I don't think they will do it, because I would think that Boston would ask for Pinto, or Lindstrom to sweeten the deal, Beinfest is usually stingy on deals.

If they pull it off...it could be the difference between the playoffs for them or not.

And how does any of this make the red sox better this year? It doesnt unless hanley is involved. The Red Sox have a chance to win this year. Thats why theyre not moving him.

At this point I will be surprised if they pick up that 20M option for 09 and 10 though...

right but what else does Florida have that helps the Sox this year?

Yeah, whatever happens with Manny (and I don't think he'll be moved), I seriously doubt those twin $20M options are getting picked up now. Someone will sign him for something like 4 years and $60M, more likely an AL team that will just stick him at DH.

Well, this is why a deal between those teams will not happen. If the Marlins swap Ramirezes, Larry Beinfest should be shot. Young, power-hitting shortstops who haven't even hit their arbitration years are a lot more valuable than old sluggers with attitude problems. Even if Hanley Ramirez sucks defensively, you can live with that because he's a tremendous hitting SS.

Pat's power numbers are actually better than Manny's, but Manny has a higher batting average. Neither one of them is going to win a gold glove in LF though. I don't see the Phils moving an old LF for an even older one. Phils would do better looking at getting another pitcher.....we have plenty of hitting.

Heyman was just on WFAN, its seems our fellow posters are right, the Marlins are going full court after Manny. Phils are not offering much, Dodgers are offering better, but the Marlins have blown them all away, just not sure what it is?

Also said the only deal he sees the Mets doing is David Weathers?????? Been there done that, no thank you!

Said the Mets will not give up the big 4 minor leaguers.

One bullpen option the Mets have kicked around is to try to pry disappointing starter Ian Snell from Pittsburgh with the idea of employing him as a reliever for the remainder of the year. Snell could then be used in the rotation next year when the Mets may need starters. Pedro Martinez likely won't be back and Oliver Perez could leave as a free agent. The Mets are continuing to make left-hander Jon Niese unavailable because they'd like to see him make the rotation next year.

Competing GMs say the Mets' Omar Minaya is "itching'' to do a deal. And it's no wonder with the Yankees stealing the show across town and the competing Marlins close to possibly adding superstar Manny Ramirez. However, a lot of Mets people want to hold onto their top prospects, including outfielder Fernando Martinez, and pitchers Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz and Robert Parnell. Seattle requested "two premium prospects'' for outfielder Raul Ibanez, and Mets people don't like that idea. Minaya is spending more time on the relief situation, which is looking iffy lately, especially with Duaner Sanchez's radar gun readings down.

Buster Olney, Steve Phillips, and Peter Gammons have a 2-3 hour special on all the Trade Deadline moves and make it sound like there were going to be all kinds of deals and then not much happens. I think the whole trade deadline thing is just media hype. Many teams win the World Series by standing pat and not giving away the farm.

Minaya addressed the media, and no mention of a deal. I assume that we've got what we've got at this point.

If its true the Pirates wanted Fernando for Bay and then took that from LA and Boston its no wonder nothing got done....Those kids arent bad but they are far from elite prospects.

It's the downside of not having a lot of good B-prospects in our system. The dropoff from Fernando to everyone else is pretty big, and I think the drop after Kunz and Niese is big, too. I don't blame the Pirates for asking for Fernando; I just don't see a package of something like Evans, Parnell, and Niese being as appealing as what they ultimately got.

I'm not so sure you don't take the Fernando M for Bay trade. Bay is 30 years old and a proven 30 HR 100 RBI guy that hits 280 and is signed and cheap.

We have no idea what this kid can do, he isn't exactly riping up AA.

  22. phunwin

phunwin Happy kids are Dolfans. Luxury Box

Funny how that works. Catchers in their mid to late 30s drop off quickly? Who knew?!?

As a side note, I ripped the Milledge for Church and Schneider deal at the time, partly because I didn't think that even a deteriorated LoDuca could be worse offensively than Schneider, and yet Schneider has been poor, but not embarassing, at the plate, and now that they're teaming him with the wildly underrated Ramon Castro, it's a fairly successful platoon. And Church has produced more in half a season than Milledge has all year.

I think Martinez will be special. I share your concerns about promoting him too fast, but he's got absolutely tremendous potential. Moreover, they haven't even started the clock on arbitration with the kid, meaning they get him for 6 years at cheap prices. With Bay, you get 1 year and 2 months at a reasonable price, and then he's looking at a 6 year, $100M type contract in all likelihood. You can't fill out the lineup with 8 high-paid guys; somewhere in there you have to get cheap production.

I see your point; Bay could have put the Mets over the top, so go get him! (Kind of makes you wish we hadn't traded him for Jason Middlebrook and Steve Reed.) However, at some point, you need to allow the farm system to flourish and let it produce players. I wouldn't have flipped out if we'd traded Martinez for Bay, but I wouldn't endorse it, either.

Ya but Bay put up his stats in Pitt; no guarantee he can duplicate that in NY. Just like you find flaws in Fernando Martinez theres flaws with a guy like Bay as well. Except Martinez has the chance to be a star where as Bay does not....

Actually I think the fact we dont have a lot of good B prospects is a complete misconception of the Mets farm system. There are 4 players hitting over 300 in the Eastern Fall League, widely regarded as a pitchers park. 3 of those guys, Murphy, Evans, and Carp are on the Binghamton Mets. And thats before Fernando has enough AB's to qualify.

Niese has developed a cutter that hes using very effectively and looks like the real deal. His ascent is fairly remarkable as he was considered a fringe prospect at one time and now is widely regarded as having the upside of a #2 pitcher. Kunz is the closer of the future and has had success in big spots already closing out 2 college world series for Oregon State. Parnell is the only one of the group that doesnt really impress me.

From what I have heard and read the Mariners and other teams were asking for 2 of those guys for mediocre players or guys at the end of their contract.

I would take Livan Hernandez as the long man to eat up innings, that's it.

We are going to live or die by our bullpen, and I fear the worse, Heilman is just lost!!!!!!!!!!

As much as I hate to say it..or even think it..this team is starting to resemble the Randolph Mets again. Waiting for the long ball...not advancing runners..bullpen blowups. Man I hope I am wrong but the past few games I got that same frustrating feeling of them NOT doing the little things to win games.:no:

Dan Murphy called up. Starting in LF, looks like his AAA career lasted 1 day lol. Per Adam Rubin, NY Daily News Blog: HOUSTON - Daniel Murphy's Triple-A career lasted one day. The 23-year-old prospect is expected to join the Mets for Saturday night's game against the Astros, the Daily News has learned.

A 13th-round pick in 2006 out of Jacksonville University, Murphy is perhaps the Mets' top minor-league hitter, rivaling teenage phenom Fernando Martinez. He's mostly played third base in his minor-league career, but has also seen action at first base, second base and left field this season.

Not a problem. And for the record I agree. Marlon happens to be a favorite of mine, everyone has a favorite who isnt the best player on his team but you like the player anyway....but hes just not producing in the role hes been successful in, in the past. It happened last time he got a 2 year contract also. Obviously the guy gets complacent.

First off I am sorry to quote myself but hate to repeat it. HOLY COW! Are we kidding ourselves? Where do we begin? The inablity to manufacture any runs? The inability to protect ANY kind of lead? The need to use the entire bullpen just to get 6 outs? Santana should be close to 15 games won..Heilman and Wagner have EASILY cost us about 12 games this year...12!. Who do you see that comes out of that bullpen that you have any confidence will get the job done? Its like watching groundhogs day watching these games.
Someone tell Castro that that play at the plate was a force play..no need for a tag...its not against the law to get a hit with men in scoring position...That the look on Heilmans face only makes people MORE frustrated...that it would not be a cardinal sin that MORE than one guy can get hot at one time. Finally...that a pitcher will not EXLODE if he throws more than 100 pitchers...I SWEAR...I do remember as a kid pitchers did it...I do have witnesses.:pity:

Heilman needs to become the long man and Kunz or whatever his name is needs to be called up now and given a chance as the 8th inning guy or even the closer.

You cannot pitch Wagner against any former team.

    PS

Nice debut by Murphy, he does not look pretty in the field, but he caught everything and has a nice arm.

    Speak and I shall receive!!!

Mets to promote Kunz to help bullpen

The Mets, coming off another bullpen collapse Saturday night, are on the verge of promoting right-hander Eddie Kunz, their top relief prospect, according to major-league sources.

The move comes after right-hander Aaron Heilman gave up a tie-breaking grand slam in Friday's 7-3 loss to the Astros and the bullpen allowed four runs in the final four innings of Saturday's 5-4 loss to Houston in 10 innings.
Kunz, 22, was the Mets' first draft pick in 2007 and 42nd overall. He helped Oregon State win a pair of national championships, first as a setup man, then as a closer.

The Mets, after failing to make a move at the non-waiver deadline, promoted another prospect, infielder-outfielder Daniel Murphy, on Saturday. Murphy started in left field and went 0-for-4 in his major-league debut.

It is not known whom Kunz will replace on the major-league roster

Wagner will have another MRI; Maine lands on DL

Billy Wagner has a strained left forearm and will have his second MRI in two weeks on Tuesday, leaving the New York Mets without their closer and starter John Maine.

The Mets purchased right-hander Eddie Kunz's contract from Double-A Binghamton to fill Maine's roster spot. Manuel said the 22-year-old Kunz might be his closer on Sunday.

Kunz was 1-4 with 27 saves in 44 games with Binghamton. He threw 17 scoreless innings over his last 16 appearances dating to June 20.

Oh testify brother. The official stats: Wagner has blown 4 saves in games Johan has started, and heilman has cost 2 additional wins on top of that and feliciano 1. Thats just wins that the pen blew for Johan. I dont even want to look at the rest of the games because its got to be downright depressing. The only ones I have confidence in are smith and Kunz. I would happily dump our entire bullpen for a roll of two ply and a 40 of old english though right now ill settle for a 12 oz of Sam. Freakin terrible bullpen we have goin on.

I mean, I know relief help in general right now is hard to find, as is pitching of any kind, but this is the same exact crap that cost us the division last year.

The only thing I would disagree on is pitch count as 5 of the last 6 starts the starter has gone more then 100 pitches with pedro's 87 pitch outing in his return being the exception. And at this point we do need to be careful with pedro and pelfrey for different reasons.
