I've never seen a single minute of Dr. Who.

Anyone care to tell me what I'm missing? Why the cult following, etc?
    Thanks in advance.

Historically, it has made science fiction accessible to a great many people through great writing, humor and some memorable characters. Also, through its ingenious construct of having a lead character who can regenerate into a different form upon death, it made a long, long, LONG run possible.

Why does he regenerate? He's an alien -- a Time Lord, and that's the means to his non-end.

Bad news for you Doc, Dr. Who will be on BBC America this year and not on SciFi

Five Doctor Who specials finally airing in the U.S., on BBC America

BBC America announced that it will air five Doctor Who specials, including the final four adventures featuring David Tennant as the Doctor, starting in July with "Planet of the Dead."

As part of the same deal, BBC America acquired the 2008 Christmas Special, "The Next Doctor," featuring David Morrissey and Dervla Kirwan. It will air June 27.

In "Planet of the Dead," a London red bus takes a detour to an alien world, forcing the Doctor (Tennant) to work with the extraordinary Lady Christina (Michelle Ryan). But the mysterious planet holds terrifying secrets hidden in the sand and time is running out as the deadly Swarm gets closer.

"Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars" is the second special; it and two as-yet untitled specials will premiere later in 2009 and early 2010.

Doctor Who is part of BBC America's sci-fi-heavy summer, which also includes the urban fantasy series Being Human, starting July 25, and Survivors, which follows the last members of the human race after a deadly virus has wiped out 99 percent of the population.

I had BBC America installed today. First time I ever added a cable channel for one show.

Oh, and June 27 is Mrs. Z's and my anniversary. We're eating a gourmet dinner at home, then settling into "The Next Doctor" and a "Firefly"-on-Blu-Ray marathon.

Primevil has now been cancelled and they are not making any more of this show. . the plot line got far too complex and was losing viewers so. ..

Torchwood is a poor show and does not have the ratings of Dr Who and I really cant stand John Barrowman which ruined it for me. .

Have you heard they are going to do a one of special with ALL 11 Drs?
Obviously the earlier Drs will be added using old footage 'Doctored' if you will pardon the pun. .

David Tennant hasn't heard a thing about it, which makes me believe it's B.S.

    The Waters of Mars"
Written by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford
    Airs Saturday December 19, 9/8c.

David Tennant returns as The Doctor in The Waters Of Mars, the second of four Doctor Who specials to premiere on BBC AMERICA in 2009 and early 2010. He is joined by his cleverest and most strong-minded companion yet, Adelaide, played by acclaimed British actress Lindsay Duncan (Rome, Under the Tuscan Sun). Adelaide is head of the Mars Base and doesn't take kindly to an uninvited appearance by The Doctor. Peter O'Brien (X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Casualty) also guest stars as Ed, Adelaide's second in command. The Waters Of Mars is written by Russell T Davies and Phil Ford, directed by Graeme Harper, and executive produced by Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner.

Not sure I liked it at all. The 10th Doctor came off as rather whiny, and Davies seemed to be throwing a little bit of everything at the screen to see if it would stick. And then there were all the goodbyes, which felt like "Return of the King" redux.

That said, the 11th Doctor looks interesting. I'm kind of getting a Fifth Doctor vibe.

Fox Developing U.S. Version of Torchwood

Fox is developing a U.S. version of the U.K. hit series "Torchwood," according to The Hollywood Reporter. Original series creator Russell Davies is writing the script for the project from BBC Worldwide Productions.

U.K.'s "Torchwood" is a spin-off from the 2005 revival of "Doctor Who" and is about a covert group that investigates and fights alien activity. Two series aired domestically on BBC America as well as last year's stand-alone miniseries, "Children of Earth."

Some of the current cast -- most likely John Barrowman, who plays the immortal Capt. Jack Harkness -- might star if Fox orders "Torchwood" to pilot.

The trade says the U.S. verion will contain a global story line compared to the more localized sensibility of the first two BBC seasons.
