http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/cfl-players-of-interest-to-nfl/article1417695/ Adarious Bowman...wow...Draft 07, that cat had the worst preDraft period I've ever seen. Foley took over Wake's role in BC a Richard Wade signing, normally Wade finds incredible athletes who are uniquely suited to the CFL, he is with the Hamilton Ti Cats at the moment and developing a ex UHI te named Patek to play Lb. Keron Williams was a runner up to Wake for Most Outstanding Defensive Player, he is like Anthony Hargrove for the Saints, a DT who penetrates well. Brandon Browner is interesting as well, he has unusual size for a CFL Db, and there simply must be a way to translate ball skills from the CFL to the NFL, a CFL free safety will have seen twice the number of passing plays a college FS will have. Fun Stuff, we already snagged Grice-Mullens
Cowboys signed Winnipeg Blue bomber and ex Oregon State Lb: Darnell Dogget Cowpokes have signed 3 CFLers kicker Suisham is also an ExCFLer. Great white north football getting some love, the Cowboys have a Scout whose territory is the CFL and we also have some scouts up there. I'd love to take a look at Adarious Bowman in TC.
Oregon State head coach Mike Riley has ties to Winnipeg as he and his father both were head coaches here.
The Jest signed the top CFL kick returner, Colts sign CFL DPOY and: So the Cowpokes signed 3 CFLers, the Jest signed 3, the Colts signed Chick and kept Giguere on their roster or ps all season long. It would seem the NFL is trying to mine the CFL the league that just a year ago the Cameron Wake detractors said "was not even College Football". http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/cfl-players-on-move-to-nfl/article1425186/ I'm telling ya, Ireland should scout the American Football Association of Italy..the CFL is getting a bit crowded with NFL guys looking for prospects.
The CFL has certainly picked up it's quality of talent d22, typically a handful of players every couple of years would make the NFL, guys like Terry Grier and "Gizmo" Williams, but this new breed of CFLer has NFL measurables and on some units like ST they can play Day 1. Wake showed CFL defenders can make the jump, Stefan Logan showed a good kick returner is a good kick returner and can play in either league. Add in the years of CFL experience not counting towards Practice Squad eligibility and the reasons for the interest become apparent. Plus Tsoumpas at 6'5 330/30 reps of 225 is a NFL lineman in measurables, I hope the Phins come up with another CFL gem. Now if they could just stop running towards the line of scrimmage before the ball is snapped!
Another BC lion to head to Dolphins? This is of interest to CFL/Dolphins fans: http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Foley+eyes+Florida+trip+just/2430820/story.html FWIW. Foley is 6'2 245 or so.
Here is a link for an article that details the agreement the leagues have with one another. It certainly provides incentive for some players to come here, play , get experience , exposure and if they perform well return after one season. http://stage.www.winnipegfreepress....of-option-year-during-cba-talks-81209622.html Doug Brown btw played in the NFL as well as a Canadian . There are a lot of ties that most American fans don't realize , this is understandable of course. Cal Murphy , the scout for the Colts was a long time coach for Winnipeg as well. I liked Hefney , he is short though at 5-9 .
Discovered some interesting 2008 combine stuff: Grice Mullen ran a 4.36 at the NFL combine Dimitri Tsoumpas was #30 on the bench press, Samual Giguere had a 42 inch vertical leap http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/pdleaders.php?draftyear=2008 Gotta admit, Foley and Tsoumpas are interesting players, Foley did have a shot in Baltimore, but had only one tryout, Wake had about 6 tryouts then eventually wound up in the CFL.
padre you are quickly becoming the CFL Guru. Pretty soon you'll be drinking Mooseheads and talking hockey with Soundwave ay
Just trying to think like Ireland thinks, clearly CFL talent is in play this offseason and contrary to what most NFL fans think not all CFL players are too short/slow/unathletic to play NFL ball at a high level. Ricky Foley was a decathelete and had scholarship offers from Baylor for track and field. Tsoumpas and Mullen are interesting players Adamp, not in love with them per se, but Mullen busting a 4.36 would make him the second fastest player on the roster, maybe third, watch out Ted Ginn... I recall when we signed Cam Wake and even longtime fans said "CFL? Their Olinemen would not even start in Div I football blah blah blah". And Hockey is my #2 sport, I'm a Sabres fan and Hurricane fan, Tyler Myers is a beast eh?
you are correct. we definitely made the great white north our personal minor leagues. i remember liking Bowman coming out of college. wondering what he's looking like
Certainly, I no longer go to beer garden type places though so the better Canadian Beers are off the menu, that and I rarely imbibe anymore.
Bowman, Malcolm Kelly, Marcus Monk, Boomer liked Bowman iirc and I recall vividly during the draft thread Boomer saying "he is not even going to be drafted" and that was rd 5 or so. The Jest signed Qb Ray from the CFL a couple of years ago and have been large players this offseason, scoring the Alouettes KR Taylor was a coup, the last thing the Phins need is for the Jest to land their own version of Stefan Logan. Brandon Browner has nice size for Cb, if he ran a decent 40 he would be worth a look, and Foley plays ST in the CFL, he made it through the Raven's Traning Camp, but was cut and did not want to go on the practice squad, he made it further than Wake did in his first go around in the NFL.
It's been a long time since a CFL Qb has made the jump to the NFL and started, with Trestamen in Montreal maybe a new one will appear. He is rumoured to be in line for a shot at the Bills HC job, he may end up with it because no NFL coach wants to interview for it. A Jest OC turns down a shot at the Bills job? What is the world coming to!
Bowman had a pretty good year here ( Winnipeg ) . The team had very inconsistent QB play for the whole year , excepting for a few games where Michael Bishop was in a semi groove. He has very good size , and showed flashes certainly. The cost , both monetarily and acquisition wise is minimal to what may be imo. Miami isn`t new to this , they have a history of players from the CFL albeit there is a more pronounced emphasis currently. It is a different game in many ways , however as I have previously mentioned it is by far the best league not called the NFL , and that is becoming evident to the average NFL fan and to NFL team managements as well.
Hmm this is interesting: http://www.thestarphoenix.com/enter...r+John+Chick+couldn+refuse/2428665/story.html The colts were one of the teams that worked out Cam Wake last offseason, Bill Polian passed, but signed Chick who is not the player Wake was imho. But still, "a 1 million dollar signing bonus" as if that is a huge sum, a #3 pick will receive at least that much after the Draft. The CFL.ca used to have different channels for each team on youtube, but I can no longer find them.
Rediscovered the CFL.ca highlight/game reels from 2009: Tsoumpas: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3lTaX_J8Buw&feature=SeriesPlayList&p=59339C0F883D6C2D"]YouTube- CFL Calgary 35, Edmonton 34 - September 4, 2009[/ame] 4:14 and 4:50, Tsoumpas (#67)should be called "stumpus" as that cat can hold his ground like a Center, I watched every Calgary game on youtube and there was only one player who got the best of him a DT from Edmonton. When Tsoumpas sets up, the rest of the Calgary line is pushed up field, he is the only guy still on the line of scrimmage flat out stoning his guy. Rickey Foley with an average spin move for a sack at 3:01: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7CiwkZlXpw&feature=SeriesPlayList&p=59339C0F883D6C2D"]YouTube- CFL BC 36, Toronto 28 - August 14, 2009[/ame] Brandon Browner with the nice one handed Int beginning at 2:00: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8whHsoKL4g&NR=1"]YouTube- CFL Hamilton 14, Calgary 15 - October 3, 2009[/ame] Reminds me of a poor man's version of Sean Smith. Grice Mullen has two nice plays in the first 1 minute of the video: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hU3nsMia7VA&feature=related"]YouTube- CFL Saskatchewan 16, BC 19 - October 2, 2009[/ame]
BC is absolutely being mugged: Wally Bono and BC apparently has the best eye for players who can play in the NFL but are available for CFL duty. With 54 Jr's coming out in the NFL draft as a spillover the CFL could land some players who slipped through the cracks "down south" and bump the talent in the CFL.
Here is a bit of a surprise: The CFL's talent level has gotten much better, Harrel was a good prospect and he did not last a year in the CFL. Stefan Logan has opened doors for a couple of CFL kick returners.
CFL uses 3 Qb's, if he couldn't make it with the Roughriders chances are good he just doesn't have the arm to play pro football and is opting for coaching instead. Heck, not even the UFL?
lol. finished reading what you wrote after i posted yeah if he couldnt beaat out 2nd string he simply sucks
Harrell is like most quarterbacks that come from that Mike Leach/Hal Mumme system. It is a difficult transition from that offense to the NFL. They aren't asked to make very many reads, and many of the ones that do make are predetermined reads. They throw to spots on the field instead of reading the defense, reading the receiver, and throwing based off that. Graham Harrell, Cody Hodges, Sonny Cumbie, Kliff Kingsbury, Tim Couch......monster numbers in that offense but could not adjust to the NFL. I think there is a drastic difference between the Leach spread and the run and shoot that June Jones runs. Quarterbacks in Jones's offense at least have sight reads that they have to make. Does the offense boost their production? Yes. I think Jones's quarterbacks have more experience actually making pre snap reads and adjustments on the fly.
And sadly, there will be no more Warren Moons or Doug Flutie's coming out of the CFL anymore, the Zone Read has made it up North.
Yvenson Bernard former oregon st rb plays for winnipeg. Alexis serna does as well..won the Lou graza award..I'd say mike Riley has ties to Winnipeg lol
Ricky Foley to tryout with Jets http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Ricky+Foley+latest+Lion+bolt/2496586/story.html He has other tryouts upcoming, but his real value imho is as a ST player, perenial Pro Bowler STer Brandon Adyenbajo had a similar career in the CFL. And: Stevie Baggs is an interesting player, he has more size than Foley, he is more like Austen Lane or Brandon Lang or Cam Sheffield. I do hope that "and other teams" includes the Miami Dolphins in re Ricky Foley, this yr's free agent crop is so thin, I'd take a look at Baggs and Foley, but my gut tells me Foley would make a quicker impact in the NFL on Special Teams.
Ricky Foley's (I thought that was the dude who used to host Comicview on BET?) tour of the NFL tryout circuit rolls on:
If you can kick outdoors in Canada in the cold and wind, then you are more than likely a NFL quality kicker.
