henne is fine for a first year performance. Still he has several things to improve upon. 1) accuracy - he doesnt need pinpoint accuracy like peyton manning or pennington but he has to improve on his "just get it in the general vicinity" throws. we are leaving hundreds of yards YAC on the field this year because he cant hit receivers in stride and they have to slow up or stop or drop to the ground to catch his errant completions. This is the most important thing for him to improve and he only needs to improve it slightly not a whole lot. If he cant improve his accuracy we will have to go with a complete receiver crew of trees because it will make more sense having the basketball jump types than guys who can run after the catch if he cant throw it in a place where they can run 2) manipulation of the secondary. right now he's done a pretty good job of recognition andd it will only improve with more game experience but I would like to see him move into baiting the secondary with his eyes and shoulders next year. Create some space for your receivers and you'lll add hundreds of yards to your totals 3) pocket awareness - i actually think he's serviceable right now but he could certainlky improve upon it 4) learn how to move with better purpose. when moving in the pocket or out, move with purpose. when in the pocket move to buy time when out of pocket move to create enough time to go for big play. Dont settle for ten yard pass when you break outside the pocket but try to find someone twenty yards downfield
I'd like to know something from the OP before even trying answer this. What in your opinion is a franchise QB? And at what point in a QB's career do you know he is one? Are Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Ben Roth, Drew Brees, Tom Brady franchise QB's. If so, why? Once you define your parameters, Ill tell you if Chad Henne is a franchise QB. Posted via Mobile Device
IMO He's easily in the bottom fourth of the league in pocket presence. He doesn't seem to have any feel for the rush a good 80% of the time. Luckily for him, his line has protected well enough for him to drop back and hit his throws in rythme.
you guys are in good shape with henne he's going to be so much better with a full training camp as the #1 , under his belt in my opinion
journeyman, backup or franchise potential that is the answer we will have @ the end of the season the guy just hasn't demonstrated great potential as of yet however, the jury is still out on this one & will remain out until the last game is played should take a look @ Thigpen somewhere down the road. how about a little more competition, draft Tebow? competition is the elixir of success
I've got to respectfully disagree with you on the part I bolded. I'll admit he's had his bad moments this season, but I do think he's shown some great potential. He's already got a few strong fourth quarter comebacks that were mostly put onto his shoulders to organize (2 I believe, can't recall atm). He's running a pretty average turnover rate, with the exception of last game. But if you recall even Pennington can have a bad INT game, remember the Ravens last year? Pennington also had 2 ints in 2.75 games, Henne has 7 ints in 7 games (Almost half of which from one bad game with tips, and a bad throw that he got hit throwing on). That being said, I completely agree with adamprez2003's assessment above. However, I think it's very improper to say he hasn't shown great potential. There's been moments of greatness, and moments of just plain suckitude. Take it all together and he's been somewhere between average, and good in my opinion. But to say he doesn't have the potential to be great I think is incorrect.
I really hope your kidding, you cant actually be serious Henne has shown great potential. he has made improvements that have been seen, like not holding the ball & throwing it away. he had a bad quarter. even proven elite qbs do. so this unrealistic, baseless expectation that Henne be perfect or he has no potential is assinine.
Where do you get the idea that after this season we will know if Henne is the answer? How was Brees his first couple seasons? What about Manning? I could go on, but I won't. Point is, one season, good or bad, doesn't tell the story about a player. Posted via Mobile Device
he pobably is but he's serviceable. there are much worse out there. he may take the sack unexpectedly but to his credit he secures the ball and disaster doesnt happen. i think his pocket presence willl improve with experience. Right now he has no feel for where the pressure is likely to come from. Once he gets a better sense of blitzes and opposing teams personnell he should improve.....hopefully
spot on analysis imo.. Just to add a few things.. 1} He's got a couple of hitches in his swing... one being an elongated delivery, this hitch puts him in precarious situations when combined with his lack of feel for backside pressure....The combination was front and center during his first pass against buffalo... 2}The other hitch i see, is his arm slot, he sinks his front hip, which lowers his release point, which results in batted balls, he's only 6'2, he cannot afford to be throwing flat footed.. 3} Somethin happens that i like very much when henne gets on the move, he immediately looks comfortable to me, and throws very accurate when on the run...I'd really like for him to explore his game, and work on his movement within the pocket..step up with purpose!! like the Prez talks about, and fire the gun baby...step up, and fire...Thats a pure talent throw, and he has it in spades to be awesome at it. I dont even think he knows how how dangerous he could become.. 4} he must anticapate the rush better, but i will take that over being a scatter brain with happy feet.. 5} We've recently seen publicity on the importance of the pump fake...ive always known it to be a very important element in a qb's game, not just for what it can do from a schematic standpoint, but it lets me know my QB is comfortable and confident on the field...We have yet to see Henne use his head and shoulders in this facet, so it lends me to believe the game has yet to slow down for him..when we do see it, then we will know he's there, and can play ball with that rocket arm.. I also think that his accuracy has been pretty good...If our receivers have made the catches they should have, he'd be over 60 percent.
i dont see journeyman or backup in his future at all. i think at worst he's a solid if unspecatcular starter with a strong arm and lead foot. Somewhere in the 15th overall ranking. However he's flashed the potential that makes one believe reasonably that he could crack top 7 if everything works out and he improves a few areas. If he did that he would be elite. So to me he will either become a solid starter or a elite starter. So there's reason to be happy but he still needs to improve
good I agree w/ everybody & their opinion on Henne, in every direction... got a game coming up & another opportunity for him to grow into the Franchise QB we need I don't expect miracles, just consistent improvement & indications now & then that he will/could be the man got the rest of the year to get it together it is my expectation that he will do so if he bombs this year, the TriFecta will dump him quicker than you can say: Beck we need a Franchise QB to compete @ the highest levels in the NFL, not an OK-QB or a Journeyman-QB show me a SuperBowl in the last five years that didn't sport a Franchise QB on either team. they're are none. developing Chad Henne into a first class (Franchise QB) is the most important thing left to do in 2009, if we are to contend in 2010
good stuff. agree with you on the movement. he's been surprisingly effective at it and I too sense he doesnt quite understand how dangerous that ability is. The hitch in his throwing motion I dont know if theyre going to be able to get rid of
apparently, I'm one of the few that think Henne hasn't lived up to his billing for me, the thread has come to an end no use antagonizing people over a personal opinion I wish Henne the very best, he is our best hope to move forward in 2010 it is what it is & there will be an answer by the end of the season
Again, why do you think the answer will be at the end of the season? How did Brees, Manning, and others look at the end of their first year? How have they turned out? You don't judge any player based on one year, and I don't expect our FO to do that. Posted via Mobile Device
I see where your coming from23rd...theres some chinks in the armour..i myself would like to take the rest of the season before i crown him as the franchise..Ive heard some comparisons that he's as good as flacco or ryan...i dont agree with those sentiments especially Flacco...not yet.
He said either, not neither. Peyton was on the other side. Here are some numbers though regarding "franchise QBs" and why passing games are now more important still, or as important, as running games. Obviously both would be better. And it's not the end all be all, but ... http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/teams/mia;_ylt=Agaay09.zkN4PYa7PMoldAdDubYF
I would guess there is some adjustment from Penny's throws coming in like marshmallows and Henne's coming in like a heat seeking missile.
the only value CP was to Henne was his experience and film study ... NOT the way he played the game ... why, because, that is NOT the way Henne will play. they are 2 different types of QBs ... so while watching CP has some benefits, some are grossly over exaggerating the benefit. add to that that he is a rookie as far as playing time, is being limited in what he asked to do and not to mention the derth of playmaking WRs ... Henne is and will be our guy .... i believe he will be better than Flacco and Ryan when its all said and done.
Actually Henne has played like Pennington Jr. Safe throws only taking that chance when he absolutely has to, and underthrowing streak patterns to boot.
It's simple, Henne needs to step up and start making plays, meaning, crucial plays, we we have to have them. d-1
