According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the team met on Wednesday with New York Jets coach Al Groh. http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.co...interview-groh-for-defensive-coordinator-job/
It's a tough call - the old dog that knows all the tricks, or the up-and-coming understuday of perhaps the greatest 3-4 Defensive Coordinator of all-time? I think a small part of me hopes that Butler gets it, but I won't be dissapointed with either one.
I think a majority of us are hoping that Butler gets the job. At the least his defense would be very interesting to watch.
Groh was Virginia's coach last season. He was the Jest's coach in 2000. Confusing wording by the King of the Florio's. I personally am hoping Butler gets the job. Look at him as a prospect with a ton of upside, especially after coaching under a mastermind of the 3-4 in Lebeau.
Oh Groh! Eh, prefer a younger guy as I'm not sure Groh was all that good to begin with, Groh has been called "the Jets Sparano" from back in 1999, but he never really had much success in NY. Besides, if we don't upgrade the defense, it won't matter who we bring in.
if groh is hired it will be like the two old guys up in the box on the old muppets show. henning and groh = extreme senility uggh
The thing is I actually really like Florio. The only drama I really enjoy in life is NFL drama, and I buy him hook line and sinker. After all he is just reporting things that other people write. He may be a rumor monger, but he's damn good at it. Now that the season for our fins is over I really gotta find my way over to the draft forum. Lotsa good stuff being put up in there. I go to learn from people like you, CK and Boom. I am just a draft pawn.
Just say no to old AND mediocre. Let's get some fresh new blood in here. Personally, I am sick and tired of this "Parcells tree"
Lot of really good posters in the draft forum - a lot that are a lot better than me. Con, adamprez, and alen1 all know their stuff very well.
What has Al Groh ever accomplished? Dan Henning won SB's, Groh left the Jets after 1 8-8 season and no one tried to hire him away from UVA...that is normally a solid clue.
Whoever we get I hope it is someone who has been an effective DC before and they are not taking a guess on the promotion of a LB coach. This is not the time for experiments.
I think I prefer Butler because his style of defense is more enjoyable to watch to me, but I'm not fooling myself into thinking the perceived defensive style, or Butler is going to be a better coach.
Who gives a rats *** what Groh did as a head coach? That's a terrible objection to have. The league is full of guys who are good coordinators and not particularly good head coaches.
Not that I'm a Pasqualoni fan, but none of these coaches would be able to do much this year. Fact is, we need upagrades at LBs, Safety, injury at NT while there were rookies at CB... Yea, I hope where better, but a new coach just isn't going to magically fix this D.
Those two where a couple of the only reasons I used to watch that show as a kid. Them, the Swedish Chef, and Beaker.
Depends, Pasqualoni's defense may have been so complicated it took veterans to run the thing, and they did not have tha athleticism to operate it even when they knew where they were supposed to be on the field. A simpler defense could allow younger, faster players to play.
Having Butler is very intriguing. His track record with LBs is very good and he's been around one of the best defensive coaches ever. And Pittsburgh thinks pretty highly of him as well since he's been tagged to take over for LeBeau. But what I really like is the fact that they haven't already handed the reigns over to Groh, and they're going to interview Butler. Too many times teams focus on one guy and have a contract signed before they walk out the door. There's time to do due diligence.
....including the man whom Butler learned from...who some have claimed is the greatest 3-4 defensive coordinator of all time...Dick LeBeau.
im confused..the op said something aout dan henning and groh but i thought this picture was taken when parcells and ron wolf come to watch us play that game in 07.heck i could be wrong but yea those guys were classic and i still use them for puns to this day.
I'm about moving forward with this team, I consider Tony one of the younger coaches in the league, and from a roster perspective we're obviously young. I'm all for bringing Groh in to be a linebackers coach, but I want more out of this 3-4 than what we saw last season. Sure, we applied pressure, but we didn't do so consistently, nor did we really vary our blitz packages. In Keith Butler we're getting one of the young up-and-coming guys in the league, a linebackers coach who has molded a whole host of Pittsburgh Steelers into Pro-Bowl caliber players. I like Groh, but I'm wanting us go cutting edge on defense. I'll take Butler. I know he's going to be inventive, considering the system he has cut his teeth in. Give me that guy any day of the week.
The problem I see with us getting Butler is...the Parcells tree dont have many branches. I have a hunch it will be Groh.
I do give a rats *** about what Groh has done as a DC in the NFL prior though...and it isn't exactly impressive.
You know Im torn I respect the knowledge from the OLDER Gents, however the League has changed, evolved, and alot of these old timers are resistant to changing with the times. Sometimes it's good to bring in young fresh, motivated and open minded coaches..
