Dolfan... i respect your intensions.. Imo, nobody that i have heard has said any such thing, all that i have heard is that we would'nt root for the 72 team if it meant jeopordizing our present and future when it comes to playoff position and everything that pertains to that and in any other way that could directly or indirectly affect present and future. I would bet we all, once everything is not in question, will take over the kind of spirit for which you speak of.
The way I look at the 72 Dolphins is that it's the only thing that the Dolphins have done in the last 25 years that I can be truly proud of. Being 25, I haven't seen the Dolphins in any SuperBowls, much less win them. As a fan, that's all I've got to look at and say "Man, my team kicks ***." So if that goes, I will be pretty dissapointed, sad, disheartened... pick your word, they'll all fit. It's not about bragging rights, its about having something that your team has done, that no one else has done. For teams that have won recent superbowls you can look at that and say "That year" we were the team. For those that look at the 72 Dolphins, they can be proud of the fact that they were the team of "all time." No one has achieved what they have, and THAT friends, is what give a lot of us pride and hope as fans given all the super bowl-less years we've had since 85
I haven't really though about it, but another way of looking at it is when we did it, the rules didn't baby the Wr's and QB's, you could be manhandled. Today's game opens up the offense so much more. Also, teams were not as watered down as they are now with expansion and such.
Well, of course. I only meant the ones who rag us about it and say we live in the past. ALL Dolphin fans should be proud of our records, our players and our franchise. I always want a W, but nothing could make me not love this team.
In response to the OP, I would be disheartened if the '72 Miami Dolphins' record was broken, but if it should happen, at least the team's name isn't the New England Patriots or New York Jets. That would probably be the devastating factor for me. I fear not, though, because both of these teams can and will be beaten.
I'm not so sure bro. I've seen a lot of venom from Phin fans towards that 72 team and talk about how they don't give a rats arse about history. Absolutely kills me to see that type of attitude and makes zero sense to me. I still think people get caught up in having to choose between cherishing past accomplishments and future success of the team. I don't know why some people feel you can't root for current success for the team while also realizing what a proud past the franchise has. You don't have to choose and celebrating the teams succesful past has nothing to do with whether you want to team to win in the future. On another note, for the record I don't want the undefeated season bested by another franchise but I'm really beginning to think this is the year. 2 very hot and talented teams still undefeated this deep in the season with one, the N.O. Saints that just absolutely trashed what is still a good Patriots squad the other night. Weak remaining schedules to boot. I see it going down this year. As one poster put it though, at least it won't be N.E. or the Jets.
There's a great video called, "Days of Victory, Years of Glory". The 25th ann. of the Miami Dolphins. Everybody should watch that tape
Maybe our team has the curse of perfection. If the 72 Phins record gets broke our team will be able to win again. I really do respect what they did in the past, but really I'm just so sick and tired of having to talk about the past when I'm trying to talk up my team. Not that the perfect record has anything to do with that really, but just reading your post I really agree that we need something new to be proud of.
But we won in '73 following the perfect season of '72...and '73 was a darn good one in its own right. For our Modern Day Dolphins to return to SB Champions; it comes down to talent and execution, not curses!!!! We have been back to the SB since '73 (twice '82 & '84)....we just need to execute to turn ourselves back into SB champions!!!
The 17th game of that season was on my 7th birthday. Sad to say that was the best birthday EVER, but just cuz I've had so many more. If anyone breaks the record it should be the Colts and Manning. Class act all around, except for that whole sneaking out of town in the middle of the night thing. In fact, **** them too. If Brees gets it I will be bummed, but only cuz he should have done it for our team, why we passed on him so many times I'll NEVER understand. But I couldn't cheer for the patsies Monday night so I see that point of view also. But til it happens, we are still the ONLY perfect team in professional sports so neener neener neeener to all you LOOOOOSERS
