So there's 3 playoff teams in the top 7, and 3 others with a change in HC etc. Based on this list I don't see dead cap space correlating to anything.

That's not true without knowing how whiney their fanbases are.

I think the important thing to keep in mind is that there are a lot of vehicles for dealing with underperforming players. They can range from cutting someone and eating the dead money, to restructuring a contract, to leaving the contract as-is. I'm not sure anyone here has put "dead money" into the proper context among all the options available. Certainly one could prefer to eat dead money of a bad player this season than being obligated to him financially in future seasons. This isn't to say dead money is good or bad.

Honestly though, Our cap situation is incredibly horrendous. All this dead money, so little space left, and so little talent on the shelves. How is it that Ireland is still here. Wow.

You're the one calling me Ireland's mom but I'm the troller. Rigghhhht. :wink2:

Ireland's probably made his share of mistakes as a GM, just as other GMs have made. As a first time GM being groomed into the position, he should be expected to make some during his learning process, but that's why Parcells was here---- to run the show and step in whenever he saw fit (which Parcells stated as such).

What gets annoying to me is the way posters seem to vilify Ireland as if he was the head coach, offensive coordinator, and czar all lumped into one, and in 3+ years of being here, Parcells, Sparano, and Henning had absolutely no responsibility with the team. [just to make their hatred of Ireland seem more validated]

How is this his OWN roster when it wasn't even his OWN head coach & coordinators to begin with? I'm sorry but that makes no sense.

    Excellent point. Thanks.
In our case the dead money is better for our future IMO. I'd like to know how much we would've been on the hook for this year and in the future had we not taken a hit this year.

I'd imagine Ireland is so bad that he'd be the only GM that would have dead cap space when transitioning from the WildFieldCatGoal Offense/3-4 defense to a WCO/4-3 defense.

Brandon Marshall is the 4th highest-paid player on the Dolphins this year. He plays for the Chicago Bears.

Meanwhile the 7th highest-paid player is an assistant coach at Northwestern High School.

The Jets cap page neglected the $465.00 hit for Chad Johnson. Throws the whole thing out of whack.

but if we didn't have all this dead money this year, those same posters would be complaining that Ireland left us with no cap space next year. I've never heard so many fans complaining about their GM maneuvering to put their team into a great cap situation to do some actual damage with. It almost seems like some posters believe 2012 is the last year of football to where the future is insignificant.

......nor should Jeff Ireland be held accountable for how far Sparano, Henning, Bonomengo, and Pasqualoni set this team back, including the players brought in to fit their system & design..... or are you going to blame Ireland for their failures?

That gets into the whole question of why are we letting a GM who has failed to build a quality team clean up his own mess?

That would only hold true if Ireland failed to build a team around a HC & OC that he himself hired. Personally, I find it silly to blame a guy tasked with trying to fit players to a coaching staff/scheme (Henning & Sparano) that was inherently flawed from the get-go.

Now, for the first time Ireland has an opportunity to find players for HIS coaching staff and scheme, the one he seems to prefer, which seems night and day different from the one he was originally tasked with. Parcells essentially tasked Ireland with rounding up the raw materials to build a log cabin, where as now Ireland finally has a chance to build something more modern and exciting.

Well, Jeff Ireland talked his way into another year, and he's hoping the Tannehill pick will buy him another year or two. if you listen between the lines when Ross speaks, I don't get the sense that he is in love with him or anything. I hear a man that would have jettisoned him for Harbaugh, and one who bought the promise of Peyton Manning

But who will you get who is better than Ireland? To replace an average GM, you are shooting for a top 5 guy. Who in their right mind would come to Miami?

We are 4th in the league. See that word AMONG in the OP?

It says we are AMONG THE LEAGUE LEADERS IN DEAD CAP SPACE. Which part of that is untrue?

If reading comprehension is your problem, it explains why you think he's a good GM. Those standings are tricky to understand.

Ireland is inept. He's DONE NOTHING for this team.

I tend to believe Ireland is the big reason some folks want nothing to do with Miami. Ross might play a role, but I think it's mostly Ireland. Just my opinion. Get rid of Ireland, and they'll come.

Well, oddly, they have rosters littered with probowlers. What do we have?

I'll wait. They have on average, 7 probowlers. We'd be very lucky to have 7 wins.

It's not beyond possible for us to have 6 this year with Wake, Long, Pouncey, Sean Smith, Soliai, and Bush.

Cam Wake voluntarily signed an extension, as did Soliai, and Richard Marshall is a hard working, team oriented type of player/leader who was voted Arizona's defensive MVP. He obviously didn't have a problem coming here. Perhaps he liked what Ireland & Philbin stood for and the direction they're looking to go regarding building a hard working, professional team while removing any distractions or players who don't buy into it.

Perhaps non team-oriented players looking for a paycheck might be deterred from coming here, but I didn't realize that's a bad thing.

All I can say is I'd love nothing more for Tannehill to be a success and the rest of the team also picking it up this year and especially next.

Ireland staying for another 4+ years would be the best **** you ever to a lot of people  Players, media, fans..

You expect dead cap space from successful teams who also turnover aging players for younger ones (the Pats are continually doing this so they have dead space from traded players for picks); or when you have a regime change and a significant personnel turnover. But, when you have not been a successful team and continually have dead cap space under the same GM .... that's not a good thing. It means there is a good bit of turnover of players the GM had a hand in selecting or signing and did not pan out. The dead cap space is a JI failure issue.

But, I do agree with slick. I'd love it if the Dolphins young players came through and we succeeded and Ireland stayed on and was successful.

This whole cap mess is the very reason we can't give Jake Long the big bucks he will be commanding.
That and he is oft injured and not playing at the top of his game anymore.
    Gonna' get tough around here.

Well Ireland did give an over weight Carey a 6 year free agent contract worth $42M including a $15M guarantee in 2009. Carey then became an average RT and in 2010 was converted to guard with a restructured contract. I wasn't happy when Carey was re-signed in 2009 because I never thought he was worth the contract he was demanding in free agency. That was on Ireland.

Yes, players get lazy or have personal issues (Brandon Marshall) but that's part of a GMs due diligence. That is a GMs role and responsibilty. We can't absolve him of that. It is why employers do background checks before they hire staff.

I know Ireland is not as bad as some make out to be but he isn't immune to blame either.

This isn't his HC either. This is Mr Ross' HC. Ireland wanted the dude from Denver. From what I read, Ireland guaranteed him the job. Ireland is gone. Book it. And good riddance.

I don't exactly know how, but Ireland somehow convinced Ross that there was plenty of talent on this team and it just wasn't being developed properly. What about this team screams talent?
