So on a different board, one not nearly as good as this, I was debating whether its just my imagination or if its true Wrights stats seem down. Turns out, hes really not having a typical Wright Year...

And yet this season while hes on pace to break the mets single season rbi record and land with 125 (1 upping the previous record of 124), it just doesnt feel like hes coming through at as high a rate as he was pre 2007 with risp and in the 7th inning or later...so I looked it up:

When you talk about "clutch" it is my opinion that these are among the stats people usually are referring to.
    2008:
    Close and Late: 1hr/4rbi/259ba
    w/risp+ 2 out: 2hr/26rbi/263
    bases loaded: 0hr/10rbi/250
    scoring position: 3hr/58rbi/259

    2007:
    Close and Late: 4/15/346
    w/risp+ 2 out: 3hr/19/200
    bases loaded: 0hr/8 rbi/444
    Scoring position: 7/74/310

    2006:
    Close and Late: 3hr/19/348
    w/risp+ 2 out: 4hr/38/358
    bases loaded: 2/19/400
    scoring position: 8hr/91rbi/365

    2005:
    Close and Late: 1/6/239
    w/risp+ 2 out: 1/19/227
    bases loaded: 2hr/21/538
    scoring position: 5hr/69rbi/298ba

Even from 2007 there has been a drop off. While Wright is the least of my concerns, his opportunities have been up this year yet his stats are down. I believe this does have a lot to do with the way his swing has evolved though one could certainly argue it has a lot to do with the way our lineup has changed from prior years when Floyd was consistently ripping it up behind Wright. I would also say its no coincidence that when Beltran had that great 2006 that had a lot to do with Wright's numbers being absolutely dazzling that year.

Also found this which I have believed for months:
Kunz pitches scoreless inning in debut: Eddie Kunz, whose contract was puchased before Sunday's game, made his major league debut in the seventh. He pitched a scoreless inning, making an error but allowing just a bunt single. Kunz is the Mets' closer of choice in Fantasy Week 19 (Aug. 4-10) if Billy Wagner (elbow) cannot go. Consider Kunz a must-add in NL-only leagues immediately and a sleeper for mixed formats at this point. The closer of the future had a 2.79 ERA and 27 saves in Double-A and is an elite relief prospect.

While I agree that you have to pay attention to some of the staff when it comes to 100 pitches...for most..when the guy is still pitching well...I see no harm in letting him go past the number. Manuel has done that in some circumstances...its just such an OVER-RATED criteria.

Billy Wagner stayed in Texas an extra day to visit family and will not have his MRI until Tuesday.

maybe he'll stay there permanently. 7 blown saves in the last 2 + months...would we really miss him? Especially against his ex teams?

Welcome to the Eddie Kunz era!

Niese pitched a great first game at AAA, 7 innings 7 K's for the win with 1 run allowed.

Interesting thought on WFAN today. Make Pedro the closer if Wagner is out. At first I said no, but than I thought, the guy can only go 5 innings, if he becomes a closer he could add years to his career.

    Its a thought.

According to Buster Olney at ESPN.com, the Twins expect to know today whether Livan Hernandez will clear waivers.

If he clears, Olney believes several teams will be interested in signing Hernandez, including the Mets and Rockies.

In a quick post to Baseball Prospectus, Will Carroll says he expects Hernandez to sign with the Mets by mid-week.

Hernandez had been 10–8 in 23 starts for the Twins this season before being designated for assignment last week.

    Pedro has zero experience closing.
Eddie Kunz closed out 2 college WS and did a solid job in the minors.
    Pedro has zero relief experience.
Kunz is one of the leagues best relief prospects.
Pedro can go 5 innings....maybe 6. Thats what a 5th starter does now. And thats all Pedro is right now.
Pedro has also given up 11 or 12 homers in about 50 innings of work this year. We all complain about Heilman so why do we want someone with heilman tendencies closing or relieving?

Kunz, maybe smith, are the only 2 suitable for the job while Wagner is down. Definitely not Pedro.

I did hear a future name to consider as a closer: John Maine. Personally I dont see it, especially when hes a successful and solid starter. Other pitchers like Rich Harden throw a ton of pitches and dont work very deeply in to games but theyre effective when theyre out there and maybe thats just what John Maine is right now.

Billy Wagner has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left forearm, leaving the New York Mets without their All-Star closer as they chase a playoff spot.

It's a major blow to the Mets, even though Wagner has blown seven of 34 save chances. No other New York pitcher has a save this season.

Struggling setup man Aaron Heilman is likely to get the first shot at closing, manager Jerry Manuel said Tuesday. The Mets also recalled right-hander Ruddy Lugo from Triple-A New Orleans.

    OH God, its Heilman

well the bright side is we have been warned so we know to turn off the game after the 8th inning tonight. In addition, this should also be brief and there by only moderately painful with a very anti climactic ending.

Is Heilmann Mayonnaise your new closer? It might not be a bad thing to sit Wags down a while. I thought the Mets should have grabbed Fuentes of the Rockies before the deadline. OK, Luis Castillo....deal. :shifty:

I thought fuentes would have made sense cause wags cant pitch against his ex teams. For that reason alone it would have made sense. I do think Kunz can get it done too if he gets the chance. Using 3 pitchers for 3 outs tonight is silliness.

I do agree that Beltran did not go after that ball right away but 2b Reyes was so damn timid on that ball is was comical. That ball landed about 15ft behind the infield dirt!. Over the past week(and since the season started) I have witnessed some of the WORST fundamental baseball I can ever remember from this team. Baserunning...defense..hitting situations....it seems like they throw conventional baseball wisdom out the door:angry:

He was jogging in on that ball, it was his all the way, he only started to run hard when he saw that Reyes would not catch it. It was an easy catch if he was hustling.

Mets to make run at Garcia
    Posted: Tuesday August 05, 2008 08:30AM ET
Beset by pitching injuries, the Mets are expected to be in the running for veteran right-hander Freddy Garcia if the two-time All-Star holds up well this afternoon in an open workout in Miami. Several teams are scheduled to scout the workout at the University of Miami, including the Mets, as Garcia tries to work his way back to the majors after shoulder surgery. Garcia, who is 6-2 in nine postseason starts, made 11 regular-season starts with the Phillies last year before being shut down. "Freddy is doing great on his rehab," agent Ed Greenberg said yesterday.

So true. It's pathetic the way that can't get a run home from 3rd base with less than 2 outs lately.

Fragile Freddy was a total waste of $12 million for the Phillies. Watch him become a Cy Young winner if he goes to the Mets.

I think one thing we all can agree upon is that minus a 2week period..this team is a .500 club who resembles the same EXACT team with the same EXACT problems with the same EXACT bonehead plays that played under Willie.
I am getting tired of getting angry...it is just starting to turn to frustration..and realization of what this team is.

Why does Manuel keep taking Santana out after the 8th inning? Almost cost you again today but Wright saved your bacon. Glad I have him as my 3B on my fantasy team. He's the only Met's player I root for. :tongue2:

how come we didnt get any bullpen arms before the deadline? did you guys hear that manuel said he'd consider some farm level starters? i dont know if he was joking or not, but im sure at this point he would take anybody that could get a late inning out.

44 games left in the season. I was looking at the Mets and Phillies' schedules....the Mets looks like they have a slightly easier schedule, but looks like we both play a lot of common teams....I like the Phillies ending the season with the Nats. The Marlins could also get back into it if they get on a run, but I don't think they have the pitching to get there. They definitely can hit the long ball and score runs.

    Good luck. :shifty:
