Explaining what happened when Jose Reyes put up a fight when asked to leave Tuesday's game with a hamstring injury, manager Jerry Manuel joked: "I told him next time he does that I'm going to get my blade out and cut him. I'm a gangster. You go gangster on me, I'm going to have to get you. You do that again, I'm going to cut you right on the field."
Manuel has been on the job for less than a week, but that has to be the leader in the clubhouse for managerial Quote of the Year. He was known as a relatively laid back manager while with the White Sox, but has apparently been sharpening his blades and taking gangster lessons since then. Reyes returned to the lineup Wednesday and went 3-for-5 with a steal, three runs and zero incidents of going gangster. Jun. 19 - 9:28 am et

Good road trip, No Willie, Some direction, and some wins!

I like what I see happening, its early but Manuel has put a stamp on the team with some little things (play well and you stay in the lineup, pitcher stays and hands the ball to the reliever). Its little stuff, but seems to be bringing the team together!

Hey, how'd that series work out for ya? Lost 2 of 3 and had 1 good inning in 3 games.

Nice job by the Phils and their 5 game losing streak. Mets only 2 games out....

Let this be a lesson that when Phillies fans try and talk trash, bad things happen. Just like when they dont try and talk trash! :pointlol:

Well 2 in the loss column and 3and 1/2 back. Still...finally they are at least watchable again. Some life in them although they still have some question marks that still haunt them . A healthy Church back will def be a plus. Just try not to have one of thier relapses before the All Star break.

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah....so you caught up a little......by playing a bunch of cupcake teams like the last place Rockies, while the Phillies were playing the first place Red Sox and Angels. :tongue2: Chase, Howard, JRoll, and Pat B will turn things around on the road where they have a winning record.

Has anyone seen the Umpire Runge behind home plate tonight??? When is the league going to do something about the umpiring in baseball? Beltran was questioning a ball strike call and Runge stepped out from behind home plate and was pretending to clean off the plate just so he could get in Beltrans face. Manuel comes out to protect his player and the ump steps in Manuels face and bumps him!..I mean he bumped him...could you imagine if a player had done that? Maybe I am losing my mind over the bad play of the Mets..but I have never seen something like that before. Runge has to serve time for that NO?:tantrum:

I didn't see this but the umps for a couple of years now have been acting like they are bigger than the game or the players. I've seen at least 3 or 4 times just this year where they went after players after they questioned a 3rd strike call. You're absolutely right, MLB should do something about that. Fans don't pay money to see the umps.

Do we really have to wait that long? Now I see why McClendon, Bochy and others have gotten nuts with this kid. From start to start you have no idea what you will get from him. His idea of consistency is being as inconsistent as possible. :tantrum:

I totally agree. And the sick thing was Beltran was walking away and Runge pursued the conflict. Beltran had his head down and you could see his lips moving but it was talking aloud not shouting. Further, youre dealing with a player who NEVER, argues about anything. Players like that, who arent complainers....when they see stuff, and the pitch in question was highly questionable, they are right more often then the constant whiners it seems. Runge is a putz...then again maybe hes just a ticked off mets fan who is upset at our crappy play the last two nights who is ticked that he has to sit around and watch that crap :pity:

It doesn't look like anyone wants to win the NL East. I don't like this Intraleague crap.....it creates a schedule that is never fair, gets too many AL pitchers hurt, and it's just bogus and not they way baseball was meant to be played.

Theyve been playing baseball this way since 1870. Players are just less prepared mentally and less careful in the way they go about things imo.

I dont doubt the Phillies bats; 1-5 with Rollins, Vic, Utley, Howard, Burrell gives them enough hitting to compete. After Hamels however, they have a bunch of guys whose boxscore reads 5 1/3-10 hits-4 ER-2K-4BB. And in a short series, theyre going to get beaten if theyre bats arent red hot.

Wow, way to not come across as a complete weiner. Maybe if you didnt complain over balls and strike calls you wouldnt lead to concentration lapses that cause you to walk 3 batters in the 4th inning of said game. But thats just common sense talking, why should that matter?

Alou doing a rehab game today in the minors.
Andy Phillips sent down for Tony Armas Jr who starts tonight. Schneider and Armas are pretty familiar as they go back to washington together.

Also, looks like Maine had a dead arm last night which is not a good thing.... :(

I assume you're talking about Santana and if so yeah his stock has dropped alittle in my eyes. I always heard that he was a bit of a diva in that he would take himself out of games at 100 pitches, complain about umps/players and was a little soft in certain spots and it looks like that might be a little true.

Its proven to be very true. He complained publicly when Wright made 2 errors in his star against seattle and basically blamed his grand slam he allowed to Hernandez on an error Wright made the play before. I think whats missing from Yohan's vocabulary is a little something called accountability. As in Johan, you threw the pitch that Felix Hernandez hit 380 feet. How exactly is that David's fault? Yes he could have made the play before, but that doesnt mean that the pitch you threw and the oppositions pitcher hit a country mile is somehow his fault.

By the way, I found this interesting, it has supposedly been discussed that Wright move across the diamond to 1B if they feel a certain 3B would be a better fit then any of the 1B available this offseason. Could be interesting since Wright has 12 errors but would undoubtedly be a better defensive player then Delgado.

Actually, that was precisely what I was advocating they do, and go after A-Rod.

??? Arod just resigned a long term extension???? He opted out of the last year of the contract he had signed with Texas, this off season, then he worked a new deal with Yanks in Dec 2007

"The deal is worth $275 million over 10 years, with a reported incentive package that could raise the total value as high as $305 million."

    http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071213&content_id=2324707&vkey=hotstove2007&fext=.jsp

Maybe he meant last offseason and jettison Delgado and move Wrigth to 1B this year! ???

Yeah I also loved Johan's quote about how it was a good pitch that Felix hit out, it was a letter high 92 mph fastball.

And I have heard the Mets talking about moving Wright to 1st. Not sure off the top of my head if there are any available FA 3rd basemans but they could probably get a Joe Crede or Hank Blalock cheap (although they would give Alou company on the DL). Although didn't the Mets just draft a 1st baseman this year? Granted it's probably years away until he'll be ready to play in teh MLB.

They drafted Ike Davis 16th overall but its been said by various scouting services that he may project better to a corner OF spot though personally Id fast track him as he has tremendous pop. He seems to make steady contact. If they did move Wright they better land a stud 3b or its not worth the move.
