I'm hoping to move out to CA within the next few years and have a small arsenal of guns. I'm currently looking at buying an AR-15 upper but am a bit wary of the California's gun laws. I'm trying to build it to be bad *** yet still meet their requirements. I've found some information, but still have a few questions for y'all out there that have experience with your states laws..... I'm hoping to move to the SF area btw..which complicates matters further... Correct me if I'm wrong but I can have an AR-15 as long it..... A. Has a fixed clip or B. It can have a removable clip as long as it's not made from a lower on a certain list (can't find it), doesn't have a pistol grip, grenade mount, flare mount, flash supressor, collapsable stock etc. etc. Is that correct? If so, is it legal to own a tactical stock if it's not mounted on the gun? (i.e. it's in a box and the gun is fully built with a legal stock) From what I've read I only have to register my Sig 226, but my SKS, Ruger 10-22, and 12 guage should all be fine? Thanks for the help, if there's anything else (or rumors) that you know about I'd love to hear them. Thanks!
Hope this helps. http://ag.ca.gov/firearms/dwcl/ http://www.calguns.net/caawid/flowchart.pdf http://www.hoffmang.com/firearms/Sacramento-PD-OLL_Training_Bulletin-2008-11-18.pdf
I have a CA legal AR-15 and let me tell you, I'd have better firepower with a revolver. One way for it to be legal is a fixed clip yes and that and only that will allow you to have a pistol grip, telescoping stock, etc. It gets much more nebulous if you have detachable mags, pretty much what you listed. There's much more comprehensive info online if you search california legal AR-15 but I understand the confusion, it can be ambiguous with some loopholes. The sites calphin listed are great resources and I went there when I first considered the AR-15. For the record, I sent mine (a Bushmaster XM15-E2S) to my uncle in Pennsylvania, where it's now no longer registered in CA to me and modified to where it's no longer CA legal.
