With the Pete Carmichael Jr. news, I think all signs are pointing towards John Beck being very much in the team's plans for the future.

When you look at Pete Carmichael's history, offensive influences, and the quarterbacks he has worked with in the past, you can easily draw a conclusion that this hiring is to benefit John Beck.

Pete's offensive influences from a coaching stand point are Sean Payton's offensive system, Cam Cameron's offensive system, and Gary Crowton's offensive system from his college days as Louisiana Tech's quarterbacks coach when Gary was the offensive coordinator and the head coach from 1995-1998.

The quarterback that John Beck is most often compared to? Drew Brees, who plays for Carmichael and Payton in New Orleans. Pete Carmichael has been with Drew Brees since 2002. I think part of the thought process with hiring Pete Carmichael Jr is the idea that he can bring a similar system as the one in New Orleans that has made Drew Brees so successful over the past two years to Miami. Considering that Beck and Brees are very similar, the coaching staff and management possibly think that this system will allow John Beck to take off.

I mentioned that Pete coached with Gary Crowton at Louisiana Tech. The coach at BYU that recruited John Beck to BYU was Gary Crowton. John spent his first two seasons at BYU playing in Gary's offense.

Then you take into account the Cam Cameron influence. Cam coached with Pete in San Diego and wanted him in Miami as the OC. I think if Pete had accepted the job, he would have been completely on board with the idea that John Beck is the future of the team at the quarterback position.

I really believe that when you take everything into account, all the signs are pointing towards John Beck being this team's starting quarterback now and in the near future. I think Pete Carmichael Jr is being hired not only because Tony Sparano is familiar with him, but also because he can build a system around John Beck. I think we are going to see a multiple offensive system in Miami that has a lot of influences from three different systems, and I think John Beck is going to be the focal point of that system much like Drew Brees is in New Orleans.

I like the Pete Carmichael addition to the staff. I think he gives the staff a young guy who is hungry to make his mark as an offensive coordinator.

Great post and good logic. I like Beck's potential. One thing that struck me is his accuracy; he does a great job hitting the receivers in stride. He is also a gym rat.

However, he is anything but a sure bet and everyone would agree with that. Plus the roster is light on quarterbacks. I expect the Dolphins to draft another quarterback, perhaps as high as the second round with a Flacco or maybe even a Henne.

Quarterbacks take the longest to mature and having a couple of young ones developing while the roster is being shaped over the next couple of years makes sense. As the roster takes shape by, say, 2010, the young quarterbacks' development will be well on the way.

The last thing this team needs is to have built up a roster by 2010, THEN stat developing young quarterbacks. Since the final outcome on Beck is unclear, I would hope the Dolphins also develop a contingency plan.

Even if Beck becomes a top drawer qb, having a second qb would be a great asset.

This is a good recent article about John Beck's approach to the offseason. It basically talks about how he is "working his butt off" and falling back on his gym rat persona, which I think is a quality that will endear him to the new regime.

    http://www.thefreelibrary.com/Beck+breaks+through.-a0155891375

This is a good article as well. This one has Gary Crowton talking about Beck before BYU played Oregon in a bowl game during Beck's senior season. I bring this article up because of the Crowton/Carmichael connection.

Good thinking there KB. Certainly would be positive for Beck. Before you brought this point up, I was about 75% certain that Beck would be holding a clipboard. Now I probably have to drop that to 50/50. I'm sure there will be further revisions up and down as the offseason progresses:lol: What an interesting offseason huh?

1st: The 1st game beck was put in in the regular season i saw something I had not seen since marino left. I saw a QB make a pass over coverage and hit one of our receivers in stride. The only thing I don't like is his footwork and his age. He looks scared out there (and with our line i know why). He was pulling out of the center too early a few times which cause fumbles too. He has to calm down. I think he'll be a good qb one day.

Next wouldnt it be nice to see brohm fall to 32 :)

The thing is, I don't think we should spend anything above a fourth rounder for a QB. We have too many pressing needs. Especially on the defensive side of the ball.

Saw that you just posted this on the Sentinel. A number of excellent points. People keep talking about Beck not being a "Parcells' guy". IMHO it is the exact opposite.

I think Miami might draft a quarterback, but I don't think it will be high. I think Miami will reserve their high draft picks for the defensive front seven and perhaps the offensive line.

The quarterback that I believe Miami will ultimately have their eye on is Matt Flynn from LSU.

I say that for a few reasons. First, I think the Dolphins will like Flynn's size overall and the fact that they will probably be able to get him in the 6th round of this draft. Second, it will not surprise me to see Miami take a quarterback that comes from a spread out type of offense that understands the passing game well. LSU's offensive coordinator is Gary Crowton. There is that name again.

I will say that it will not surprise me to see Miami wait and sign a #3 quarterback as a rookie free agent though. That's what Dallas did with Tony Romo. Sean Payton was the guy in Dallas that screamed bloody murder for Dallas to draft Romo, and they didn't do it. I think it is very possible that Pete Carmichael Jr will have a lot of say in this matter, not in the sense that he will make the pick but in the sense that he will be a strong voice of suggestion.

Another note on Beck and his character - in the most recent edition of Dolphin Digest, Andy Cohen shares a story that happened in the locker room after the Bengals game:

"The locker room was rapidly clearing out. Jason Taylor was standing alone by his cubicle when Beck approached. "I'm going to work hard in the offseason." Beck told Taylor. "I'm not going to let you down."

I hope Beck has the goods to be a good player because this is an example of the leadership this team needs.

there are some small school QBs that I'd look at besides Flacco, Josh Johnson of San Diego and Ricky Santos of New Hampshire.

2 other late round QBs to look at are TC Ostrander of Stanford and Paul Smith of Tulsa.

and KB I was just busting your chops since you didn't like a lot of the things early on in the Parcells house clean

KB...has Carmichael agreed to the job yet? Also....I watched Colt Brennan yesterday...and its very plain to see that he needs some work...but I also see some things I like...like his release, its Marino like. I have read alot of post senior bowl recap's that now predict Brennan falling to rounds 5-7. Do you agree...and if thats the case....what do you think about Miami taking him and working with him for a few years?

Simon and CK are higher on Brennan than I am. I think he has a lot of issues to overcome. First of all is his size. At 6'2", 185 lbs, he will be crunched in the NFL. The second is his release. While it is very quick, it is side armed, and at 6'2", a side armed release will really hurt him in the NFL.

According to Ethan Skolnick, Carmichael wants the job and all that we are waiting on is for New Orleans to release his contract and for him to sign a contract with Miami.

He had a nice career at BYU....we might as well give him a little more of a chance...at worst, he and Lemon can always be the backups if we end up going with someone else.

Can he be coached? I guess he isnt tall enough to get away with the side armed release like Dan did.

God do I miss watching Dan Marion lace it up. I mean seriously...not just as a Phin fan...but watching him in the pocket...was like watching Jordan...or Tiger. It was a thing of beauty.

I think Parcells will really have to be sold on Beck for us not to draft some competition. I like Flynn alot. He certainly has the grit that would impress Parcells so it makes sense on that level. He could be had with our 6th I'm thinking. Morelli would be another possibility at that spot (although if you think Ainge is erratic, he makes Ainge look like Montana) Bernard Morris a guy that intrigues me round 7 or FA. Physical beast but raw, raw raw.

I think we'll spend a higher pick than 6th on a QB, even if Bill has high hopes for Beck. It certainly isnt a sure thing that he can adjust. Maybe they stay away from rd 1, but Henne and Flacco are going to be very tempting for Parcells. When you consider the reports that we were all over Flacco during the Senior Bowl week, the plan that may develop is that lets get Beck up to speed this year and groom Flacco long term (two to three years). No way Flacco is ready to start his rookie season and probably not season two with all the work he would require. Keep Green for insurance, hopefully Beck develops and in two or three years, if all works out you trade either Flacco or Beck for a 1st hopefully. If they both show promise that is

Don't know if any one read this article by McShay, but it might explain some of Brennan's struggles yesterday.

"Martz has apparently attempted to mold Woodson, Hawaii's Colt Brennan (Hawaii) and Tennessee's Erik Ainge into proper fits for his system in only a four-day period. In doing so, Martz has tinkered with their footwork on drops and timing as passers.

Martz's system, which features many deep timing routes, emphasizes delivery quickness and accuracy when throwing blindly to a spot from its quarterbacks, while de-emphasizing the velocity of throws. For example, a typical comeback route runs 18 yards back to 15 yards, with the quarterback throwing to a spot one or two yards in front of the receivers' break.

Martz, on the other hand, likes 22-yard comebacks routes with the quarterback releasing the ball four yards in front of the receivers' break. No one can question the effectiveness of his system in the NFL, but it is a system that definitely takes more than four days of practice to master."

This is great news about Carmichael. It makes sense, given how early we hired David Lee (before even Sparano) that Parcells and Ireland both felt Beck needed a lot of work but that he was the frontrunner in their plans for next year.

i think none of this bodes good or bad for beck as our future. They probably want a Qb coach in place early to see if Beck can be the answer, everything else is just pure guesswork. Last year many assumed that Terry shea meant we were drafting Quinn, then the logic was that maybe Quinn was not that good because Shea knew so much. Doesn't seem like Parcells cared much for Shea's opinion since he got canned with everyone else.
I actually see us drafting another Qb, not early and bringing in a vet as a backup. Beck has done nothing to this point to dismiss even drafting another QB.

I think bringing in both Carmichael and Lee has absolutely nothing to do Beck being anything more then another competitor for the QB position.

Carmichael and Lee connections to the Parcell tree is more meaningfull then who he coached in the past.

Carmichael really isn't connected to Tuna though. He was with the Chargers, then took a promotion to go coach with Payton. That's his only connection to Tuna

Beck has also done nothing to this point that warrants throwing him out with the trash.

What he has done though is show that he has very good anticipation, accuracy, and decision making ability, and that's despite the conditions he was asked to play in. Once again, as a rookie, Beck only threw 3 interceptions in 107 pass attempts. That's an interception every 36 pass attempts.

Carmichael is connected in an indirect way.

Gary Crowton was Tom Coughlin's quarterbacks coach at Boston College. Pete Carmichael Jr was Crowton's quarterbacks coach at Louisiana Tech.

Also, Pete Carmichael Sr was an assistant for Tom Coughlin in Jacksonville.

Add to that the fact that Jr coached with Tony Sparano in 2000 while in Cleveland and 2001 while in Washington, and you have a direct connection.
