I never said he did. Are you guys actually reading my posts? The question here is the degree of difference between Jeff Ireland and Bill Parcells. We have a track record of Ireland having different player preferences than Parcells. You guys are caught up in some sort of bizarre implication of Ireland having final say when it has zero, zilch, nada to do with this conversation.
You said and I quote: Jones made those draft picks. Jeff in his capacity in Dallas could only make recommendations. If you meant to say he suggested to Jones or recommended, then that's where your intent was taken wrong by me anyway and perhaps Pete too.
Sigh. You’re getting caught up in final authority nonsense when it was never the point. Fin-O questioned how different Jeff Ireland is from Bill Parcells in terms of player identification and acquisition. The entire point of bringing up Ware and Newman is to point out examples where Ireland had clear and obvious disagreements with Bill Parcells about which player to draft, thus showing that Ireland is actually different from Parcells when it comes to personnel. It doesn’t matter who was responsible for making the pick and turning in the card. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with this conversation. It only matters that Jeff Ireland wanted Player A, and Bill Parcells wanted Player B. Thus, we have a record of Jeff Ireland making his own independent decisions on players completely apart and separate from Bill Parcells’ decisions on players. This is why I question whether you’re reading my posts, because you’re totally missing the point of why we’re talking about Dallas in the first place.
Same here, to me adding more pieces to the Defense would not be the end of the world, maybe it would put us on a Wanny/JJ path, but even then 9 to 11 win seasons were at least enjoyable. Pity there are no Troy P type safeties in this draft class as that would be a great piece to add..alas..Costanzo will be the choice..the paisan rule.
He stated that Ireland talked Jerry into going with his guy (Newman). Also if anyone is a "poor mans Chris Long" Ill pass on him.
Did you see many Rams games last season? Chris is becoming a very good player. He and James Laurinaitis look like the heart and soul of that defense to me.
Yes I did, and he improved. But I dont think we are going to see him in any Pro Bowls anytime soon. But JL is becoming a top teir ILB in this league.
Screw Bill Parcells. The teams taking risk at the top of the draft are the teams winning in today's NFL.
I dont disagree with that but in this case if Chris Long plays at a high level then his pedigree and draft status wont let him go snubbed imo. I do follow the Rams because I really like the direction they are going in and they love Ohio State LB's (3 and 2 start) I think they get a DT who can penetrate and watch out.
I dont know what constitutes as a risk, but IMO the past decade the best drafting teams have been Baltimore and Green Bay. I dont know a great deal about their philosophy although I think Ozzie perfers BPA? Not sure.
Took C Long some time to adjust to the NFL though. I do think pro bowls matter in the sense that a player SHOULD make a couple of them even if voted in by their peers and not the fans as what guys do on the field is no secret around the league even if it is a secret among fans. Like Cam Wake making it this past season.
By the way, I’m apparently not the only one who heard Parcells say that he avoided Matt Ryan because of cost. Ben Volin did as well.
I certainly would hope that cost would be considered when drafting. If you miss on a $60M player you're at a big disadvantage for a long time.
Did he say that the cost made him higher rated, or just made him a more likely option? If you're asking whether Joe Flacco for $60M is better than Chad Henne for $6M, then I'll take Chad Henne. I think Chad Henne isn't any good, but I would cut him, eat the money, and use that $54M in savings elsewhere.
The general notion was that quarterbacks are risky, so better to avoid losing $60 million if you have a choice. Basically, they just didn’t want to be on the hook for someone else’s money if Matt Ryan didn’t work out. That tells me they don’t have a lot of faith in their quarterback evaluations, as a side note.
Palmer isn’t available, Orton is a garbage time fantasy football stat monster but a real life failure, and Vince Young is a crazy person.
Gosh, you mean vet Qbs' are not typically just given away unless they are scratch and dent products? Say it ain't so Des, say it ain't so! Point being, things will never be perfect it is the Coaches job to adjust to them not do nothing and not just exclude such options because they are not perfect options that is one of the issues with 'take yet another Olinemen with a #1 pick" line of thinking.
You’re missing my point: none of the veterans are worth it. It’s not that they’re imperfect, it’s that we stand zero chance of winning anything with those guys. If we’re thinking about winning long-term, then we have to draft a quarterback.
I like Thiggy far more than most do, I acknowledge it, I just think a Qb who is unafraid to throw the ball down the field and can run if needed is what is needed at this point in time if we do not go Qb in the draft early, I think Thiggy and Marshall did what 90% of the offense wanted to do most of the season in the Patriots game, namely go off script and create plays down the field.
