I'm doing updates from all the NFL preseason camps on a semi regular basis in the NFL Forum. Here's a little tidbit I posted today

Spikes gets nod over McKenzie. With Gary Guyton missing his second full day of practice, one thing that has stood out is rookie Brandon Spikes getting the nod with the top unit over second-year Tyrone McKenzie at inside linebacker. This would not appear to be an indictment of McKenzie, but rather the poise and development of Spikes shining through. He continued to be the most aggressive member of the defense, working through blocks on his blitzes and batting down a pass in full-team work. In one-on-one pass rush drills, Spikes steamrolled guard Rich Ohrnberger, knocking Ohrnberger on his backside.

Yeah, I've been keeping up too. Appreciate it. This is what I just wrote at another site about Spikes.

"I really felt he was the most physical inside linebacker in the draft. He was a lot more physical than Rolando McClain, who I also liked. Spikes has good instincts, as Belichick notes, and even though he's stiff in coverage, he makes plays on the ball. He just has a nose for it. I really liked him coming out. I know I raised some eyebrows when I put him over McClain in my top 25 board but its just the way I felt."

Nice call on Spikes. I had some reservations about him.

McClain has been tearing it up in Oakland too as well as Jacoby Ford :shifty: And my boy Greg Hardy is looking good too! So far its a helluva evaluation year for me. We'll see what happens when some actual preseason games start.

    lol..uh huh

Wait until they start hitting him and you'll be reading about him running out of bounds at his own 16 yard line

dude he's tearing it up. I just watched a video of his in camp and he looks possessed. Still early but the signs are that he's going to have a very good year in san fran

 you're lucky we got nolan carroll with that pick. If it had been Rashad Jones I wouldve been ragging you all year long if he haas a good year. I just happen to like Nolan Carroll so much that I think its a fair trade between the two even if Ginn has a good year finally. Sorry Alen and now back to our regularly scheduled programming

Hey Alen. What do you think of Jermaine Cunningham? He's been looking just as good as Spikes apparently

    http://www.patsfans.com/ian/blog/2010/08/04/training-camp-what-weve-learned-jermaine-cunningham/

While Spikes has played fairly well so far, it’s been Cunningham who’s been getting the attention recently. The transition from defensive end to outside linebacker in New England’s system seems to be going smoothly, and he’s made quite an impression while working with the first team defense.

By all accounts should he continue to improve, it’s looking more and more like he appears to be poised to earn a starting spot at that position with just a little over a month to go before the start of the season. When asked on Tuesday if he felt like a3-4 outside linebacker yet, Cunningham said he’s just focused on getting better.

I wasn't too big of a fan of him. He has some tools but I thought they took him a bit early.

what surprised me is he has apparently looked good dropping back. I thought he would struggle with that

I read that headline and instantly thought Belichick had tried and failed at some Indiana Jones type stunt. Misleading headline! :shifty:

But seriously, I also liked Brandon Spikes despite his slow time, and thought he would have been perfect as a middle round pick. Leave it to Belichick to basically recreate the Florida Gators in the NFL, though.

As history has shown many times before, you can throw out the measurables when it comes to some LBs .

Instinct ,intelligence and heart can be just as important as physical attributes.

In Dolphin history we have had three LBs who didnt wow you with their measurables but who were great LBs.

    Buonoconti-----Intelligence
    Offerdahl------Instincts
    Zach Thomas......Heart.

Of course one word cannot define them but that what you first think of when you hear their names.

On The other hand you have Vernon Gholston who has all the physical attributes you would want in a LB but not much of the intangible qualities mentioned above.

IMO Spikes is going to be succesful under BB.
