If Brian Billick has any intention of returning to coaching? He worked with Mike Nolan before and he does have a pretty good resume. Ofcourse he wouldnt be my first choice but not a horrible alternative I dont think.
We just had one of the worst offenses in the franchise history and you want Billick brought in ? OMFG Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. His offenses were, to say the least, OFFENSIVE !
I just love all these guys that are deemed "experts"..and "geniuses" at one thing...then SUCK at that one thing. I remember when Sparano was hired, everybody was excited about how our O-line was gonna be great now that we have a O-line specialist at HC. How is that going now? They added ONE DUDE...and used the #1 overall to get him...LOL. Our second best O-lineman is a Wanny guy...that says it all.
#1 example of this? Marvin Lewis who somehow has kept his job this long while fielding some very average to subpar defenses......funny how many jobs Ray Lewis and Ed Reed have gotten for coordinators.
I'd be down with Billick. I'll probably get shot down like a few months ago but yeah, there's a guy who knows offense but also knew where his bread and butter was. He adjusted in game to get that long TD pass (Stokely?) thrown in the Super Bowl. At least he knows how to play with the cards he's dealt. He's got as good a shot as anyone else and his personality would be a breath of fresh air for a change. Just no more drill sargeants or rah rah guys, please.
How or why he didnt go for that 4th and short vs THAT defense is beyond me, worked out for us but thanks for the reminder of his stupidity.
How about Mike Martz? If anything he may be able to work with Henne's skillset. He's gotta be willing to come back. I'd give it a go.
I have been thinking about Mike Martz as our Head coach alot recently. We could probably retain Mike Nolan as our DC and promote him to Assistant HC so he can't get plucked from us as easily by another team. Martz has beeen my favorite OC in the NFL for years now. He could do with Ronnie Brown what he did for Matt Forte this year as Ronnie's hands are just as soft. Martz would also give up GM powers for another HC gig, this I am sure of. I'm liking this idea.
Guys, I know we're all tossing names out there for potential replacements for Sparano, even though he hasn't been fired...or at least not yet, but after sleeping on this, I've come to the conclusion guys that it's not the head coach so much as it is the coordinators and the staff they bring in. Some head coaches are great because of their coordinators. As much as I love "The Don", it wasn't "The Don" that made Dan Marino great, it was OC Gary Stevens and is wasn't "The Don" whose defenses sucked, it was DC Tom Olividatti. When Brian Bellick was the HC of Balitmore, it wasn't him that made their defense fearsome, it was DC Marvin Lewis...and it hasn't been until recently that Balitmore's offense has gaiined some measure of respect until Cam Cameron became their OC. Now, what am I getting at? It's your OC's and your DC's that make your offenses and defenses what they are...and wanting to bring in "this name" or "that name" as a new Head Coach is really irrelevant if your OC's and DC's aren't worth a damn. Look at Buddy Ryan...probably considered a joke of a HC, but look at what he did as a DC in Chicago and in Houston. Buddy Ryan was what he was...a DC, nothing more. So what am I trying to say? Hmmmm, lemme once again put things in military terminology that makes sense to me. As a Platoon Sergeant, my job was MUCH easier when I had squad leaders who were good and knew what they were doing with their assigned soldiers. If they didn't (and I had a few), my platoon suffered as my attention was too focused elsewhere instead of balanced with all of the platoon. Same concept with a Head Coach. If his Coordinators are good and know what they're doing, life for a HC is good and the team benefits from competent subordinate leadership. If his coordinators are sub-par, it doesn't matter who your HC, the TEAM is going to suffer. Not that our team needs to be re-built, and while I do think for the most part we have some good raw talent, our team needs to be revamped fromt he bottom up. We have good raw talent...the bottom's in place, now we need to look at the leadership that has the most direct influence on the players themselves.
I agree to some extent, but a HC makes a world of difference. Some of these names that are getting thrown out were not good HC because they had to rely on OCs and DCs. So if they had great coordinators, then they "appeared" to be good, but when the coordinators fail *cough cough Henning cough cough* the HC fails. But good and great coaches overcome the shortcomings of their coordinators.
