It's been used in the past, just not to the extent that the Dolphins use it. The 1948 Steelers used the single-wing offense as a base offense I believe and won games with it, before losing to Philadelphia in the first round of the playoffs I think. The Jets used it a year before the Dolphins did except their ball carrier was Leon Washington.

The reason its not used as a base offense is because of what Bill said; the pounding your franchise signal caller takes. Not all guys are able to withstand the beating, especially guys like Ken Anderson back in the days. They all weren't built like Ronnie Brown is or Tim Tebow is. I think its why people have such concern over Pat White running it. He's not a big guy and I think its the reason why some think that the offense won't be used as much as predicted. It also wasn't used because you're basically putting your franchise player in harms way. The offense is dynamic but is it worth the risk of your players that you are paying a large sum of money into? Most say no, which is why I think its limited when it comes to using it extensively.

    Just my 2 cents though.

EDIT: Here's what I'd love to know though. If Greg Cook had stayed healthy, would Bill Walsh have used the single-wing offense at all with Cook?

yea the Qb thing i understand but if its that potent you find a guy not your starter buy a guy that can beat you both ways and if he gets hurt well its not the starter and would be way easier to replace than a top level Qb.

Agreed. I think that's where the difference is between the situation that was in San Francisco and the present situation in Miami. I also think Bill's words were about making the single-wing offense as the base offense, which it is not in Miami.
