well that didn't last long, Jeff Francoeur has been called back up from the minors. In the 3 games he played at Mississippi he was 7 for 13 so hopefully he figured it out and can have a big second half. http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2008/07/07/francoeur_0708.html
I am rooting for him, bummer, from a weekly league Fantasy standpoint, I had to set my roster before TBvsKC game so he is currently on my bench. Oh, well, I sure hope he found something, regardless!
7 for 13! Hopefully that lit a serious fire under his ***. Even though he was only called up because of injuries... EDIT: Do you agree with the Braves' decision to recall Jeff Francoeur already? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yes 39.82% 1475 No 60.18% 2229 Those are not very favorable numbers from the fans...
McCann cracked two homers tonight. Chipper went 0-4 with 3 Ks, dropping his average to .379. Frenchy went 1-5 with an assist. Jair had another solid outing. We won but its looking like we need to go on a tear if we want to get back in this thing.
A tear is def in order. Jair has piched himself into an All-Star snub. I see we picked up Julian Tavarez who promptly gave up a couple runs in his 1 inning of work last night. I guess with Jeff Bennett going on the DL Wren figures he needs another long man.
Bump* 2 wins in a row heading into the All-Star break fellas. Hopefully this can vault us into a second half playoff race. Anywho I found this on the ESPN boards and figured I'd share. Enjoy. Note the name this D-Bag is sporting. A little homerism every once in a while never hurt anyone I guess.
Those were some nice wins. Frenchy got a big 2 out hit in the first one to drive in some runs. Hopefully that gets him back on track. LOL about that Mets fan. If anyone is overrated its David Wright. I could have about 50 RBIs hitting where he does in that lineup and I can't hit worth a ****. I'd like to see how many opportunities they have both had to drive in runs and then the % in which they succeed. I'm willing to bet Chipper has a higher %. And obviously Chipper leads him in BA, OBP, SLG%, and OPS. So no, Chipper is not overrated. He might still be a bit underrated compared to players like Derek Jeter.
Agreed totally. I got into a debate in the Mets thread the other day regarding D. Wright's defense at 3rd base. Wright won the Gold Glove last year while committing 21 errors. Compare those error totals for Garret Atkins (13 errors) and Chipper (9 errors). I shouldve posted it in the other thread, but I too lazy to find it so here are the fielding stats from last year. You tell me, bias or no? Sortable Fielding: Games Errors Fielding % Pedro Feliz, SF 143 11 .973 Aramis Ramirez, ChC 126 10 .972 Chipper Jones, Atl 126 9 .971 Scott Rolen, StL 112 10 .969 Garrett Atkins, Col 154 13 .963 Jose Bautista, Pit 126 15 .958 Ryan Zimmerman, Was 161 23 .955 David Wright, NYM 159 21 .954 The only thing I can say for Wright is that he played more games. But 21 errors is still an ungodly number for 3B.
Yeah Lucky that deal is dead. Epstein says there was no chance of it ever happening at that it was a pure rumor.
New rumor around the league is that Teixiera will stay put with the Braves 6.5 out. Does this mean they'll attempt to acquire an extra OF stick like Nady or Bay?
I think there is enough yes. But I'm hearing (Buster Olney) that Pitt has reportedly asked for a teams top minor league pitching prospect in return for Nady. Theres little to no chance of the Braves giving that up.
Yeah the Sox love Youkilis, and since he's cheap and under control until 2010 or 2011 it didn't make much sense. Although I love Tex, I wouldn't make that deal either unless I could get him to sign a reasonable deal before the trade was done.
Tex seems to be the only bright spot right now. What a reversal since the start of the season. The injuries dont seem to be slowing down any time soon. I think it may be time to think about moving him and hope for better health/luck next season...
I now know why Jorge Campillo is called "The Mexican Greg Maddux" by his teammates. Best start by a Braves pitcher all year IMO.
the marlins couldnt hit the ball off a tee last night.....the "mexican greg maddux" had us fooled all night, great game....sucks Volstad got no help
I heard Joe Sheenan (sp?) say that the Braves have a positive run differential despite having a losing record. He said once we get healthy look for a run.
440 - 412. We are the Anti-Diamondbacks of a year ago. Soriano and Acosta and Boyer and Gonzalez are all back in the bullpen. Tex is on fire and Kotsay seems to be finding his stroke so I hope this guy is right. If Escobar can get back I like him in the 2 hole. Blanco has been really solid in the leadoff role.
Yeah we have just had crappy luck. I love that bullpen and I'm glad Tex is finally paying off. Hopefully we can combine good pitching with good hitting. We seem to not have been able to do that all year.
Are you guys dealing Tex? I keep reading a lot of rumors of him to the Angels and it doesnt seem like the Angels are giving up too much from the rumors I've read. Kotchman for Tex was one, and Quinlan/Wood for Tex was the other. I'd hate to lose Kotchman but I'd be all over that Quinlan/Wood deal. Any trade for a bat where we dont lose pitching or Kendrick would make me happy.
I keep hearing the rumors too but nothing really solid. Like I said earlier, we have a positive run differential. So its not like we are just a bad team. And we aren't that far out of it. I think we would have to get really, really good value to let Tex go.
The stuff Ive been reading suugests the Braves brass is content to keep him the rest of the season and let him walk in the offseason. They'll take the draft picks in return. Recent history would suggest this is a safe bet. Heres a list I compiled of Scott Boras clients we've let go in the last few years: JD Drew Gary Sheffield Andruw Jones Kevin Millwood (trade) Jason Schmidt (trade) Greg Maddux The Braves had a strict "No Boras Rule" in effect for years. This meant they would not negotiate a contract with Boras during the season. This pissed off alot of players in Atlanta. EDIT: I should probably be more specific about the Boras thing. The Braves actually dont negotiate with anyone during the season, not just Boras clients.
Hey guys, I haven't been in in a while due to computer problems. Do ya'll think Atlanta has a prayer in the race after what we've seen so far? Even with the injuries they've had solid pitching, I honestly didn't think they'd be this bad at producing runs though. Don't think they'll compete at this rate unless they get a lot better at manufacturing runs. The pitching is good enough.
With Chipper getting nicked up here and there I think we are vulnerable offensively. I agree that the pitching is good enough. But we really need to turn on the bats if we are going to have a shot.
Best comeback ever today. Braves scored 9 runs in the 4th and still lost 10-9.....everyone wrote off my Phillies!!!!!
McCann took a shot to the side of the head. Doesn't look too bad. Maybe a slight concusion. To say this team has been bit by the injury bug is beyond an understatement. Just ridiculous.
I just saw the collision with Shane Victorino....hope McCann is ok. They would have to pay me a ton of money to play Catcher....they get abused pretty badly out there.
Injuries have single handedly taken us out of the race. Normally Im more optimistic but I cant see it under these conditions. Makes up for all the years we overachieved and/or had Rico Brogna as our starting 1B and still won the division.
They don't have a prayer. If it's not one thing it's ten others. Before the pitching was the best in the East and they couldn't score runs. Now they score 9 and 10 runs and lose both games. What a load of crap. The injuries are beyond ridiculous.
Heres a pretty good article on Teixiera and the Braves. Its a mailbag from the main site, but talks about the pros and cons of trading/re-signing Tex. Personally, It excites the HELL out of me to know that Hamptons contract is up at the end of the year. The writer touches on it, but how nasty of a staff would Hudson, Jurrjens, and Ben Sheets be? http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/...t_id=3212099&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl
i seem to recall that Sheets is a Southern boy, and grew up a Braves fan, but am entirely too lazy to look it up right now and verify. either way, i would love to see him in Atlanta. i had pretty much taken it as a foregone conclusion that Tex will be in NY next season unfortunately, either as a Met or Yankee.
Sheets is actually from Louisiana. Thats kinda Southern... Southern enough for me to see him in Navy and Scarlet next season
Several roster moves today; Chipper and Tim Hudson, and both were put on the 15 day DL today... JoJo Reyes was optioned to Richmond, Charlie Morton was recalled and will start tonite. also pitcher Jeff Bennett was called up from Myrtle Beach and Catcher Clint Sammons was called up as well. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080728&content_id=3212909&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb
I think Bay would help. He could be what Frenchy should be, which is a solid right handed bat behind McCann. McCann's injury, not to mention Chipper's, is another reason we need a solid bat in a dwindling lineup.
Louisiana is definitely the South, and Braves country too. Sheets would be a fine addition for next season.
So they're looking to buy still? I like their optimism but let's face it, they're out of this race. A trade won't change that. Of course if they're building for next year I guess that's fine.
