As for Miami, the Dolphins allowed 390 points last season under departed coordinator Paul Pasqualoni, the third highest total in the AFC. Nolan figures to bring that number down, just as he did in earlier stints coordinating defenses for the Giants, Redskins, Jets and Ravens.
Dean Pees' job, assuming he lands it, will be a bit more dicey.
Nolan inherited an under-productive group in Denver and greatly improved it and is now inheriting a similarly slipshod unit in Miami with the intention of quickly making it competitive with the Patriots and the Jets. Poor Pees will take over a defense that improved 22 places in defensive ranking in one year under Nolan.
Tough act to follow, but apparently not as tough as staying in Foxboro had become for him.

    It's even worse than that
    our defense allowing 390 points
was the third worse point total allowed
in the past 40 years by a Dolphin Defense

Only 2007 with 437 points allowed
and 1986 with 405 points allowed
have been worse in the past 40 years

The 2009 Top 5 Passing Offenses in the NFL:

    1) Houston Texans
    2) Indianapolis Colts
    3) New England Patriots
    4) New Orleans Saints
    5) San Diego Chargers

We played ALL OF THEM... the Pats twice.

The 2009 Top 5 Rushing Offenses in the NFL:

    1) New York Jets
    2) Tennessee Titans
    3) Carolina Panthers
    4) Miami Dolphins
    5) Baltimore Ravens

We played all of them... except one... because WE were #4.

On top of that, we had the overall most difficult schedule (record-wise) in the NFL this season. We also lost our starting NT, our #1 corner, and our MLB to injured reserve. We also lost our starting RB and QB on offense, putting even more pressure on the defense.

No doubt the defense has to improve, but if you're going to put up stats like that, I think it's only fair to show the big picture, and to keep everything in its proper perspective. No way, no how, was last seasons defense among the worst ever in Miami. I don't care how many points they gave up.

Larry Bates was also supposedly in the mix for the DC position in Buffalo as well.
