It's pretty standard operating procedure for an agent whose client is entering the last year of his contract to see if the team would like to extend/re-do a deal before the final year begins.

I don;t think this is Channing insisting he be paid more in his final year of his current contract.

this is probably as simple as the agent saying "Do you want to do an extension right now? We think he'll fetch $X on the open market next year."

And the Dolphins replying "His production and effort so far aren't worth a commitment of $X to us, so let's see how he performs this year."

From there, there are many possible outcomes:

    1) Channing will play better, we will extend him during the year, and he will revert to be a lacklustre lump of mediocrity on the field.

    2) Channing will play better this year, we will extend him him and he will continue to play well.

    3) Channing will play well this year, we will get into a bidding war at the end of the year and let him go when the price goes too high. He either plays like crud for the other team, or becomes a Pro-Bowler for them. Who cares either way. We don't overpay.

    4) Channing plays well, we get into bidding war and re-sign him, over-paying him. (I don't believe the current FO would do this because a) if we want him, we'd be smart enough to extend him before he tests the market b) we wouldn;t overpay for someone). Channing then reverts to mediocre pay at ultra-top dollar.

    5) Channing will play poorly and we won't re-sign him. He goes elsewhere and is great... or crappy. Again, who cares.

    6) Channing plays poorly, but we extend him during the year because we are stupid. (I doubt this happens.).

    7) Channing plays okay (not well, not poorly) this year. We let him sign elsewhere for big dollars.

I think #3 will happen. He'll be better this year, but we won't over-pay to keep him.

I am terrified of #1, #4 and #6. I'd be happy with #2, but don;t believe it will happen that way.

I don't mind #5 or #7. I don't mind losing him, but DO mind the chance of over-paying him.
