Interesting contrast in styles, Hughes is a great speed rusher with a nice balance, Chick is more of a leverage player who uses his 6'5 frame and long arms to shock and shed his blocker. John Chick's signing bonus upon leaving the CFL was second only to Cam Wake's bonus in 2009, around 800k.
That's funny There were several people who really liked Hughes on draft day and I thought it would be a good discussion concerning Hughes and Chick, one a #1 pick, the other a CFLer who washed out in his first try at making an NFL roster but now is giving Jerry Hughes a real battle for playing time.
Yeah I was one of those guys that wanted Hughes on draft day....I'll admit it....hey though like Polian said though takes a while to get some experience in the NFL, wonder what happens in 3 yrs??
In 3yrs? How much longer do you suppose Manning remains uninjured and playing at a high level FY? One of the benefits of finding gems from the CFL is they are sorta JUCO professional football players, their learning curve is shorter and they can contribute faster than the avg draft pick. For comparison say Hughes played 45 games at TCU, Chick will have the same 45 games at South Dakota state plus another 60 or so in the CFL which polishes off the rough edges a bit.
Oh I agree Pads, I just mean closing the gap, I dont think Hughes will bust out, but one never knows.... and Manning yeah he will be effective until the day he retires....and with his release most likely uninjuried....I got to give it to him Pads, he is a special special player.....if Favre can be effective, sure as sheet Manning can too....
I don't see John Chick keeping Hughes on the bench forever, Dwight Freeney is getting a bit long in the tooth and is a tad injury prone, Hughes makes sense as a hedge against Freeney winding up in the body shop. Hard to tell FY, but the colts do have all of their eggs in the Manning basket.
Chick is a good player, he played up here in my home town for the Riders so I got to see a bit of him. However I don't see Hughes staying behind for too long he just needs more time. You never know though, remember we have a former CFL DPOY in Wake and he turned out pretty good so far.
peyton manning is the only QB I will consider in the discussion on who's the best ever with Dan Marino of course.
Alright Adamp, you and Conu were Jerry Hughes guys, I liked him but thought maybe he was similar to what we already had, if John Chick plays ahead of him, do you think he is just to raw at the moment?
yeah probably. I thought he was an ideal WOLB in a 3-4 style like Lebeau uses. Thought he was a bit small for our style of 3-4. He's not that tall so he'll have to make up for it with his speed in a 4-3. He probably needs to work on strength at this stage. Give him a year in the weight room
