Wes Helms on with Le Batard. Confirms that the shaving cream pie in the face celebration is gone.

Stugotz: "Did you know that Coghlan was doomed the second you shoved that pie in his face?"

What records did Coghlan set last year anyway? You completely missed my point about the ROY award though which was it was meaningless in a discussion like this because winning that award doesn't guarantee future success (which is why I mentioned all of the ROY busts) and winning it has as much to do with the players performance as it does the other rookies in the league. Again if you take Coghlan's good 2009 season and compare it to the 2010 class of rookies in the NL Coghlan wouldn't even get into the top 5, even with his .850 OPS. Coghlan wouldn't even win the award if it was in 2008 either. Just using those 2 years for argument sake, I'm sure you could pick out years in which he would have the best numbers and win it.

The argument was never that Coghlan didn't have success in the bigs, it's that Morrison makes the Marlins better now that he's in the line up instead of Coghlan, which is true based on Morrison's upside/talent and how badly Coghlan has been this year (excluding June). Just getting Coghlan out of the line up makes the Marlins better this year.

As for the last part, in 17 games this month he had an OPS of .504. He was really unleashing hell on those opponents.

You could have done this much more efficiently simply by mentioning two words: Dontrelle Willis.

Dan Le Batard's top ten list of wrong reasons why the Marlins are in the national news:

    10. Perfect game thrown against the Marlins
    9. Tried to sell unsold tickets to that perfect game.
    8. Killer bees in the stadium.
    7. Vuvuzelas cause players to complain about the noise.
    6. The stadium is trying to kill you, according to food inspectors.
    5. Botched the Bobby Valentine hiring.
    4. Hanley Ramirez dogging a play.
    3. Fredi Gonzalez getting fired.
    2. Coghlan's pie injury.
    1. MLB and the players' union forcing the Marlins to actually pay some players.

Can't really disagree with any of this. What a horrid season.

My point for mentioning his ROY award was to show you he has had success in this league, and Morrisson has not. Therefore, I have more faith in Coghlan's ability to put up better numbers down the stretch than Morrisson.

In the last week, Coghlan was heating up. .386 average. Small sample size, but following the Marlins and his career, you could tell Coghlan was going to have a hot month.

Also, he set I believe two records. One was the most hits in a month for a rookie, which was 47. He also was the first rookie to have back-to-back 47+ hit months.

All that, and we still have a chance at the playoffs.

No, we don't. We're not winning the division and we're too far back in the Wild Card race. Too many obstacles.

Yes, we do. 3 games left against the WC leading Giants, 8-2 in our last 10 games, and TD coming up to improve our team. Oh, and 5.5 back in the WC.

We most definitely have a chance.

Don't look at the number of games back; look at the number of teams in front.

I don't see why we can't jump ahead of those teams in the next two months. All of them all struggling except for SF, and we're playing SF.

We're one of those struggling teams too.

I have no faith in this team to put together the sort of long winning streaks necessary to jump ahead of the other teams in the WC race and simultaneously hold that lead until the end of the season. They simply haven't shown the consistency necessary. Beyond that, they also need all of the other teams in the WC race to struggle for extended periods.

Could the Marlins get the WC? Sure. Do I think they will? Nope. Too much needs to go right in a season where everything is going wrong.

It's absolutely possible. if we win 4 out of the next 6, we're in it.

Check your facts. 8-2 in our last 10 games isn't struggling. We're the hottest team in the WC race right now.

My facts are well in order. I just happen to look at the way the team is playing overall this season, not the way they're playing from game to game. In a sport with a 162 game regular season, you need to take the macro view.

I don't think a team that's treading water will win the Wild Card.

If we can get a couple of batters to perform to there career line, we'd be explosive.

We're a team that's hot at the right time. The months of April, May and June do not matter. Right now, Nolasco is coming back to form, Stanton and Sanchez are heating up, Cantu will be replaced, and our bullpen(possibly our rotation, too) will receive an upgrade if we do what is necessary this series. Not to mention Ramirez coming back to form, too.

And Cody being Cody, and LoMo hopefully being what Coghlan should have been. Cantu getting dealt or getting his head out of his ***. Volstad getting his head out of his ***. Bake coming back. Hanley is the biggest though. He's worth 3 less wins by himself compared to his previous 3 year average.

I don't blame you guys for hoping. There are certainly bright spots on the team. Just don't pull a Bozo the Art Clown with the expectations.

lol, never. Keep the main players intact, and try to upgrade by trading unnecessary players.

Damn, imagine how good we would be if Miller and Maybin panned out. Replace Robertson with Miller and Coghlan with Maybin and I guarantee we would be leading the WC race, if not the division.

Meh. Not sure how I feel about this one. Hopefully Cantu was over the hill and this was the time. Can't go wrong with relievers.

In this case, they're reliever prospects.

I think this is a move aimed at 2012.

This is a move aimed at keeping Morrison in the big leagues this season when Coghlan gets back (if?) more than anything IMO.

That might be a part of it.

Evan Reed recorded the most saves in the Rangers' farm system last year, and Omar Poveda is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Both are decent arms and Cantu was a FA. What's more, Cantu has said that his first priority is re-signing with the Marlins this offseason, regardless if he's traded. If he wants to come in and be our Wes Helms next year, I'd be totally down with that.

I don't know about the broadcast you guys watch but up here I watch the games on fsn sports or whatever it is. During game 2 with the Giants Tommy and Rich mentioned that they heard rumors that the Marlins were in talks with Dan's agent regarding a multi-year deal.

I'd love to get him back. We'd essentially get two potentially good relievers for nothing.

Despite reports that Cody Ross is unavailable, the Marlins are instead saying that Ross is available for the right price. The only two untouchable players are Hanley and JJ. Uggla is considered available.

i like the trade. Ohman has a 3.30 era and is a lefty. if this trade means we see less of tankerlsy, it's a humongous win imo.
