Rex won something? News to me.

Sparano could boast winning the AFC East title at least. I suppose he must have had the greatest roster in the history of the world, or does that accomplishment prove he's a great coach too?

How do you determine where the Steel Curtain ended? Serious question. After Greene and Lambert retired? The Steelers did a pretty good job of retooling on the fly throughout the Steel Curtain years, as I recall.

Four playoff games in two years in case you didn't know. Who gives two ****s whether you get there as division champion or wildcard. We were embarrassed and outmatched in our one playoff appearance.

Well if you're not up to date you'll see that winning 4 playoff games in 2 years is "nothing." I'd love some nothing down in Miami please. But they had Revis so it doesn't count. Because great CBs singlehandedly win for teams. It's why Deion Sanders won all those Super Bowls in Atlanta.... oh wait. But Revis is different. I mean the minute he went to Tampa they started winning big time... I mean that's what happened there right?

No they don't give a Trophy for winning percentage - you are correct. Unless you win the super-bowl, which Rex did not do, he is just like the other 31 teams who lost that year. It doesn't matter, because no one keeps track of losers except obviously some people on this board.

Rex Ryan had little to do with the 09 team in particular and made little to no changes in the 10 team. The 09 team was built by Mangini. Rex just rode the wave. It is no coincidence that once Rex started making changes that his team, especially on the defensive side of the ball has been ranked in the 20's where it has slowly declined over the last 4 years.

You asked me to define better job. Statistically(which is all we got) except for someone's opinion, the Dolphins have posted better defensive and offensive league ranks then the Jets during the years Rex has been a coach. Better ranks that have got other coaches fired, and people want to bring Ryan here, defies logic

Not sure why people want to make excuses? We could make excuses for Sparano and Philbin and Cameron and Wannstedt, and Bowles and and and . The guy has failed. There is no statistical measurable improvement in the form of wins that anyone can point to statistically. If anything it is just the opposite, Rex Ryan Jets teams are in decline mode. If we made the super-bowl by a means other then wins I would be more inclined to dig my heels in and argue semantics. Not sure what the point of the exercise is? To show someone is the smartist because they can look up and post micro stats. All it is is a excuse to justify mediocrity.

I actually don't think Rex is a bad coach, I wouldn't even hate it if we hired him, he would be entertaining if nothing else. But I do find it hilarious that there is probably a higher percentage of Dolphin fans willing to defend him than Jets fans. And every excuse you manufacture to explain his poor record and results of late can be used for our own coaching staff as well. And there are plenty of examples of bad coaches having good seasons too, do Tony Sparano and Dave Wannstedt ring any bells?

If I were you I would just say "I think he could do a good job with our roster" and leave it at that. But if you want to belabor the point and go to bat for the guy that is 3-11, and probably about to go to 3-13, then by all means...

Rex Ryan doesn't make personnel decisions. Your entire argument is invalid and pointless to the discussion.

That wasn't directed at you obviously, it was directed at the people willing to go round and round in circles to defend Rex.

Them: well but Rex has a bad roster/GM/QB
    Me: so does Philbin
them: well Rex has actually won something
    me: so did Sparano
    then: Rex won playoff games
    me: so did Wannstedt
them: well those guys were obviously bad coaches, look at how they ran their teams into the dirt
    me: so did Rex
them: well but Rex had a bad roster/GM/QB
    Me: so does Philbin...

I put the end date at their '79 SB season b/c immediately after that they had a couple down defensive years, followed by a couple good ones, and then back to more down ones. Since the Steel Curtain represented outstanding defensive play, I figured the cutoff date should occur when their consistently great play ceased and the player personnel was amidst transition and a decline in age.

yeah but two of those playoff wins were only against Peyton Manning & Tom Brady in back to back games, so those should be taken with a grain of salt amIright.

Philbin does NOT have a bad roster. GTHO here.

Sparano won a division when the Pats had no Brady and the Jets & Bills sucked, and because Henning and David Lee were able to use the fleeting Wildcat as a bandaid.

Wannstedt couldn't win more than 2 playoff games in 11 years and couldn't win more than 1 in 4 years with a good Miami roster, let alone 4 in back to back seasons.

So only coaches who have won the Super Bowl can be good? I'm not tracking here. If we can't get Harbaugh then who out there actually has a playoff winning track record like Rex Ryan? What did Wanny win that one playoff game where he ran Lamar Smith 40 times?

Imagine what Rex Ryan would have done with that 2002 Dolphins defense. I'm not thinking 3rd place finish in the AFC East, that's for sure.

I just really can't see how you're comparing a random AFC East title followed by an embarrassing wild card round exit to two consecutive AFC title game appearances. I also think it's pretty obvious to anyone that this year's Dolphins roster is MUCH more talented than what the Jets are dealing with.

1st round picks on defense every single year, you're saying Rex didn't have a large say in that?

You make some good points but on the whole I disagree. Rex did a good job those first two seasons, he's a good defensive coach, though I think he's pretty average as a HC. For me it comes down to would he be a fit for us and the answer is hell no imho.

Rex came to a 10 win team that had just fired their coach, it wasn't the 1-15 team Sparano inherited or the 6-10 squad Philbin began with. In addition to Revis Rex had Cromartie, Jenkins, Harris, Scott, Pace, Ellis, etc on D. Plus one of the best OL in the game, three quality backs, Keller, Edwards, Holmes, and two dynamic returners in Smith and Washington. A team built to play his style of football.

We arent that type of football team and it would take at least 2-3 years to change gears, by which time Rex would be known as the hapless coach we should never have hired, bc fans don't have the patience to wait while a team is rebuilt.

Philbin went 7-9 in 2012 with a team with as mush if not less talent than Rex has this year.

IMO, there should be little doubt to the objective observer that given some good pieces to work with, Rex Ryan is a coach more than capable of taking a team to the playoffs.

They took offensive 1st rounders in Sanchez, and they year before Ryan arrived, they took Dustin Keller. So it wasn't every single year.

Youre right, my bad. They also roof Gholston before he arrived. Still, you can't say they haven't been drafting specifically for Ryan. Ireland otoh was never really on the same page as Philbin and they're now playing catch at several positions, OL, LB, WR, specifically.

No doubt. But he needs the right pieces. Physical OL and backs, big DL, press corners. You're talking about a 2-3 year rebuild. Why not bring in a coach who can work with the guys we already have with a slight upgrade here and there?

I thought we had an 8.5 win roster before the season, but that was with Hickey's touches. I said that before the season and I feel its still true today. We did have a god awful roster in 2012 and a half horrendous roster in 2013 however.

We have more offensive weapons this year than they had then, not to mention a better QB. He had good defensive players but Revis might have been the only one that was "elite."

Theyre OL was better than anything Philbin has had, it was on par with the OL Sparano had in 09. That made guys like Jones, Green and Washington very effective. Which took pressure off Sanchez and made their play action game a real threat. Edwards was a good RZ target, Keller was the safety valve, Holmes the big play guy.

Revis gets the headlines and he deserves them but Jenkins was the key at NT. Dude was a monster till he tore his knee up.

Those Jets teams were really talented. That's not to deny Ryan his due but he was not out there making miracles happen he was wreaking havoc with a talented roster especially suited to his style of play.
