Being reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Panthers are expected to outright cut their former MVP today. At 31 years old, Cam should have an easy 4-5 quality years left. Injuries in recent years are a concern, but he's had most of a year to rest and heal up.

Imagine taking the BPA at #5? Or trading down to get even more picks for 2020 and 2021? Miami could have a good team to put around Cam with a solid draft. You could still grab Tua or Herbert at #5 as insurance in case Cam does not work out. The best of both worlds.

I think the idea of signing Cam is worth looking into, assuming he does not want 30+ million dollars per year. He won't cost any draft picks, so that is another plus.

I would think the Panthers have a better idea of what is left in his tank than anyone.

If they arent interested in him, IMO there is a legitimate reason.

That said, teams do make mistakes.

    I'm against it.

Our future lies in the draft and if that's the case there's no reason to waste more money on a bridge QB. Roll with Fitz. Besides, except for one year Newton was never really impressive so it's not like we'd be getting someone that could transform this team's playoff chances.

I would expect Cam to land with the Chargers. A face for the team in LA and that seems like a place Cam would enjoy anyway. That also takes them out of the QB draft talk (probably, depends on the money) which would be nice for Miami.

Ahh the offseason...where every player that gets released the Dolphins should pick them up.

Miami has a veteran quarterback already signed to the roster who will be starting Week 1 until Rosen or a high rookie draft pick is ready to go.

Not interested. Dude looked finished - we need to invest in youth, not aging vets who can't overcome injury problems.

At this point in his career I don't think he is worth $10 million or more than Ryan Fitzpatrick. I do not trust him to stay healthy and would rather try for the rookie quarterback so Miami could do something like sign whoever the Clowney is next year.

Well their backup QB didnt look as bad last year either, wich is probably an easier decision for them to move on.

While I get the point, there is no evidence that Tua can't/won't overcome his injury, and barring that, go crazy for Burrow or just sit and take Herbert/Love.

He should sign for a team like the Titans were last year. i.e. A solid team that has questions at the QB position. Maybe the Pats fit the bill, but I don’t think he matches what BB wants in a QB. The Bears could have been the answer before they traded for Foles.

Miami is building a team to take advantage of having a rookie QB on his rookie contract for the next 3 to 4 years. Paying a veteran QB veteran QB money doesn’t fit Miami”s plans

There has got to be some market for a man with that much talent.

i get the reasons why people dislike him.. but the guy is an above average football player and should be a starter.

i dont understand what the hell anyone sees in Teddy Bridgewater and why the Panthers were dumb enough to bite on that bait. Teddy Bridgewater was barely average when Brees went down even with all the talent surrounding him. They won despite of him, much like we won games with Fiedler.. picking Teddy over Cam is all time dumb and this upcoming season will prove that.

I was waiting to see if any team was also dumb enough to pay the 1st round tender price on Taysom Hill..

i have a feeling Cam and Jameis will both get blackballed..

    Overrated?

In his 7 full seasons since his rookie deal (pre-2019), Cam Newton:

    1. Started at least 14 games in all 7 seasons (1 of 6 QBs)

    2. Threw less than 17 INTs in all 7 seasons (1 of 5 QBs)

    3. Ran for 300+ yds in all 7 seasons (only QB)

    4. 150+ pass TDs & 40+ rush TDs (only QB

    Please stop

They arent really full seasons if you play less than 16 games. Just saying.

He was a good QB, borderline great and great at times, but its likely hes done.

You know.. when you kept arguing about Brady being the GOAT you repeatedly based your argument on 3 things: SB wins, playoff wins and popular opinion. Didn't matter what else was pointed out, those were the things that mattered for you.

Newton in the SB = 0-1
Newton in the playoffs = 3-4

And popular opinion? Show me the popular opinion supporting the massive hype this guy has had throughout his career. Who ranks Newton in the elite or near elite category? Because that's where you'd have to rank him for him NOT to be overrated.

Newton is overrated because of the hype. He was massively hyped when drafted #1 overall, continued to be hyped throughout much of his career and was even one of the faces of the NFL during a time when he never really had the numbers to back it up.

Oh, and some of the numbers you list aren't really impressive. You mentioned his INT's, but his INT% is actually slightly worse than league average. And if you look at things statistically only (I know you dismiss stats.. I remember that from the Brady vs. Peyton argument) Newton as a passer is actually slightly below average over his career with a -0.133 z-score. That doesn't include his scrambling ability so I have no issue with someone saying his scrambling ability puts him slightly above average, but relative to the hype.. he's vastly underperformed.

Yeah.. Newton is definitely overrated IMO.

I still don't understand how the Bears' GM has a job. He doubled down on the Mitch Mistake by trading for Nick Effing Foles? When you could have just plucked Cam or Jameis off the street? Not that I think either dude is gonna be a game changer, but Nick Foles and his massive contract? I feel bad for Khalil Mack.

Nick has a higher floor than Cam or Jameis - Cam because if injury risk, Jameis because of turnover risk. Also a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush, at the time he made the trade it wasn’t certain either would be available. So it is an understandable move even if it isn’t the move I would have made.

The boneheaded move IMO was not securing Tannehill last year when he could have been had cheap to ameliorate the risk of Trubisky. This applies equally to Tampa Bay as Mariota, Trubisky and Winston all were obvious dangers of regressing in play and Tannehill would have been a good security blanket for all 3 teams. The Bears and the Bucs would probably have made the playoffs with a mid-season change of QB to Tannehill.

And, for at me at least, I am happy with Fitzpatrick as our veteran QB right now. He can hold down the fort until the rook is ready for extended playing time.

No thanks! Never been a big fan of him as a passing QB. In his prime, impossible to bring down, used feet to extend plays but never a top tier QB in spite of winning the MVP. Not in his prime now so hard pass.

Honestly if we were going to make a dumb QB move, I'd take Winston before Cam even though I dont like Winston as a QB at all.

At least with Winston you get a fairly clean injury slate and the hope that his eye surgery helps cut his boneheaded throws down a bit.

That said I dont want either.

I have mixed feelings on Newton. Since I'm in the Carolinas I've probably watched him more than most and at times, he was clearly invincible on the field. He couldn't be tackled....could make any throw or just run for the TD. There were days I would have swore he was one of the best all-time QB's. But we all know that he wasn't that player consistently. I mean, he was always pretty good, but then he had that entire other gear that he could go to as Superman and silence the opposing crowd.

Cam is also highly likable as a person- his interviews are always funny and he's a people's person. Rumors are that he wanted out of Carolina with the new owner but he never said a single cross word to the press about it. So I'm torn with Cam, I know who he is when he's playing at his best and that guy's a potential Super Bowl MVP. Players believe in him and play hard for him...in fact, you won't find anyone in the Carolinas who doesn't like the guy.

My vote would be to sign him ASAP...but at the same time I know he's not a long-term solution and really not a fit for the direction we're heading as a franchise.

Newton is a player who keeps a team on nothing more than a treadmill, while they pay their QB fairly big bucks and get no greater a chance of winning a Super Bowl with him at QB.

The year Carolina went 15-1 and went to the Super Bowl, Newton played fairly well, but the real strength of the team was its league-leading pass defense, which surrendered an opposing passer rating of 73.5 (league average that year was 90.2). In the Super Bowl, the pass defense continued its ways and held Peyton Manning to a passer rating of 56.6, but Newton turned in a trash performance himself of 55.4.

Based on the rest of his career, you'd need a pass defense that strong to get him anywhere near the Super Bowl again, and that's highly unlikely to be accomplished. This isn't a guy you go with if you want to win a Super Bowl. Teams would be smart to view him as a career backup at this point.

No thanks. I'll still with Fitzmagic for low $ a year maybe even two while we groom our franchise QB and build up the rest of the team. Stick with the plan. Don't get greedy. That is how we've always face planted in the past. Getting greedy.

Just like Clowney.. if that fool wants to turn down 17m/yr that's his own problem. I don't want players that are obsessed with riches, I want players that are at least equally obsessed with playing football. Cam Newton is a guy who is going to be looking for the biggest contract, almost guaranteed, with all the teams that need a QB.

Just saw an article stating we are the favorites for Newton on a lot of betting sites.

Hopefully they are wrong. I dont hate him as a person, and if he was guaranteed to be 100% healthy and play his best ball...I could look past his flaws, but those things are extreme long shots.

We dont need to be shooting three pointers from half court. Let's get to the rim with high percentage shots, to use a basketball analogy.

If we are the favorites then my guess is Ross is pushing for it to happen.. my problem is we dont have the talent in place for Cam... Cam always had a strong offensive line..

Cam is definitely a Gailey type quarterback..

if the dolphins were to pursue cam i think there will be big money numbers in the contract but guarantee money wont be what Cam might expect. It would be a prove it deal, sorta like what Revis got in Tampa.

If we are going to shoot for 3 pointers from half court I’d rather go with Jameis Winston. Cam’s injury history worries me a lot.

There's also a lot of betting sites where Miami isn't the favorite to sign him. And the ones where they are they are +300 with three or four teams at +350.

Not overwhelming odds whatsoever. Calm down.

His injury problems are real but not enough people talk about the way he's lost his mental edge. Worst thing to happen to a QB in my opinion. Hard pass

Think of Cam as the opposite of Tannehill; a QB who does exactly what's scripted every time. Cam Newton plays fast and loose...it's not a style a lot of teams would want to build around since you're giving up a lot of control.

I think that's where you're getting that he's lost his "mental edge"...he was on a team that no longer appreciated the way he led the offense. I think he could still be highly productive in the right offense and earn some franchise a ring.
