Develop who? Charlie Anderson, Quentin Moses, Cameron Wake has to play with his hand on the ground. There is no one to develop.
This is interesting: Ahmed Carrol? Wasn't he a sort of S/Kr? And I wonder who the other 6 players were?
I've said it for years: Matt Roth is an unspectacular football player. There really isn't "more to the story" than the fact that the guy doesn't perform on the field. My theory has been confirmed by Parcells/Ireland/Sparano. The only thing memorable about Roth has been his cool tattoos. Good riddance Matt. Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.
Dolphins cut LB Roth, safety Ness; sign CB Oglesby, DE Alama-Francis Nov. 24, 2009 CBSSports.com wire reports DAVIE, Fla. -- Linebacker Matt Roth was released Tuesday by the Miami Dolphins, a move that came a week after coach Tony Sparano lauded his work off the bench The Dolphins also signed cornerback Evan Oglesby and defensive end Ikaika Alama-Francis. Defensive tackle Jason Ferguson was placed on injured reserve with a season-ending leg injury, and safety Nate Ness was released. Ferguson was injured in last week's win over Carolina. Roth, a second-round draft pick in 2005, missed training camp with a groin injury was placed on the team's on the reserve-non football injury list. He was activated from the list on Oct. 31 and has compiled four tackles in Miami's last four games. Still, Sparano said Roth was "really impressive" in a 25-23 win over Tampa Bay on Nov. 15. Roth, 27, had his best season last year, when he moved from end to linebacker and started 14 games. He since lost his starting role to Jason Taylor. The emergence of Cameron Wake might have made Roth expendable. Wake has 4.5 sacks in eight games this season. Oglesby has spent time with Baltimore and Dallas. Alama-Francis was a second-round pick by Detroit in 2007. Miami players had the day off Tuesday. The Dolphins (5-5) face the Buffalo Bills (3-7) on Sunday." I think we can use the help in the secondary, so the CB signing is good. Just think about it we have gotten by with out him this season not the prettiest of season but we have managed. If he was going to be traded away next season better to not get caught up with someone we where going to let go anyway. I think we will be able to tell if this makes sense in the coming weeks. The FO knows what they are doing...
Bellicheat is just arrogant enough to sign him and only play him against us where he will have monster games. And we will all be shaking our fists at the sky screaming... "WHY GOD....WHHYYYYYY"!!!!!
I think now that he's out of Miami we have a better chance of hearing something.... And I'd be absolutely astonished if the Patriots don't have him signed by the time we eat turkey.
Head scratcher... I hope he doesn't go elsewhere and come back to bite us. He's not that good now, but he still has A TON of potential. He helped a lot last year. Does anyone know what that whole injury business was about yet?
I don't know about that. Reggie Bush was drafted 05-06ish. I also don't understand why teams would waive players rather than just cut them. We're gonna give away a player and foot the bill too now. Just weird. It's gonna suck if he goes to NE with us paying for it.
Got it and agree. This regime didn't draft him and he is not a BP/JI guy apparently. Roth's contract was up at the end of this season anyway. We can now concentrate on bringing guys here that are a better fit for the mold.
my guess this fall was drugs .... it's still the only explanation i can come up with ... i wanted an upgrade to Roth last off season, and was unhappy that we didn't go that route, outside of JT and taking a flier on Wake. Luckily, both have put in pretty good seasons to date. i did believe that a healthy Roth was important to the success of our run defense for the rest of the season. i guess the FO has a different belief ...
I by no means condone the move, with the current information released, I'm just trying to find the silver lining here. We will miss Roth in the run game. There is something happening behind the scenes that we don't know.
The only silver lining to me is we won't have to worry about his contract/paying him if he isn't going to fit in the long run. The timing is bizarre.
Agreed, I mentioned hes a FA next year in my OP. If we have no point in dealing with him next year, and hes gonna sit the pine due to some off field issue, we may as well open up a roster spot.
These couches mean business. Interesting moves in mid season. They are looking to improve day and night. Thought Roth was healthy and young its a surprise to me to.
What would have been the injury settlement situation if he had been released before he was fully recovered? I wont critisize the move because there must have been some underlying cause for it even if I don't understand. Maybe they felt Roth just didn't fit the mold for what they were looking for at the position and considered him one dimisional and not versatile enough. I liked Roth and thought he had a high motor and he was good against the run. I just hope he doesn't go somewhere else and become something more than what he was here.
I'm 99.9% sure it won't happen in 2009, but perhaps it's setting the wheels in motion for Phillip Merling to move to SOLB. I've seen several members mention it throughout the time since he's been drafted. Signing Alama-Francis adds another DE to the rotation (perhaps for more 4-3 fronts for the remainder of this year) but I wouldn't be shocked if Merling eventually made the move in 2010.
Exactly! I don't get why so many fans are so upset. Not like our run defense dropped considerably from '08 to '09 without Roth. And we're playing teams that can actually run the ball this year. I think the Jets were the only team we beat last year that could run the ball during our 9 of 10 streak And it's also not like our run D stepped up when Roth came back this year. From what I saw, our run D looked very suspect against Carolina, where Roth played. I keep hearing people praise Roth's run stopping abilities and consistently overuse the whole "set the edge" argument. I see Jason Taylor "set the edge" just as good as Matt Roth ever has.
Wow, I'm as shocked as anyone at the news. There has to be much more to the story than simply "he wasn't contributing". My hope is that it eventualy comes into the light so that we the fans can learn for the "real story".
Thank you. You summed it up nicely. People around here have an odd fascination with Matt Roth. HE WAS CUT BECAUSE HE'S NO GOOD. There is no "behind-the-scenes" conspiracy. He couldn't get it done. Period.
Add him to the list of Saban defensive players who didn't pan out. Travis Daniels, Jason Allen, Matt Roth. Good thing Crowder panned out.
Eh, I don't think he played any better than Jason Taylor has played this year. And nothing against JT, but I'd say JT has been just slightly above average this year. And having to overpay an at best slightly above average, slow SOLB was not in the cards this offseason. Especially after that 3 month injury or whatever it was. I think very well is an overstatement. Remember this....it wasn't until the rest of the defense was improved that Roth started to "play good." By improved I mean the additions of Ferguson, Starks, Langford, Bell returning from injury, etc.
That's debatable. Yes, he's good at setting the edge. But that's about it. His tattoos look cool. I'll grant you that. Posted via Mobile Device
The odd fascination is well warranted, IMO. Not saying it's a big deal but the whole situation got goofy for awhile and turned into this big mystery. Now he went from a guy we hoped would help the defense with his return, to cut with 6 games to play. And it's not a conspiracy to say they've always looked like they were hiding something. The media owes us for making us suffer thru dozens of Matt Roth articles. Sewing this up for us is the least they could do. The public demands answers to the ball cap capers..
Argue against their methodology but you're not convincing anyone they skewed their grading in favor of the superstar matt roth, but #3 rating of all 3-4 OLBs isn't bad. http://profootballfocus.com/by_posi...e=r&runpass=&teamid=-1&numsnaps=25&numgames=1 Very good against the run, average in coverage, half decent in pass rushing (5 sacks, 18 pressures). Superstar? No. Spectacular? No. But we don't have the luxury of having 53 superstar players.
This is a move I'm definitely not a fan of... That being said I would speculate that he was either aiming for a contract extension, as some claimed (which really wouldn't make any sense) or he was injured and wasn't showing enough after his return. Given the injuries I guess they felt like they needed to drop any expendable roster spots. With JT looking good and Wake coming on and Charlie Anderson actually showing up a bit I guess they wanted the spot. This would seem to also show that JT will likely be back next year and he should...
I remember you posting a great article on this exact subject a couple months back on that other message board. Maybe it's time to resurrect it here? I remembered thinking the same thing when Merling was initially drafted, seeing that we had no SAM at that point. Roth stepped in and was a great stopgap to the roll. Once Roth started having "issues" during TC, I kind of thought the same situation was going to come to fruition. The major problem is that Merling is now listed on many sites (ESPN, CBS,Dolphins) as 295lbs. This is most likely a small exaggeration, but it well over his combine weight of 276lbs. Just top of my head (to lazy to research correct me if I'm wrong) I think most SAMs are hovering around the 265 range. A full 30lbs difference from his current weight. While even his combine weight was a bit high for a SAM. But, I also remember Merling coming to the combine out of a shape due to a Hernia surgery which is why he fell to the top of the 2nd round (again correct me if I'm wrong.) Some of that is probably muscle due to our intense strength training program, to me it looks like Merling may have settled into the mold (although possibly a bit on the small side) of a 3-4 DE.
I agree. He was a decent player. But it's not really that hard to see why he was waived. Had we not had the injuries to W. Allen and Jason Ferguson, there's no way he's cut (during this season at least). But since those guys got injured, we needed to add depth to those positions, NT and CB, and to do this we needed to cut a guy that we were going to cut come the offseason anyway. No matter how you try to slice it, Roth was getting cut in the offseason. Rosenhaus is gonna demand that he be paid more than he's actually worth and Miami doesn't need to and won't overpay for a NICE player
