No, because he tortured a guy. It is not like the guy just went nuts, he planed the thing out. This guy is a danger to society. Should be locked for the rest of his life.
I think that it's often very difficult to tell the difference between girls aged 13 to 20. This is just b/c make-up, clothes and hair can really mask the girl's age. Now personally I'm in my 40s so the women I'm attracted to are nowhere near the age where I have to be worried about the age of consent. But I worry about what my son may face in his early 20s (he's 9 now).
His actions would suggest that of a violent sociopath. Like you said, you would have popped him in the mouth. That is far different from trying someone up and subjecting them to a mild form of torture. Your reaction is considered normal given the circumstances, his reaction was sadistic. Like others have said, both were wrong.
