Chargers obsessed with Patriots

Call it an obsession, a fixation, or at the very least a more than understandable preoccupation. But from top to bottom as an organization, the Chargers have it for the Patriots, in spades. And why not? San Diego has gone a combined 27-9 (.750) the past two seasons, cruising to AFC West titles by five games in 2006 and four in 2007. But San Diego is 0-3 against the NFL's team of the decade in that span, losing twice to New England in the playoffs and once in a much-anticipated Week 2 Sunday night showdown last season. People in the know in San Diego say the quest to conquer the Patriots is all-consuming in Chargers-land, permeating things both large and small. When San Diego selected Arizona cornerback Antoine Cason in the first round this year, sources within the organization say it was all about finding someone to cover dangerous Patriots slot receiver Wes Welker. Another part of the equation was it would allow gifted cover man Antonio Cromartie, the Chargers' Pro Bowl cornerback, to focus like a laser on New England's ultimate play-maker, receiver Randy Moss.

Regan21286New MemberMakes them seem like a serial killer. With that secondary, sure looks like it. Cromartie, Jammer, Cason? Yeesh. Teams are starting to emphasize the pass and it looks like they're well geared against it.

The New England defense has regressed with Samuel, Gay, Colvin and Wilson gone and Bruschi, Seau, Vrable and Seymour all 1 year older while the San Diego offense will be better with Jackson emerging late in the year and Chambers becoming more familiar with the playbook, the city and his teamates. That said. The Chargers aren't as good as their record. Sure they stomp the teams that aren't any good. But they normally lose to stiff competition.

124New MemberSan Diego came damn close in the AFC Championship Game with a 25% healthy (at best) Philip Rivers and no LaDainain Tomlinson. Now both are back healthy and strong and now have a speedy Corner in Cason to cover Welker in the slot and other fast receivers in the slot (or so they hope). They're a very good team. They could take down New England this year, but I still think Indianapolis is the best team, despite what San Diego did last year. Dungy made a stupid move like he did in previous years, except 2006, and benched his star players in the final game. You cannot do that Tony, havn't you learned?

MuckRetired AdminRemains to be seen whether Cason can cover Wes Welker. Very few corners can cover the slot effectively. I wouldn't automatically assume a rookie can cover one of the game's best it until the kid actually takes a snap.
