Thought it would be a good idea to have a thread detailing the bowls that players people think the Dolphins may be interested in are playing in. Tomorrow for example: The New Mexico Bowl, Wyoming v Fresno State Players to watch: For Wyoming, John Fletcher: http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=14879&draftyear=2010&genpos=DE 6'6 272, he could be a late round mtn west pick that Ireland loves to make, he would project as a SOLB and he plays special teams already for the Cowboys, he would make a good replacement for Erik Walden imho For Fresno State: Ryan Matthews Scored a ton at FS, nice size at 6'0 220. http://www.nfldraftbible.com/Players/List/2011-Big-Board/Ryan-Mathews.html
Amazing, a Patriot's fan has already done all of the homework: http://www.nepatriotsdraft.com/2009/12/nfl-draft-homework-new-mexico-bowl.html
Don't forget about Lonyae Miller. He hasn't had a lot of work this year because of Ryan Matthews but he's got some talent too. AJ Jefferson is also raw but talented.
Thought this might be helpful as it gives all the Bowl Games and where they can be seen. http://espn.go.com/college-football/bowls
This is cool cause we'll be able to get info on guys that we cant see, this thread will end on Jan 7th after the champ game. Is that the plan, to keep this thread open for all of them?
Well, one of the things I love about Bowl games is they are the closest a prospect will come to being prepared for a NFL game without being in the NFL. College staffs are limited to 17 hours a week, of course there are ways around that limit " but" cumulatively the 3 weeks or more of prep time roughly equals the effort a good NFL staff would put in for a regular season game. Airotutu will have the benefit of all of that prep time the same as Matthews, who knows, maybe he surprises everyone with a big game?
AJ Jefferson hasn't trained on. He has first round ability as I mentioned last year but has struggled.
A guy I am curious to see more of is Marcus Easley from UCONN. 6'2'' 216 lbs WR - #29 Only started one year, although he did get some action his junior year, although limited production. Regardless, this year he still had 44 receptions for 853 yards and 8TD's. Just for reference, he had double the receptions of anyone else on the team, and UCONN's QB situation is putrid at best, and has been for a while now in the program, even going back 2-3 years minimum. Their offensive line has also underperformed compared to the level produces by William Beatty and our own Donald Thomas. Easley is very raw, but he makes plays.....although he doesn't always run hard from what I've seen if he expects the ball to go somewhere else. Not every play, but it does happen. He does appear to be an adequate bocker, but again I NEED to see more of him. He could be a nice mid to late round guy to snatch up.
for the fresno vs wyoming game these are the players i will watch fresno state rb lonyae miller rb ryan matthews wr seyi ajirotutu og devan cunningham og andrew jackson de chris carter cb aj jefferson wyoming og zach kennedy dt john fletcher nt fred givens de mitch unrein cb marcell gipson fs chris prosinski
I like his open field tackling. I watched him a couple times last year and that stood out. I don't know how he is this year though.
Gotta admit it, Fletcher, #91, has looked good so far, better than I thought he would. He was moved out on a double team, but he has also shown a decent burst and pursuit speed and a nicer motor than I thought he would.
chris carter and matthews on fresno stood out for me. havent really benn impressed by wyoming players though unrein and prosinski have had plays
Matthews hasn't done much for me, he picks his way through the defensive secondary, against better competition he will get jacked up imho. Fletcher is doing real well, they have to double him or cut him on passing plays.
yeah matthews isnt in the cj spiller class but he could be a decent 6th round pick up. still not crazy bout fletcher. similar to matthews to me. maybe a 7th round flyer but not starting material
Disagree, he sets the edge well, and is consistently double teamed so generating a pass rush is a bit of a problem at the moment. Great game though, very entertaining
players i'll watch in rutgers ucf rutgers fb jack corcoran wr tim brown lot anthony davis rot kebvin haslam de george johnson ilb ryan d' imperio de john freeny lb antonio lowery cb devin mccourrty central florida de jarvis geathers de bruce miller lb corey hogue dt terrell troup qb brett hodges
do you see him as a future NFL starter? i dont under any circumstances. at best he might be a backup but my bet is he is out of the league in 3 years. just see him gettin g blown away by NFL quality. dont see him doing enough against inferior college talent
As a SOLB? Sure, set the edge, jam Te's, rush the passer occasionally. Sure, I could see him doing that, for such a lanky player he has good leverage, and he has a high motor. Plus he already plays on special teams 6'6 270, Sparano has said he is looking for big guys to do that job, he would fit the bill. Be interesting to see if he has any invitations to the Shrine, Senior, or Tx v Nation all star games.
thats what vcrs are for need to save some football for after midnight so i dont have to watch a half hour special on sham wow!
really? top 32 in the nfl? just dont see it. you could be right but i think there are better prospects this year and only about three per year will become starters
Guess who just stuffed Matthews at the goaline on 4th and goaline at the 1? Mr. Fletcher, he has a nice base, but could get stronger, and he also sheds well, haven't really seen the passrushing skill, or lack thereof as WY has played mostly base defense and he has been double team. He is a 5th or later round pick but he does look like a decent prospect, imho he would stick if he can play Special Teams.
Fletcher with the final sack to end the game, he looked tired though. They were even lining him up at NT on passing downs.
II COULD SEE him as a late round pick. You never know how he takes to weight training. Liked the DEs ( Johnson and Freeny) for Rutgers and the DT Troup for Central Florida
one thing i learned about you padre is when you say you like a defensive lineman they end up getting sacks. Hope you like merling and langford tomorrow
Imho, Randy Starks will have a big game today, people forget he was a Titan, and he is getting hot at the right time. Merling? He's vanished Adamp, seriously, the only time I notice him on the DVR is when there is a running play for a good gain on his side of the Dline. Let me make a prediction, the Dolphins Dline shows up today in a big way.
havent watched merling last two games but he hasnt vanished padre. he's controlling his area and allowing others to make the plays. he's constantly around the ball. i am happy with his production but its not superstar level. he's very blue collar right now but he's more consistent than last year. hopefully next year he can add some moves and add some sacks. still even if he doesnt he'll be solid but if he does he'll be special
I bet the Steelers pick this guy up. He reminds me a lot Aaron Smith, and Pittsburgh always seems to be able to get these guys that fit what they do.
And make him a DE? I could see it, his running mate Unrein is a very similar player and imho one of them will stick somewhere in the NFL.
DeAndre Brown is going to be a very, very interesting prospect in a year. I remember watching him as a freshman and he's so impressive. Good hands and speed at 6'6" and then suffered a nasty leg injury. Good to see him healthy.
Yeah, he has some nice size and speed - would be really nice if we could get him this year. But alas - ugh.
Temple vs. UCLA-EagleBank Bowl December 29, 2009 UCLA Defense #92 DT JR- Brian Price-definately 1st round sleeper maybe #2 DT behind Suh.(pre-combine #15-30) Named to alot of All American Teams #3 S SO- Rahim Moore-led nation is INTs(9) Named to alot of All American Teams #10 OLB RSSO-Akeem Ayers-very athletic OLB(hybrid in the NFL-6'4 w/speed) #1 CB SR-Alterraun Verner-Lockdown corner(mid 3-5 rd prospect) #51 MLB SR-Reggie Carter-had a down year but still the vocal leader on defense(mid 4-6 rd prospect) UCLA Offense-team is still young-no real standout yet #83 WR SO-Nelson Rosario(6'5 with great hands-lots of drops though this season) #82 WR SO-Tyler Embree #23 RB SO-Johnathan Franklin(needs to hold on to the ball) #25 K Kai Forbath-Best PK in the Nation(Grouza Award Winner)
I was not blown away by John Fletcher, Lonyae Miller, or Seyi Ajirotutu. However they all made a handful of plays and certainly warrant 7th round consideration. Fresno State's junior DE Chris Carter looked good but I don't know how a 6-2 230 lb defensive end fits into the Dolphins defense. Ryan Mathews was by far the best prospect on the field. He got injured but showed his toughness by returning to the game. Racked up a ton of yards and 2 touchdowns.
Easley will, IMO, stay a later round prospect...because of his spotty history, only having been elevated in the depth chart after a breakout performance against Pittsburgh. Prior to that he was mostly just a special teams player that would come in on some offensive situations like in the red zone, because of his size. He could be something but I'm not sure you count on him being more than a special teams player, at this point.
I never thought he'd rise much past the 4th given his history and only one real year on the field, but he does have potential. If the regime continues to look for middle round players as wide outs, he may fit into that range.
I think as a guy who has deep ability, with good size, is a little raw but has upside....he's one of those later round guys that holds some interest for me. I suppose the question will be at what point Miami moves away from question marks and deals in contributors?
