Chris Mortenson just said on ESPN that Hickey signed a 2 year deal

This offseason has been a joke:

-Our new GM only go an interview because he sort of knows our HC
-He is only hired because Licht/Farmer/Dawson/Caserio first said NO (not to mention Gamble/DeCosta/McCoughlin won't even interview)
-Eveyone in the league knows Hickey signed 2 year deal and yet our franchise goes out of its way to deny it
-Our HC/GM are on a short leash

How do we sign free agents? No one will want to play here. Players know that loyalty goes out the window when HC and GM change. Different schemes and philosophies mean different players.

    What could go wrong?

I believe Benton was the OL coach in Houston when Sherman was the OC there. In light of the Philbin/Sherman connection (notwithstanding Sherman's firing this offseason) I'm not sure if being a Sherman crony makes him a de facto Philbin crony.

So many things, so little time.

First of all, Hickey got the job because he knows Philbin? That's news to me. I don't think they had any kind of relationship previously.

I can't argue you're second point. Right you are.

Everyone in the league knows Hickey signed a 2 year deal? The Dolphins are saying that's not true. Why would they deny it or lie about it? That makes no sense.

Lastly, I don't know why everyone thinks Philbin is on such a short leash. Ross adores him. I think Philbin would be fired if 2014 was a disaster but other than that I don't think he's in any great danger.

Free agents will sign here for the same reason they'd sign anywhere else. Money. Let's not pretend Miami is some awful place to be.

    Per Bleacher Report:
"While Hickey was a scout with the Buccaneers in the 1990s, he was in charge of scouting the Midwest.

At the time, Philbin was an assistant at Iowa under Kirk Ferentz. Through Philbin's job as an assistant coach and Hickey's job as a scout, the two met around that time, according to the Miami Herald's Adam Beasley. Fast forward to 2012, when the Buccaneers were looking for a head coach. One of the people interviewed for the job was Philbin. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, that's the first time the two bonded."

Regarding the two year deal, Walker of ESPN reported multiple sources. I'm guessing it's language that allows the team to say that the deal is more than two years. Probably a 3rd is their option, which ties the GM up at a salary if they like what he does over the next two years, but counts for nothing if the cut ties.

Finally, most free agents go where the cash is. But the top free agents factor in other things. Peyton is the best example. Teams still compete for FAs. And they want to get paid AND win.

If that's the qualification for being a crony, then every coach he's shaken hands with after a game is a crony.
