i guess this is good since he hasnt shown any run back ability so far. I wonder who will fill the slots?!
Think of it this way, when one is a part time player you either do that part time job perfectly, or they will hire someone else ASAP. That is the theme for this year, do not fall in love with the bottom of the roster guys because Irish is looking for reasons to move guys out and bring guys in to take their place.
Do we really have anyone better? At least he didn't fumble the ball. Remember the Bess one in the 2nd Jets game that let them right back in it. We tend to do that a lot.
Well, this is what could have happened: Smith was no great shakes, and he kept Carroll inactive on game days, after two bland games from Benny Sapp they may have decided to waive Smith, activate Carroll and push Sapp into a lesser role on Defense. THAT is classic Sparano/Ireland, if you are a bottom of the roster guy, they will squeeze you or find someone who can perform in your place. Subtracted- A Rb/Kr who could not be used as a running back. Added a Cb/Kr who can contribute on defense They saw Carroll getting maybe 10 more snaps than Smith per game so they made the move.
I honestly think they are doing this constant roster churning, at least in part, to mess with the players' heads.
Stupid moves both really didn't get a chance. No running lanes at all for Smith. Who's in at TE now? I don't get it. Why can't Ireland sit on his hands for a bit or go scout college football. Why do I get a feeling that Nalbone will be the Dolphin's version of Bonifacio.
Poppycock. If they really wanted to mess with the players' heads they'd post optical illusions around the facility.
I don't think Teddy would have the balls to let a little girl know she skipped ahead of him in the line to he carousel.
As i said two weeks ago, there was a reason Smith was cut by 2 teams. I thought Carroll looked good, give him a shot.
Imho you are right, but it is only among the bottom say 7 guys, the role players. This forces them to really concentrate on learning their part time jobs or they know they will be gone, they might be gone anyway..they just don't know. Exactly what it was like in 08.
OMG, another player cut, what is this regime doing! THis is madness! Didn't we get enough of badmouthing the regime during preseason. The guy was completely mediocre. why are we spending time on this when we need to focus all our mental hatred towards JT and the JesTs. (notice you can't spell Jets without JT?, now that's a conspiracy)
agreed. 1st he sees a quality Bills special teams.... and then he gets very little opportunity against Minne. FO should know he's not going to bust one every game. Teddy didn't bust one every game, but the games when he did, it had a significant impact.
And they cut him just before we go against the team Teddy ran back two against. This was the game I really wanted to see Smith play in. Oh well I guess, Quentin Moses and Lex Hilliard, or the guy who take Clifton's place are more important.
Highly disappointed that Smith didn’t work out, but cutting him makes sense: Nolan Carroll shouldn’t be inactive for a guy who’s not returning very many balls. Put Carroll on kicks and punts, let him be the dime CB.
roster flexibility, in the end smith couldnt do enough jobs to warrant his spot, it makes sense to give this KR back to Carroll, he showed lot more speed on the returns than smith has
Absolutely correct, and I suspect he will land somewhere else and do well. However, think back to cut down day and the shock, outrage, anger et al being flung at Ireland and Sparano. And how did that turn out? That is why I may disagree with this move, but I also know sometimes, Sparano is just flat out smarter than this dude with a keyboard chatting on the internet. Up in club I posted a thread about Ronnie B ragging on Clifton Smith about "you've been here long enough, you have to take one to the house" and how Smith had better heed that warning, said with a smile, from someone who had been here for the last 3yrs. Sparano does not mess around, Ronnie B was telling Smith that, but Smith did not "get it" and now he is g-o-n-e. Sparano tells people exactly what he is going to do if one knows how to listen to what he is saying, when he said "we need to block better for this guy" Finfans were like "yep" What he actually was saying was "he is not good enough to create something on his own right now"
One of the things you constantly here Coach Sparano talking about is roster flexibility. Bringing Nolan Carrol as kick/punt returner and DB gives the flexibility they like. Besides I thought Carrol showed some promise in the preseason. The dude has wheels.
He wasn't any good, had no speed, no explosion, and did this little weird hop jump into the hole, which actually made me laugh once. We are really hurting in an area that is traditionally important in any good teams success.. Hope our true rookie can step up and fill a hole, he didn't flash much in the preseason, returning kicks or playing corner.
Nolan Carrol will just be active and return kicks. Thats what makes sense to me. Probably have Bess return punts which is horrible. I thought it was funny Cam returning kicks for Vikes and he looked pretty good
Well, in his defense, our blocking on ST has never really been worth a damn this year, or last, or the year before. Interesting though that this will at least give Carrol a chance to get in on some defensive action, and KR's if thats what we choose to do. Hope we arent planning on relying on Cobbs and Bess as our returners, theyre just... very lackluster.
Clifton looks to me like he needs more time to get his head back into it. He is to soon removed from being one of the best in the league so the injuries have to have messed with his mind.
I actually think Sapp has been pretty decent. Much better than the nickel/dime play last year at this time.
Does anyone else think this is the craziest roster churning they have ever seen in any team? I know teams do that through the season - but I've never seen so many post final cut early season moves in memory. Just wild. And, going with two TEs seems risky - unless they have a lineman ready to go in as a TE.
08 was much like this from Beck to Kershaw, Ireland was running them in and out the door, heck Tuesday workouts are stay on the roster bloodsport.
Talk about not giving the guy a chance.... jeez. Devin Hester in his prime return days probably does nothing with the pathetic job our blockers do. Don't forget about Ginn's two kick returns for touchdowns last season, especially the second one. Really poor blocking even when he broke. We probably have the worst special teams unit in football when it comes to blocking, and it's been that way since Westhoff's departure. I hope every team squib kicks on kickoffs and shanks punts against us. I have no desire at all to watch Patrick Cobbs and Davone Best in the return game. Both are below average and neither has the ability to ever break one. Been there, done that, and it wasn't pretty.... hope there's a backup plan. Marlon Moore is the only player on this roster that I'd even give a shot. Basically.... we should have kept Ted Ginn.
