Marquess Wilson has been suspended indefinitely from the team from reasons I do not care to speculate on. As more info comes out later down the road if he declares, it might effect his stock to where he falls, and since we have 2 2nd rounders, might be worth the risk.

Dri Archer please. This kid looks like he has Jacoby Ford/Devin Hester speed. Leads the nation in kick returns with a 42.08 avg & 3 TDs. Teams are kicking out of bounds just to keep it away from him. Plus 892 yards rushing, 9.2 avg, and 10 TDs...... and 25 catches for 335 yards, 13.3 avg, and 3 TDs. I like Thigpen, but I'd draft this kid to replace him in a heartbeat if he declares as a redshirt junior.

How about Bowling Green's Chris Jones as a nickel inside pass rusher? 11.5 sacks & 16 TFL (good for a combined 169 total yards lost. wow) as a defensive tackle.
He reminds me a lot of Kyle Williams. Short, squatty, and has good lower body strength for his size. Plays with great leverage, balance, and get off for a DT. He gets under interior linemen and can turn and bend around them.

I wrote about him earlier this year, just wasn't a fan above the shoulders, thought he displayed some red flags in his makeup, saw him meltdown in a game, real bad.

Apparently he walked off the field during some conditioning drills, and was demoted a couple weeks ago for bad practice habits..

Bowling Green is on tonight so we get a chance to see Chris Jones first hand.

That kid is something else. For him as a Freshman to go into Tuscaloosa against, that Nick Saban defense and the crowd- about 4 minutes left in the 1st half, Texas A&M up 20-7. Johnny Football is a heck of a nickname for him, kind of sums him up.

Seriously. And the Freshman WR Mike Evans looks pretty damn good too. He is constantly dragging CBs 3-4 yards on every reception. This Texas A&M team has a lot of potential.

Evans looks like he has some talent, but the Alabama CB has been getting the better of Manziel throwing to Evans in the 2nd half so far. I'm liking Ryan Swope- wheels, quick feet, gets off the line well, tough, good hands. Not great size, but he plays bigger than he is. He's a tough dude- he took a man sized shot to the head a bit earlier, made the catch and shook it off.

What a throw by Manziel after the fumble, good catch by Swope down the right sideline. Manziel is just a flat out winner.

Manziel- he's got a pretty good arm. Not great, but good enough to make him one heck of a dual threat. One of the quickest QBs I've ever seen. Alabama just fumbled, about 9 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. This is one heck of a game, Alabama got lucky when the Aggies kicker just barely missed that 37 yard FG.

I dopn't know where Swope is rated, but from what I've seen I'd be for picking him up un rounds 2-3.

TD pass Manziel to Kennedy- the legend grows. I may not like Alabama, but I respect the hell out of them and their defense. And Manziel is running them ragged.

Swope just made two of the biggest plays a players gonna make in a game of that magnitude.

Gonna have to spend a third to get that guy.

I'd spend a 3rd on Swope, no problem. On top of everything else I like his energy- he plays excited and just seems like a winner. Tough kid with wheels and hands, that's a good combination. I could see him both in the slot and out wide, he's just a good WR and would provide speed outside, quicks in the slot, more of a weapon than Bess.

Nice TD pass from McCarron, we'll see what Johnny football can do now, it's go time. Bama has had its share of luck with the missed FG and that very near sideline INT. I want to see if Manziel can bury Bama here.

What a pick by Everett, and McCarron got crushed on the play before. Go Aggies.

Most of Tannehill's highlight videos had Swope making plays in them.

Just a thought Jim..I wouldn't mind trying to get three players from this draft that could help Tannehill, something like Tyler Eifert, Stephan Taylor, and Ryan Swope from this draft.

Why so low? I looked up Swope online so I could try to factor in his measurables with what I was seeing with my own eyes. He looks bigger to me than he really is- I was thinking 6-2 - 6'3 and he's actually 5"11 3/4 from what I saw. And what I saw I was good across the board imo, plus he did it against Alabama and I'm thinking Milliner, because the other Alabama DB was covering Evans pretty well. That 4th quarter deep ball from Manziel to Swope down the right sideline was nice- pressure situation and against a top defense in Alabama.

To me Swope is impressive off of the LOS with a very nice combo of strength, quickness and speed. On top of that he produces, and to me he just looks like a playmaker, which is something that we obviously need. What don't you like about him that would make you wait until rds 5-6 to take him?

I'd like to see more of DE Damontre Moore from A&M, too.

I'd look at Eifert, but I'd rather see how the investment in Egnew pans out- it's no surprise that coming out of the Mizzou system he'd probably need a bit of time.

    My preference:

Sign Dwayne Bowe as a FA- take the pressure off as far as forcing a high WR pick in the draft.

Look at Dee Milliner, Jonathan Banks and Keenan Allen in the 1st rd, and also any top notch pass rushers that might have slid a bit.

In rds 2-3 the names that come to mind are

    Matt Elam
    Ezekiel Ansah
    Ryan Swope
    Terrance Williams
    Tavon Austin
    Desmond Trufant

that's a nice list there bud, really like Ansah, just a raw player with loads of talent/instincts, master of the swat, Austin is explosive, Swope is complete, Elam's gotta little VD in him in terms of quick twitch..

With 5 picks in the first three rounds we should be able to hit on some easy players..

At this point Eifert is my first round pick...to complete a player not to take seriously for Tannehill..Ridiculous catch radius.

Moore has said he is staying.

I like Eifert quite a bit, but Egnew has a ridiculous catch radius as well, his measurables were through the roof. I'd have to think about that one.

BYU/Idaho is on ESPN now- Idaho getting waxed. But I do get a chance to see more of Ansah. For all the praise that he's been getting of late, what I don't see is a particularly high level of explosiveness. As an example, Aldon Smith- I saw his 1st step as a Mizzou DE and thought "wow." Ansah's 1st step doesn't get a wow from me. Smith is close to the same size as Ansah, maybe 2 inches shorter and 10 lbs. less. Smith was converted by SF to OLB. Could Ansah do the same? My guess is no, although if I recall correctly BYU has had him practice at DE and OLB. Not that it really matters, at 6-6, 270 I'm looking at Ansah strictly as a DE.

Ansah is fast, is really good at lateral pursuit, gets those long arms up to knock down passes and shows some pass rushing ability. But does he look like a great pass rusher? Not yet imo. He's definitely intriguing, and he makes for a great story with his international background, size and speed. On top of the sub 11 second 100 meter dash, apparently he can dunk a basketball with his elbows above the rim. I like this guy, I would draft him, but I would prefer to see some more suddenness, explosion out of him.
It will be interesting to see how Ansah progresses in the NFL- you can see the potential, but he'll have to step it up to be effectvie against NFL caliber OTs.

That being said, I could easily see Ansah developing into a solid DE and a good pass rusher with a penchant for batting down passes, and he's one of the better DEs that I've seen in lateral pursuit, tremendous range and hustle in tracking down ball carriers and making those kind of plays.

I'd have to say that Swope strikes me more as a playmaker and a threat, not just a possession guy- he looked pretty fast to me. There's any number of guys who run a 4.5 or so and never make it. When I watched Swope the game today the first things that I looked for were suddenness and explosion. And from what I saw Swope didn't disappoint- I was pleasantly surprised. The guy can run, he has quicks, he's tough as hell and he can catch. He had over 10 catches and over 100 yards against 'Bama and burned them deep in the clutch- not bad. But at the end of the day, what's important to me is that he showed speed, quickness explosiveness and separation ability. I like the guy, I'd be ok with him in rd 3.

I agree. He has a place in the NFL, but I don't see him being much more than a Bess. Additionally, I don't see us looking at him because we already have Bess.

Austin Collie went in the latter half of the 4th round.
He and Swope have similar size, frame, measurables, ability, and college production IMO.... although I'd probably give Collie the edge.
Collie had 215 catches, 3273 yards, 15.2 avg, and 30 TDs in 3 years (left after junior year).
As a junior he had 106 catches (ranked 3rd in NCAA in 2008), 1538 yards (1st), and 15 TDs (4th).

    Swope as a junior: 89 catches, 1207 yards, 13.6 avg, 11 TDs.
    Swope's career: 225 catches, 2845 yards, 12.6 avg, 21 TDs.

From what I've seen, teams typically don't draft NFL possession style receivers of this mold above the 4th round. Jordan Shipley went in the 3rd, and that was entirely too high for him IMO. Heck, look where Rishard Matthews went (7th round) despite 91 catches, 1364 yards, 8 TDs, and has as much or more athletic/playmaking ability than Swope and with bigger size and possibly better measurables to boot. ATM I'd say he's a 4th rounder but could fall further depending on how each team's individual board looks during the 4th/5th round. To me, he doesn't seem like the kind of player a team will say, "This is a kid we have to have, even if it means overdrafting him in the first half of the 3rd round to get him."........ but I could see him becoming a contributor as a #3/#4 or slot guy.

Jordan Shipley came to mind for me as well. But I was also thinking Jordy Nelson, and I was a bit surprised that Swope isn't taller than his 6-0 or so height. As to Austin Collie, good call there, and Collie has been quite the 4th rd pick, and who knows how much more he would have done if not for the concussions and knee injury.

The bottom line for me is that Swope looks like a fast, explosive playmaker who is also very productive. I've already listed the other traits of his that I like ion other posts, but let me ask you this- if you see him as a 4th rd value based upon his attributes and production, would you bump him a round in value because he's played with Tannehill and they apparently have a good repore on and off the field? Plus he has the experience with Mike Sherman...

You make a good point about Rishard Matthews- my best guess is that if he played at a more prominent football school he would have gone higher than the 7th rd. I could see Swope going anywhere from the late 2nd/early 3rd to the 4th rd, and if he fell to the 5th rd I'd consider him a steal.

Nelson has roughly 3 inches and 17 pounds on Swope, plus better speed. That alone puts him in another class.

TBH, I probably wouldn't bump anyone a round unless I thought they were really special and absolutely couldn't stomach losing them. In Swope's case, I wouldn't do it considering we already have a handful of 4.5'ish receivers who can successfully move the chains. If he were a sub 4.4 guy like 3rd rounder Mike Wallace, then yes I'd draft him in the late 2nd or 3rd without thinking twice about it. Considering he'll be battling Bess, Hartline, and Matthews for playing time, I probably wouldn't start looking at him till the 4th where he begins to represent better value. However, if what we're missing come draft day is a dependable slot/possession receiver then I'd look at him sooner.

He's unfortunately got a combination of 3 things that will likely keep him in the 4th round or later: white, under 6 feet, 4.50+

Nelson certainly has better size, but I'm not so sure that he has better speed. And if we're talking value, Jordy Nelson was a high second round pick. I think that the biggest difference here is that I see Swope as more of a weapon guy than a possession guy as you and Alen do. I could see him playing both in the slot and out wide, and he sure looks like he plays fast to me. Great performance against the tough Alabama defense.

Here's some analysis more in line with what you guys think:

Ryan Swope (WR, Texas A&M): A fearless slot receiver who is not afraid to go over the middle and sacrifice his body to make the tough catch, Ryan Swope is as sure-handed a receiver as there is currently in college football. He will likely go down as the record holder for every major receiving statistical category in Texas A&M football history.

Blessed with terrific hands, Swope also displays precision route-running ability and has a great understanding of the soft spots in zones. He was targeted 15 times in this weekend’s game, coming away with 10 receptions for 81 yards. His average reception came just 5.2 yards past the line of scrimmage, though, and he was only able to pick up 9 yards after significant contact in the game.

A consistent, reliable, durable wideout who possesses terrific hands and elite route-running ability is what NFL teams should be looking for in their next slot receiver. Swope will most likely be taken in the later rounds, but he could be end up being a steal for one NFL club.
    http://predictionmachine.com/nfl-draft-2013-college-prospects-week-8-nfl-rookies-week-7

This one rates him a bit higher:

    http://www.nepatriotsdraft.com/2012...ntial-2013-nfl-draft-target-for-patriots.html

They're just opinions. Personally, I think that Swope does have enough physical skills and intangibles to be a 3rd rd pick, we;ll see what happens.

That's the biggest point in regards to the Dolphins. He wouldn't really provide anything that we don't already have in Bess and company. That is one of the reasons that we almost have to use our 1st or 2nd round picks on a WR that can come in and bring that special talent that doesn't usually last until the 3rd or 4th round.

Thanks for the post. IMHO, he'll most likely need to run a sub 4.5 to get into the 3rd round.

Look at how productive Davone Bess was in college but went undrafted (and he made plenty of plays as well): 293 catches, 3610 yards, 41 TDs in 3 years.

I think Swope could become an eventual upgrade to either Hartline or Bess, but not enough to the point where I'd prioritize him before the 5th round.

The problem was that Bess was really, really slow. He looks faster this year, I still have no idea how he pulled that off. I look at Swope as having speed closer to Hartline and quickness closer to Bess. I'm curious as to how he'll run at the combine- he doesn't look big time fast to me, but he does look fast- and quick.

This site has him at 4.42 on the low end- I'm not sure where they get theor numbers, but it's similar to what they had on Jordy Nelson.

I'm kind of wary of some of this online data, but here is scout.com showing that Swope ran a 4.32 in high school:
    http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=8&c=1&nid=3168190

    And this:

"Speed is always a stated priority for Texas head coach Mack Brown in recruiting. On February 23rd, during the Longhorns' next Junior Day, Texas will get a visit from one of the fastest players in the state, Westlake running back Ryan Swope."
    http://texas.scout.com/a.z?s=110&p=...estedURL=http://texas.scout.com/2/729188.html

I wouldn't exactly bet the ranch on the accuracy of this stuff, but my eyes tell me when I watch Swope play what these online stories are attesting to- Ryan Swope is pretty darned fast.

If you go to 2:10 on this clip you'll see some good wheels, quicks, separation ability and cageiness- the Baylor CB didn't know which way was up by the time Swope was done with him, and the Safety got left in the dust.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT57THwIZwg

I don't know, I just like Swope and I don't think that a 3rd would be a reach on him.

I disagree about Swope being "pretty darn fast". Pretty darn fast IMO is a guy who runs a 4.4 or better. 4.5 guys aren't fast. He has decent acceleration with some sneaky speed, but he's not fast. He'll have to do some serious post season training to get his speed to where it exceeds the "NFL possession receiver" label. But I will say, the kid is a winner and a competitor, and in the long run I'd rather have Swope than Hartline, so I would think heavily about using a 4th or 5th on him if we don't do any damage at WR in FA or rounds 1 & 2.

    How about this:

"You could look at Swope and divine that he never would have been the same player at Texas. A valid argument considering the problems the Longhorns have had developing receivers recently. However, even primarily playing running back in high school, Swope flashed the tools necessary to play wideout: he placed fifth at the 5A State track meet as a junior with a time of 10.7 in the 100-meter dash, caught 44 balls for 982 yards and 11 touchdowns in two years and spent his sophomore season at free safety, covering wide receivers for State Finalist Westlake."

    http://www.dailytexanonline.com/person/ryan-swope

10.7 in the 100 meter dash is pretty fast. So that data is on record, plus I've seen him listed as having run the 40 yard dash in 4.32. On top of that he's referred to as a speed demon and one of the fastest football players in Texas coming out of high school. All that I'm saying is that Swope looks to me as if he is fast- if nothing else, I would think that running a 10.7 in the 100 meters for 5th best in Texas 5A would qualify him as such.

That 4.32 is off by about 10 yards. Half the Clemson receivers "allegedly" run the 40 under 4.35. Those inflated times don't mean anything WADR.
Who knows, perhaps putting on 20 pounds of muscle since HS has possibly made him slower b/c he's not a 4.4 guy. I've seen reports of his fastest time being 4.42 but routinely timing in the 4.5's. Typically players with good NFL speed don't average less than 13 yards per catch for their college career. Those are possession receiver numbers. I understand what you're saying, but he's not a speed demon, and I'd have a hard time believing that quoted statement b/c true speed demons with good athletic ability usually aren't 3 star players with only one D-1 scholarship offer IIRC.

BTW, for what it's worth, Jordy Nelson ran a 10.63 100 meter as a junior in high school, and he's a 4.5 guy. (but with good top end speed and the size to make plays over defenders downfield)

Well, here's Tannehill quoted as saying last year that Swope was his fastest receiver and that he runs a 4.3 40:

"Tannehill added of Swope's athleticism and toughness: β€œHe's our fastest receiver β€” he runs a 4.3 (in the 40-yard dash). He has great hands, and he's not afraid to go up and make a play. He's our inside receiver, and he's not afraid to go over the middle. You put all of those things together, and he's a great receiver.”

I don't know what else to say- Swope looks fast to me when he plays, and the evidence seems to be there that he is indeed fast. Personally I see him as being worth a 3rd rd pick, but that's just my opinion. I do think that he's a well rounded WR and I'd like to see the Dolphins draft him.
