Oh, well yea. But at least we know he isn't going to be tied down to him for longer than a year if it fails.
I guess. But you think if he does a terrible job and we miss the playoffs that they wouldn't clear house anyways most likely.

What length of contract did Licht get from the Bucs? How about all the new GMs last year? Is a 2 year deal really all that out of the ordinary?

It speaks to how the team feels about the person they just hired to be GM.
Well I agree. But he still can be fired regardless of a 1 year deal or 6 year deal.

I was scared he would fire Philbin and keep Hickey, to be honest.
Media is gonna be licking their chops at this story.
The drama never ends.

Just looked it up. Licht got four years. Have to check the guys from last year.

Yea, god I would hope not. But I don't put anything past this Franchise.

Basically what Ross did at GM was buy high and sell low, ignoring all pertinent crap that drove down the value of the position in the process as if he thought the GM opening alone would create a stampede of top notch candidates. If he's so insistent on Philbin, Aponte, and so forth, he should've kept Ireland along with them to either wipe the disappointing slate clean next year or to hope he achieves enough stabilization next year to secure a new GM w/o having to sell low.

I'm starting to believe the reports that what Ross wanted to do was keep Ireland in charge of personnel but make Aponte his boss. He never intended to bring in a personnel guy over Jeff.

Ireland wouldn't have stayed.
“Come on, shake your body baby, do that conga!”
Smh if Ross has this little confidence in his current personnel, he should have just fired Philbin and restarted the whole thing, instead of basically putting it off for 2 years.

If he wasn't offered a demotion he would have.
On the draft Quentin Rollins bandwagon.
From an ownership standpoint a two-year deal is the equivalent of a one-year deal given to a player.
In both cases the timeline for making an evaluation is one year. It's just that you don't ever want your GM or your HC to be in the final year of their contract because you don't want them being stupid with the franchise's long term solvency in order to buy themselves a little more time in the short term.

It's really crazy when you think about this hire...the fact that he was like 10th on the wish list is completely irrelevant to him, this is a guy who probably would have never been offered a GM position on any other team, not only that but there was a good chance that he was about to lose his current job in Tampa, and here comes Miami not only offering him a job but a promotion to the highest front office executive position on a team. he doesn't give a **** that it's a 2 year deal, it's a raise, a promotion, his dream job, one would assume...I mean accepting the offer was a no brainer for this guy.
Even with his raise, Hickey had to come a lot cheaper than Caserio or some of the other guys we interviewed.
Yeah I'm happy about this. Great news.
I'm wondering if Lake Dawson was only offered a two year deal and that's why he walked. He did mention in his statement that the "details of the offer didn't align with my vision".

That's the best news I've seen in weeks with the Dolphins.
I am not necessarily in the crowd that seems to be certain Hickey will fail, but this is good news to me because it means that Ross might be willing to blow the whole thing up sooner rather than later if they fail.
Yes but im thinknig deeper into it. Ross tried to keep Ireland around and take away his power. Because he has to pay him anyway. Now he's keeping a coach around who teamed up with another staff member against Irelend. A back stabbing pair are still here. So now we here he may have insisted that a GM sign a 2 year deal? Even if its not entirely true. I'm begining to think that Ross is a cheap as SOB whos more worried about how much money people are walking away with than whats happening for the good of the team he owns.

Well this might buy some time for Ross to look for that Czar Barry Jackson has been reporting he is considering. Things go south and the Czar comes in at the end of this year ala' Bill Parcells, while Cam Cameron was here, to evaluate the entire operation. Heads roll and you end up paying the GM and Coach 1 year contracts to go away as opposed to longer deals.
I'm amazed by the fact that, as fans, it's come to the point where we're honestly celebrating the fact that we'll only be stuck with these guys for two years. That is, instead of actually hiring good people, we're excited that the bad hires won't last too long.

I tried like hell to find out how long Jets GM John Idzik's contract is for, but I came up empty. I would hope it is longer than 2 years.

I'm sure it is longer, I'm assuming he wasn't their 7th or 8th choice.

I can imagine a fan from a winning franchise thinking, let's see what Dolphins fans are like, browses thephins and sees a bunch of lunatics celebrating the fact that these bad hires are gone in two years.
This is fantastic news. A two year deal is essentially a 1 year deal. Either way we could end up "winning" as fans. If Philbin and Hickey exceed our expectations we can't possibly be angry with a playoff appearance and true signs of improvement. If they bomb (more likely) we may finally get the re-set that the fan base has been demanding for years. It may also nudge Ross to finally hire a Czar that he desperately needs.
My dream scenario next season:
"Czar" role: JT
GM: Marc Ross
HC: David Shaw
Ironically Shaw and Ross both got their start with the Eagles organization in 1997. But we can leave that discussion for another time.
if true, it's basically a one year prove it deal. You don't ever want your GM in his seat with less than a year remaining on his contract. That's why we extended Jeff Ireland, albeit quietly, last offseason. Ireland only had one year left on his contract at the time.
