They got a shot this year but they have a severe problem with a lack of depth on the bench.

Depth on the bench isnt a problem. Keeping the starters healthy (Delgado, Alou specifically) may be.

Luckily when your staff will be allowing less then 2 runs a game on days your #5 starter doesnt go we wont need much offense.

I think as long as there health does not become a question over a long season...it should be a very exciting year.

Jays just released Reed Johnson, I'd be surprised if he didn't end up in Shea this year. If healthy he's a pretty good player and a nice 4th OFer than hits lefties pretty well if I remember correctly.

We need a righty, can he play first?

He actually bats right handed, he's a career .308 hitter vs. left handed pitching in over 700 at bats (something the Mets need badly). He's never played 1st but can play all 3 OF positions. Again I'll be very surprised if he's not a Met by the end of the week. It makes jsut too much sense for them to sign him and again if he's healthy (a big IF but worth the gamble) he'd be a very useful 4th/5th OFer even when Alou comes back.

OMG did El Duque and Pelfrey just stink the joint out today. El Duque was all over the place with little control and no velocity. While Pelfrey just labors with everything he does. He takes forever to pitch and goes deep into the counts with so many batters. 1-4 is preety solid but 5 is a huge ?

As far as reed johnson goes he cant play 1b. I think he might have been a better option then Pagan before the injury last year but Pagan has played lights out and clearly deserves a spot. And we all know how valuable Chavez is so theres clearly no room for Johnson.

As far as Pelfrey goes, I want to see him speed up the way he works. I noticed this about him last year as well and it does get frustrating to watch because he has the stuff. All good though...John Smoltz started out 0-13. Johan had a 6.51 era in year one. Becoming a good pitcher takes time :)

You noticed the same thing with Pelfrey that I did. He just takes forever..almost laboring, bringing the game to a halt. Wish he would just work faster ..he has good stuff.

Ya his approach is trachsel-esque and thats not good. He definitely has to work faster. His command has gotten better from what I can tell and thats a good thing obviously

He can only hit lefty, and he has been hurt so they could not see what he could do, and he is out of options.

He cant play defense worth a darn. Dont worry though, with our luck he will be the next Melvin Mora.

Much more important that we keep Fernando Tatis whos hit like 110 over the past 5 years because hes Omar's neice's husband or some stuff. Hes related to Omar somehow, I forget exactly. Still a freakin stupid move.

Also it seems as though Duque has won the #5 slot. He pitched very well yesterday with 5 innings of 1 run ball. Had the old delivery back as well. The good news was that Pelfrey pitched 3 scoreless innings. the bad news was that the 4th inning he worked he allowed 3 runs and got the loss. The occassional bad inning is to be expected though I guess. It was a good bounceback from his last performance and even better considering hes not pitched in relief at all except this spring.

Duque was not good, he hit a high of 82 on the gun, and had only two swings and misses against him, he was hit hard but they were right at people.

I would give the spot hands down to Pelfrey, but I think Randolph will give it to Duque, and he will get shelled.

1999? or 2000? He was probably steroided up for his 1 great year and a week. Goodness hes awful. Every year they insist on keeping a player I cant stand out of camp. last year it was David Newhan....next year Im sure they will have someone else :tantrum:

Pelfrey is getting optioned to AAA. He will be back soon enough though.

I tend to agree with you though but the one thing Duque has working for him is that it was his first start with his normal motion so they are probably thinking that by the time he makes his first start around April 12th he should be fine. The other thing about Duque is he normally tops out around 87-88 anyway so he was probably more worried about locating his pitches then velocity. :wink2:

By the way, I dont know if any of you saw the game this past Tuesday, but I saw Angel Pagan and this kid is the real deal. He doesnt have much power but he could easily slap hit his way to 300+ and Gold Glove defense. He made a ridiculous running over the shoulder backhanded grab off of I think Matt Diaz of Atlanta in the 6th inning Tuesday. It was a web gem for certain. With he, Beltran and Endy out there, its going to be very difficult to get any kind of cheap hit against us.

Thats an outstanding job by the team to find a great group of defensive OF's.

I swore I'd avoid criticizing Minaya after the Santana trade, but that was on our old home. I need a ruling as to whether that carries over here.

No worries, he'll be on the shelf before the end of the month anyway.
I haven't seen enough of him, but so far he's been a huge pleasant surprise. I just hope his spring training carries over to the regular season.
    I remember nothing Phil :wink2:

I don't get how you can root for Duh Mets and the Dolphins simultaneously. It's sacrilege to support a Miami team and a northeast team simultaneously.

Go Hanley! Go Jacobs! Go Uggla! Go Hermida! Go Willingham!

Oh, hey, GWB is in the ESPN booth for the Chickens/Gnats game. Nice to see the guy. I'm one of the few left who like him.

There was an article a couple of weeks back about a simulation game (or something like that) that he pitched. It said everyone, coaches... everyone was trying to figure out what was going on because he was pitching so slow. Nothing close to the 84 area.

The fastest he reached was 82, and that was a couple of throws. He cannot drive off that foot.

Last game he had only two swings and misses against him, that is horrible.
