Yep, I agree, but it's not like there's nothing going on in this area. In fact, there's a lot of work that's been done and is currently ongoing at NASA with regards to aviation safety. I know because I'm a part of it. I am currently developing 3D visualization software for use by pilots. There's also a group down the hall from my office that works on air traffic management. The issue is that the FAA, rightly so, goes through a lot to make sure things are right, failsafe, etc. before approving and implementing it. So, it takes quite a while before something goes from research (as done at NASA) to commercial/government development and implementation. Interesting article though.
