells & co were trying the trade angle first. for all we know Feely could have been on the block the last two weeks.

They did try to trade Feely, no takers.

I don't know why so many see this as such a negative. Yes, Feely was great last year for the Dolphins. But I'm much more optimistic in that I see this as a sign of faith in Carpenter.

With him and Fields, wouldn't it be nice to have two young kickers we don't have to worry about for the next 5-10 years?

I see this as a good sign. Like when Jimmy Johnson cut Jack Del Rio because of how impressive Zach Thomas was.

I think this had more to do with health than anything. Didn't TS just talk about it being playing time and not injury time? I think you will se people that can't stay on the field go away. Seems to be Bill's MO.

He is but he's a potential problem. Look at all the attention he garnished after the Pittsburgh game last yr. Second guessing the coach, etc. You expect that kind of flack from your star defensive lineman, or star QB, but you dont expect that from a kicker. To quote Peyton Manning "Idiot Kicker".

Like posted earlier he's injured plus he's being out hustled by the rook. If we can go with a younger less expensive kicker and it works, by all means, lets do it. A kicker is the least of our concerns right now anyways, let Henne do the kicks for all I care, I just want a winning team.

I don't blame them for cutting Feely...He annoyed me last season with the way he talked so much, he just joined the team and talked like he'd been a dolphin for 10 years through thick and thin...I dunno, just always was like "stfu feely" whenever he always inevitably had something to say about everything.

kickers should be seen and not heard...i agree with that

Exactly he is a kicker. Now I know he can win or lose games for us. But he is not going to "keeek a touchdown". Kickers should be appreciated when they do well and ridiculed when they screw up, but they should never be an outspoken player for a team unless he has been there with tenure.

Well after reading a few articles about how and what was said to Feely prior to the cuts. Than saying the competition was not even close kinda bugs me..

For thos who have not read this..

    http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/61895

Im going to take a bet here that Feeley lands in the AFC east and quite possible wins a game against us. He's a great kicker and Buffalo and the Jets might wan't to add him there roster. Plus he seems like he would like to stick it to us if possible..

Hey stupid, it was your big mouth you dummy. Go read threads about you on Finheaven and ThePhins.com. Parcells don't like big mouths, and don't like kickers. A big mouth kicker?

Maybe it's just me but as long as my kicker makes over 90% of his attempts, he can have a mouth as big as Parcells belly. But then again, my ego isn't as big as Bill's either.

Along the lines of if my WR gets more than 1,300 yards he can do whatever he wants? Some coachs subscribe to that, some don't.

Carpenter is cheaper, younger and doesn't talk as much.

feely is proven, loud and expensive.

If we were a favorite to go into the playoffs and needed a reliable leg, feely would have been kept. Since were not, get the kid experience along with the rest of the young team, so he is the reliable kicker that is needed a few years from now.

This move made total sense. We will have a less expensive good kicker and we released a player with a high salary.

No. There's a difference between having a big mouth and actually doing stuff that's harmful to your organisation. Feely certainly wasn't on the quiet side but I've never heard him say anything that could honestly be considered as harmful to the Miami Dolphins. Actually, I find it quite refreshing to have on my team a guy who's got a brain and something to say instead of the horribly unbearable PR junk that comes out of everyone else's mouths. But that's just me. Generally speaking I don't particularly fancy it when adult people are told what and when they are allowed to say something. If the guy said something harmful - cut away. Feely didn't. He was cut because Parcells prefers his players to be little puppets with strings attached and I prefer the people running the team I'm fond of not to be complete jerks who believe that an NFL team has to be run like a Soviet Gulag.

He kept going on ESPN and the Jim Rome show saying he didn't want Ricky Williams on his team. When Jay is the head coach he can say this, but not as a Kicker. Who needs a loud mouth kicker causing division in the locker room? Good riddance Jay. :tongue2:
