Well first off he was a rookie last year. He didn't get heavily involved with the team but that happens. It's not like he was a 1st, 2nd or 3rd round pick so the team feels no pressure to force a guy in as a rookie.

This preseason he was fantastic. He made something good happen just about every time he had an opportunity. He caught all 5 passes that went his way, produced 52 yards on them. There was another pass which was popped up for an interception on a slant pattern but there was a reason for that. The corner got there way too early, bumped Wylie and that's what allowed the corner to get his hand on the ball and tip it up. He was flagged appropriately for the illegal defense.

I watched every punt return and this is why I'm interested, primarily. The Dolphins have shown they do not fully trust Marcus Thigpen on punt returns and I can't say I blame them. I remember him having problems with those last year and I saw more issues this year, he's not an ultra-safe guy for punt returns. He's an exciting guy, could produce a big return at any time, but not safe. Darren Rizzi said they would like to have a committee there but now they can't have one because they've cut all the guys who could do it with him.

Wylie is above all a safe punt returner. He spots the football in the air easily and runs right under it, secures it well, and makes good fair catch decisions. I watched every punt return and most of them were deep in his own territory where you especially have to make good decisions, and where Davone Bess commonly got the nod as opposed to Marcus Thigpen. And oh by the way? He returned 113 yards on 5 punt returns. He had punt returns of 22, 23 and 52 yards this preseason.

As a receiver he's very Brian Hartline-ish in his total strength which is minimal. You bump the guy during the catch and he's probably going down, like Hartline. But if you don't, that's where his incredible agility and acceleration come in. He can get yards after the catch. And he's got true 4.3/4.4 speed too so he can challenge a defense deep. He's just so cat quick it's hard to imagine him not doing damage as a receiver.

It's not just them though. McCluster's presence definitely hurt Wylie the most but in addition Quentin Demps and Knile Davis both had 100+ yard kickoff return touchdowns this preseason. They have an over abundance of return men, which damages his potential value to them. If you strip away returns value then you have kind of an undeveloped Brian Hartline with a little more run after catch ability.

I don't think A.J. Jenkins is any better a receiver to be honest but they probably do.

I thought I read practice reports where Matthews was getting reps back there. I know he did it in college.

Edit: College PRs- 48 for 551 and 2 TDs

From what I've seen of Wylie he always reminds me of Wes Welker, just faster. Little white guy, extremely quick, explodes out of breaks and a heck of a return man. Bess always had the quicks but not the speed- Wylie has both:

    http://www.nfl.com/videos/kansas-city-chiefs/0ap2000000230928/Wylie-big-punt-return

If I had the choice between Wylie and Da'Rick Rogers I'd take Wylie, immediate punt returner who can actually, unlike Davone Bess, make things happen back there, be a weapon. Plus a great candidate for some WR slot work. I'd try to get Rogers on the practice squad and see if he can stop letting his head get in the way of his considerable talent.

I'd consider Wylie an upgrade over Thigpen, and if it came to it I'd pick up Wylie and cut Thigpen loose. Not sure why KC cut Wylie, but I think that it was a mistake- watch the Pats sign him as a natural replacement for Wes Welker.

Never did it in a preseason game, and didn't do it last year. Big leap to just send him in during regular season games when it counts.

Agreed. I'm not impressed by what I've seen of Devlin, I think that he's lucky to still be in the league. Wilson has a heck of an arm and I liked what I saw of him at Arkansas, although I haven't seen him play at all since drafted. But as to the Raiders cutting him- that's to a certain extent neither here nor there to me, the Raiders' personnel move history speaks for itself.

    ps Cobi Hamilton at 2:27- nice speed/acceleration for a guy who's 6-3, 201 lbs:

I'd be willing to bet that you're wrong. :wink2:

He did both over the course of the preseason, pretty sure he did both in just the Bucs game last year actually.

What I do like is there is no one out there that I would give up Rishard Matthews for, so this is all about the fifth and who's can be better than Mcnutt and Tyms.

Just give me Wylie or Zach Rogers..I really thought Rogers was draftable, Rogers has some lance Moore in him big time, Wylie was a fourth.

I was a big Wylie fan at Fresno. He kind of reminds me of the Pats' Julian Edelman.

I'd be interesting in taking a look at him. Haven't seen great indications that his head's in the right place to really make it though.

Pats were awarded four players off waivers today... Dolphins one.. If you follow along with the logic that the higher the waiver priority, the higher % of claims will be successful.. given the fact that the Pats were in the bottom 15% in the priority order, fair to say they put in more claims than us. Not sure what to make of that.

Kind of hard to believe at first glance. I think the more disappointing thing, there is a prevailing point of view (and I agree with it)...there is NE and three other substandard teams in the division. I really expected more at this point from the Fins. Hopefully they will surprise. But I was for more confident before PS started than I am now.

Well, give Cincinnati credit, they've policed up their own important pieces on D going back to the end of last season. Franchised Michael Johnson, re-signed Maualuga (that one was surprising given how bad Maualuga was last year), and they've extended Carlos Dunlap and now Atkins this season. Word is they're also working on extending A.J. Green, but Atkins' contract had to be done first. They're in wait-and-see mode on Andy Dalton, for now, but he's next after Green, depending on what they do with Michael Johnson.

Andy Dalton and that running game are what's going to hold them back. And this year, at least on paper, their schedule is rough.
