Saw the first one in person. Thigpen made a comment on the finsiders that he naturally likes to go east/west but the staff was on him/other returners to go north/south , so he has made a point to do that.
I wonder if Philbin would keep a specialist on the roster .Mathews could make it as a WR and returner although I prefer Thigpen in that role.
If he can contribute at WR as well as RB and KR, then maybe he stays. Thing is, we aren;t thin at slot receiver. We're stacked.
Thigpen can also play the Slot Wr and Rb, he offers a lot more flexibility then Matthews..but who knows? This upcoming game is make or break for Thigpen imo, he had good momentum coming out the Panthers game, if he keeps it up he will force Philbin's hand.
Not really, keep in mind they tried DBess in the slot, and have traded him out to play on the outside. Here is how I see Thigpen's path to the roster: Philbin has said Rizzi will have a lot of say on who makes the roster, if one looks at Thigpen you see a guy who can do 5 jobs, and offers big play ability and he works for cheap. If the staff sees a guy who can do all of those things, offer to flip the field, and the ability to mop up hidden yards and he is a proven Vet (albeit in the CFL) then he makes the team. Figure: -Bush starts at Rb -DT spells Bush as the closer -Miller is used like the Giants used Ware when they had 2 1k rushers, maybe 5-7 carries per gm. If Thigpen can stick in the slot, he will offer more value to the gameday roster then Matthews.
Well, I compare him to Brian Westbrook or Leon Washington, but each was maybe 10 pds heavier then he currently is. I believe in what I'd call the "Rabbi" factor, meaning the Organization, in this care Ireland, has an interest in seeing one of these fmr CFLers making the squad as it burnishes reputations. That and Ireland did try to claim Stefan Logan when the Steelers cut him. INOW, Thigpen may have a Rabbi in Ireland.
Yessir, the knock on Hester coming out was his lack of explosive speed. No, I'm not making that up. Just noticed he also played Slotback, which is a sort of Slot Wr position in the CFL. Hmm, caught 48 passes in two years, not great, not terrible.
Only need 1 Rabbi Mr C, not several priests. I checked Hesters draft scout stuff and he is at 4.36/4.41, which makes me clearly wrong, but I'm certain I read that..oh well.
Interesting thing Philbin said there were 6 plays of 16 yds or more vs the Panthers, that is his cutoff for explosive plays. Thigpen had one of them. this is the sort of thing that he can offer us on offense.
Not even close to true. He may not have the greatest top end speed. But he may be the most explosive player in the NFL.
Thigpen initially was used more as a RB along with being a returner in Hamilton , but as I have mentioned that evolved to what we see here pretty much , trying to get him the ball in space as a slotback player. That imo is how to utilize him properly. He can do quite a few things well and has real value as the primary return guy but he is not work in progress to be on the field other than that. Philbin is smart enough to know this and put him in situations where he and Miami can succeed. Not sure if he is 50/50 to make the final 53 or not but this week will be make that clearer of course. I think he gets touches again.
Well, to me D22, he will have an opportunity to show what he is this Friday, that is all he can ask. One drawback for him is Philbin has mentioned he likes his Slot Wr to have size.
True and true , however Philbin also has pointed out that players come in all shapes and sizes . He has mentioned numerous times about a player that he looks like a football player , part of that as I take it , is from the on field production. If he produces on the field he will live with his size imo.
While good news, I'm a touch surprised as I thought he did not maximize his chances during preseason. My interest level in 2012 just went up, want to see if he gets 2k all purpose yds.
I think the Slaton trade clears the way for him to have a roster spot unless somebody better is available after cuts. He was just alright, I think. Didn't really stand out but didn't **** the bed either.
CFL has nice things going, for example TV ratings are up again, new stadiums, would love to see the Argos make a Cup run. As for Thigpen, suspect he is on a short leash at first..hope he produces, we can use that "X" factor player.
Well Als took it last night..we were coming off of 3 gms in 10 days and the last 2 were on the road so it is no surprise One of my reasons for interest in the 2k yd mark is 3 players topped it in 2011: Darren Sproiles Antonio Brown Ray Rice http://www.footballdb.com/stats.html?mode=A&yr=2011&lg=NFL all 3 teams they played for had really successful seasons.
That Marcus Thigpen guy..he's pretty good Do not know his all purpose yd total, but you can see the talent. Passrushers and Returners can come in from the CFL and play at a high level if given half of a chance, those are not the only positions that can do so either, but they tend to consistently show what they have to offer a club. I'd guess about 1840 yds to go until he hits that 2k yd mark..which keeps me interested in this season anyway
DTrain has a concussion someone will play more, probably Lane but you'd have to think they use Thigpen more often in the offense. BTW that other scrub from that minor league football place up north scored a Td on a pick 6 Jerrell Freeman or something like that..
He'll get some slot snaps this week in practice , he can find space. The TD was a good indication of how he can get from one point to anther quickly, he showed some decent long speed too ... we need better line play , receiver play to take advantage of 22 and him in space imo.
As far as I can tell, Thigpen had all of the return yds today, Bess had two fair catches. So he's up to 287, 1713 to go until 2k Interestingly, Bush is #6 in APY, Thigpen is #7
