http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/25248595/agents-take-afc-players-at-a-crossroads [h=2]Miami Dolphins[/h]Cameron Wake, DE: The three-time All-Pro, at 33, may need to duplicate his 2014 season in which he had 11.5 sacks to keep from being a luxury instead of a necessity next year. The Dolphins have a league-high $157.99 million in 2016 salary cap commitments. Wake is counting at $9.8 million on the cap next year with an $8.4 million salary. We knew that was coming. It will be interesting to see how it all breaks down at the end of the season.
Really think he is going to have a great season playing next to Suh. Should be the first time in his career he isn't fighting the majority of the double teams. And yeah, He Had Better RETIRE as a career Dolphin!
Wake is very good, but he's not Dan Marino special in that he needs to retire as a Dolphin. I think the future of this team will depend a great deal on how the front office deals with the DE position in the next few years, specifically with an aging Wake. We all hope Fede can step up.. maybe Vernon is worth paying big money to, maybe not (I'm actually a bit afraid the FO will make a mistake here and give him big money only because he'll look extra good with Suh and Wake).. but we are going to need to find a replacement for Wake either next year or the year after. So if he takes on a nice home-team discount like Jason Taylor gave us at the end of his career, then by all means keep him, but if he doesn't .. so be it. Building a strong team is more important than keeping Wake if it comes to that.
I don't see Wake as a luxury. I see him as a valuable asset to this team. We need to resign him soon.
TBH, if we do not make a playoff run, I'd be melancholy to see him go somewhere that does make playoff runs.
I want wake on this team is a prime example of a player who takes care of his body and puts it in all for football. I have read several times he hasn't had a drink or burger since like high school / early college. I want him in the locker room obviously he has to play well and the money be right but I want our players to see what a player who takes complete care of himself for the sport looks like. I will admit we are getting more players like that in Landry's work ethic, Suh etc.. but in my opinion Wake probably is most dedicated in the health aspect.
The problem is that you are relying on someone that will be 34 in 2016. I'm not sure how wise that would be.
At 32, Wake was the highest rated pass rusher in a 4-3 defense, who now how protection in Suh. And as CKp pointed out in another thread, 2016 might be our best chance to make a run at a SB. I see Wake finishing his contract in Miami at worst. At best, he re-signs ala Jason Taylor w/a smaller deal.
