Interesting Story in Sports Illustrated http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/andy_staples/02/24/bright/index.html Callahan Bright was a top college recruit in 2005 who basically self destructed. Now he's trying to salvage whats basically his last shot at football. Then Hagen took Bright to the field, where he measured his 10- and 20-yard times as well as his 40-yard dash. Hagen said that while Bright's 40-time (5.25 seconds) won't put him on anyone's draft board, NFL general managers will notice if he repeats his 10-yard split of 1.82 seconds. In agility drills, Bright exploded from his stance, and he cut like a much smaller man. In one drill, he looked like an all-star shortstop as he effortlessly scooped up a tiny soccer ball on the run. That natural ability is the good news, Hagen said. Now for the bad. Because Bright isn't in optimum condition, and because he doesn't have the X and O acumen of the players who spent four years in major college programs, NFL coaches are less likely to take a chance on him. "There's no sympathy for you right now," Hagen told Bright. "You're making a lot of people work really hard right now because of all the things you haven't done right. So, from this day forward, you have to do everything right." Hagen told Bright he must be honest, humble and appreciative if he wants NFL coaches to give him a chance. Hagen believes some team will either late in the draft or with a free agent contract. NFL people simply cannot resist the siren call of a 320-pounder who can move. "These are God-given things," Hagen said. "Can they be improved upon if you're willing to work at it? Hell yes. ... But guys like him aren't just running around free." Dude should hit a CFL evaluation camp around the country Adamp, or the UFL. If he is any good he will make it to a tryout camp next yr.
just someone with natural talent who screwed up big time. 7th rounder or UDFA. CFL could be an option if it doesnt work out for him
He hasn't played football in so long, that is his real problem imho Adamp, he had to get some film on himself that is current. TBH, this may surprise you, but in the CFL they would try him at Tackle. Recall Eddie Blake? He wound up in Toronto at Tackle.
I'm not disagreeing with you here, I'm justt saying that an athletic NT or DT is going to get a look. They may not want to bother with him but they will look
Stories like these are heartbreaking. A good person who made a few mistakes. I have a ton of respect for him for not giving up and working hard to get his chance. I hope he gets an opportunity.
IMO, when a team has extra 6th and 7th round picks, it is worthwhile to take a chance on a guy like this. Last year we signed Louis Ellis who played DL at Shaw. He didn't make it but maybe we'll go that route again.
