a little, but I don't think there's been an overly pressing need for him to gain it. He came into Clemson at about 265 so I don't think he's an inherent tweener. His trunk could stand to gain some thickness IMO.
Eric Fisher looking far and away the best of the tackles so far in these one on ones Would like to see them line him up with Jones
Mayock repeating Alen's sentiment about Fisher looking like Joe Staley. Fisher looks fabulous. I still believe Sylvester would be a nice replacement to Starks should we lose him in FA.
Yeah, I just wonder if he can actually put the weight on and keep it. Moves well but significant concerns about weight. Wish I could watch what's going on. Sylvester's tape is underwhelming. Kawann Short is a better player IMO.
Fisher is beasting it. Mirroring everyone. Great feet (riding 7 technique ends completely around the QB to the right tackle side in 1 vs 1 drills). Quick, coordinated hands. Is playing with confidence like he knows he owns it out there. True, Sylvester has had some tape that underwhelms but he's also displayed some ability and quickness off the snap that jumps out at me. I'd like to know how much of Dalton's 286 weight is due to not trying hard to gain it b/c his trunk looks like it could hold more weight.
Re: Sylvester - He does indeed have quickness. It's just everything else that sometimes looks blah. Re: Dalton - Perhaps.
WTF did the Raiders staff get the gig? Would have loved to seen our staff coaching one of the squads.
Fisher looking like Staley is one of the most obvious comparisons of any two players ever IMO. Fisher may turn out better and likely be taken higher. Staley went about 27th IIRC.
Markus Wheaton impressed in 1 vs 1s. Looked crisp and sharp. DBs had trouble staying with him. Can catch away from his body. His 8.5 inch hands don't bother me. Kenjon Barner displaying some nice vision, balance, and burst in 11 vs 11. Runs stronger than his 188 weigh in would suggest IMO.
Don't they usually offer it up to the teams in order of the draft - earliest pick to latest? I think teams can pass, if they wish, but not sure why they would. My guess is Oakland (and Detroit I think) accepted before it got to Miami.
Guess I need to actually go to the practices to see enough. NFL Network's coverage is just too limited.
Most interesting comment IMO: "SMU defensive end Margus Hunt (6-8, 277) is an absolute beast. Not only does he have great measurements, but he carries the weight extremely well. He is very built with a strong core and no flab. Hunt generated some murmurs when he was on stage."
I got a subtle feeling that Markus Wheaton was uncomfortable with the physicality of these practices. He clearly got mugged on that one play by I think it might've been Desmond Trufant, but unlike Charles Davis I did not feel Wheaton really fought back physically. Those two are of a size, there's no inherent advantages there or reasons one should be more physical than the other. Then later on an end-around Wheaton seemed physically dominated toward the end of it, goes to the ground and fumbles the ball. I thought I remembered on another end-around his looking like he might've been a little intimidated by someone physical that was tracking him. Something to keep an eye on. With a guy like that with his size and speed, that's what you have to watch for is how physical he is.
It used to be the two highest finishing non playoff teams were offered it first, then down from there. They may have changed it though. Sparano's staff coached the South in 2010, coming off a 7-9 season.
The one that really stood out to me amongst the receivers was Marquise Goodwin. Everyone knows this guy is fast. But what I saw was some hands get up on him and he came out the other side in position to still use that quickness to create a bunch of separation, even though the guy covering him did not make any big technique mistakes. And the play against Jamar Taylor was ridiculous. Taylor was not near aggressive enough but he thought he "had" Goodwin and discovered to his misfortune that he wasn't even close. It had to be eye opening for Taylor, who should run in the mid to high 4.4's. That's what I like, guys who think they're fast, and actually are pretty good athletes, discovering (too late) on a play that they're not even in the same category as the guy they just faced. Goodwin is a guy I'll be going back and re-watching pretty hard because I know his coaches regret not getting him more involved and with the QB situation down in Texas it's not all that surprising they had trouble doing that. Similar to Chris Harper that way.
Just following some more Shane Hallam tweets: - Senior Bowl Executive Director Phil Savage has structured the interviews this year so that all 32 NFL teams will interview each prospect on both the North & South squads at least once. Used to be a free-for-all. - Reiterating yesterday during player arrivals, Dolphins personnel were chatting up Aaron Dobson of Marshall, Denard Robinson of Michigan, and I believe Arthur Brown of Kansas State. Brown has since been scratched from the game due to injury. - Falcons 1st meet after practice: Terrance Williams of Baylor. That'd be a ridiculous receiving corps if they added him to White, Jones, Douglas, Gonzalez. Or, would that spell the end of White's time in Atlanta? - Ziggy Ansah chatted up by Jaguars and Chargers. - Vikings met with Bacarri Rambo, Andre Ellington, and Stepfan Taylor. - Bengals working with Garrett Gilkey after practice.
I didn't see him shy away from physicality during the year, but it should be something to keep an eye on this week considering his wiry frame.
Said it before on Goodwin: He's not just a track star. Has some lateral agility to him that could allow him to surprise people at WR. Most speedsters lack agility.
Yes that's evident on what little I've seen of him. I thought rather the big knock on him was supposed to be ability to track the football in the air and catch it. Also there's a size constraint there, though with his speed it makes you feel a lot better about it. His speed protects him. Still, 5'9" and 180 lbs with smaller than 9 inch hands and 30.5 inch arms...it's as small as you get at that position.
He's definitely more Chris Rainey than Jeff Demps but I'm all for adding that kind of speed to the roster when it comes cheap so I'd be interested to see how far down the board a Marquise Goodwin gets. Between he, Chad Bumphis, Corey Fuller and Jasper Collins, there are some fast guys that teams might start taking looks at in the developmental rounds to try and see if they can work on their problems.
From my novice eyes, it looked like Dobson had a decent day today. Anyone care to share their opinion?
He started off well by really creating a ton of separation on one of the UConn corners (think perhaps it was Gratz). But if you look it had a lot more to do with Gratz being atrocious on the play. Even my wife (a horse gal) said "If that guy was a horse, I would not want to bet on him". After that I didn't feel like Dobson did a very good job at all. He created a little bit of separation deep against Duke Williams (a safety) but Duke recovered and broke up the pass and Dobson was very passive about it. There was at least one other route where he got defended well too. I thought Markus Wheaton generally did well as he got open with his quickness and speed, but there were things that gave me a little bad scent about physicality. I thought Marquise Goodwin was probably the most interesting because his speed was too much to handle for the corner on both routes he ran. I mean Jamar Taylor really thought he was playing it "safe" and keeping Goodwin in front of him, and just discovered you can't even afford to do that because he's just too damn fast. I thought Chris Harper looked interesting but his QBs were scatter shot on his reps so you couldn't see him really finish off the play. Aaron Mellette looked just "ok" but he needs to do something to convince coaches he's more than "just a guy".
And I can't help but shake the feeling that the hype surrounding Mike Glennon is a case of the man with one eye being crowned king in the land of the blind. Except even that doesn't fit because even amongst all these substandard quarterback prospects, he doesn't rank highly with me. I like Nassib better. Hell I like Landry Jones better. I'm not a big fan of Geno Smith but give me Geno all day over Glennon. And Matt Barkley is still the best QB in the class in my eyes. Tyler Wilson should go above Glennon as well. Glennon gets compared to Ryan Mallett. I don't see it. At least Mallett was consistent and productive against SEC defenses. You can't say that about Glennon.
Another guy who looks overrated to me is Margus Hunt. I think he's probably going to be good at the next level at exactly what he was really good at on the college level...blocking kicks. That's his role. You can play him on defense but I'm not sure he'll ever be starter quality. Or maybe I should say a quality starter. I could see him as a rotational guy on defensive line that maybe blocks 2 or 3 kicks for you a year (which would be kind of incredible actually).
In your eyes does Goodwin seem as good vertically and play the ball as well in the air as Jacoby Ford? I haven't paid enough attention to him TBH.
Duke Williams was a good call on bringing up from the Shrine practices to the Senior Bowl and I think you caught some more glimpses of it today. It's his man coverage. That's what jumped out at me about him at the Shrine practices, his ability to line up in man and be really PHYSICAL, use his hands well and cover the hell out of someone that maybe he shouldn't be able to cover from a pure speed standpoint. In that way he'll remind you of Reshad Jones. This guy had 105 tackles this year as a safety, with 3 forced fumbles, so that will remind you even more of Reshad Jones.
Someone will fall in love with Glennon's ability and think they can ditch his inconsistency b/c when he's at his best he looks like a top 10 pick IMO.
Yeah that might actually be a pretty good comparison. I liked Jacoby Ford a lot too. He's been about the pro I expected him to be.
Jacoby looks quite promising when he's actually on the field. IMO he'd be one of the league's top vertical guys had he not been so sidelined by injury.
