Colts GM Polian: Drafting Hughes was a mistake

padre31Luxury BoxOPWhen the Colts were on the clock with their first round pick, he decided to choose pass-rusher Jerry Hughes from TCU. One of the big considerations at that spot was tackle Rodger Saffold, who wound up going to the Rams two picks later.
In the upset of the year, Polian admits that he made the wrong choice.
The guys at StampedeBlue.com report Polian said on his radio show that the team should have taken Saffold in hindsight. The Colts saw Saffold as a right tackle only, but he’s been rock solid in St. Louis as a left tackle. Hughes, on the other hand, has three tackles on the season. He’s usually inactive.
Polian is as good as any G.M. at finding the right players for the Colts system. He thinks a few years in the future.
Oddly enough, Saffold was the guy I wanted prior to the Marshall trade.
Well Hughes still has that potential and it would be a different thing if Freeney or Mathis went down, but atm Polian is having a case of buyer's remorse with Hughes.
gilv13Forum VeteranThey drafted BPA on their draft board vs a need. You can't fault them for who they drafted looking back. Also the fact Hughes is playing behind 2 of the best in the game probably doesn't help his playing time either.

The G ManForum VeteranKinda surprised that Polian would make that kind of an admission to the media. Wonder how Hughes feels to hear that kind of a comment? Besides, long term he could still end up being a great pick.

I'm not, the guys one of the best drafters, but he's also a douche. This is the same guy that threw his OL under the bus after losing the super bowl not that long ago.
